New Game- random leader:Roosevelt

What got me really started learning this game: switching thru my cities every turn.
Really every turn ;) Before you end turns, cycle thru.
Civ = cities, so if you are not looking inside them you are not playing.

The age spectrum of this game amazes me. You got guys like RobFIN, who is like in diapers and then you got OlFart, who is...well...an Ole Fart . I'm not sure there is an triple A title that approaches this spectrum. Really a great thing.

HAHAHAHA  !! That diaper joke was good! Hehe, anyways that is wonderful thing in this game and this community. You see so different kinda people who still has the same 'hobby'! It sometimes makes me thinking, why am I here talking with people who are often multiple times older than me, what makes me interested of this stuff. All other people in my age are playing just CoD and BF in XBox or PS3 without learning anything of computers. Well, I'm sure that I learnt it from my father, he used to play strategy games when I WAS in diapers. Okay, I know why I like these games but how did it affect to me and my interests and skills. Here is some of them; In school, I like IT, maths, history, geography and english, they're also my strongest subjects. I don't like subjects as biology, other languages. That's all Civ related !! Weird isn't it? I've been thinking of programming as career, and I got interested when I played with Civ's XMLs and did NC edits and all other things. Sure I have also other hobbys besides civ (like sports and guitar) but its still kinda weird if one game has determined my career. Sure this all can be a coincidence but its still something. Me as one of the youngest and Ol'fart as one of the oldest I'd say that here is people aged between about 15-70 years. Anyways, I want that we make the thread of game concepts, Lymond! I feel like I've missed something!

Joe, I'm really at a loss here. Is there something you are not telling us? Do you play too fast? Do you not look at your cities each turn?

We have mentioned over and over to whip or chop that monument in Ummagumma and yet you continue to flat out not do it. This is a very basic and simple thing to do. It not even a concept.

You've let Ulundi grow into unhappiness. Why? Look at your cities. Take note of when they approach the happy cap and get a unit in there before it does. Don't just sit there and look at your cites be unhappy. Get MP in there and hook up things like Gold and you increase your happy cap. Otherwise, whip unhappiness away with a 2pop or 3 pop whip.

I feel like we can't progress until you get these very very very simple things down. I mean, we went over all these things about 3 years ago. I just don't understand.

edit: And being 59 is not an excuse. 59 is the new 29

Yes, one of my problems is that I play fast. The other problem is that there are so many suggestions being made that I mix them up sometimes. For instance, you said to forget about pyramids but someone else just said that I should build them. The fault is entirely mine, though.

Anyway, with my obvious failings, is it even worth it to continue this game here?

Hmm.. Maybe you should make a thread where you play a game with lymond, only lymond. You won't get confused and he is willing to help, I suppose :)! Just idea.

Send a unit into that fog to the east. We can only see the corn and there might be a nice city site or two in that direction. Then again you'll probably settle that last after you block off Kublai.

I can see your point joe. Too much advice can be confusing. Maybe concentrate taking advice from only a couple of people. Maybe the ones who seem to make most clear sense to you.

Whether to carry with this game? I guess it's down to are you enjoying it?

Let lymond be your guide. Maybe if anyone else wants to comment they could address their posts to lymond

so he can pass on advice without overloading you.

Joe, you could try posting shorter sets. Start with a pre play plan (PPP) before playing a set detailing research, worker moves, which tiles you'll be working, exploration etc. Lymond can then comment on it. If you get bored waiting then play another game, practice your golf swing (;)) or even talk to a real life person.

This game should be fine for learning purposes, no need to start another.

^^I think that's an excellent idea, provided Lymond agrees. I'd definitely advise to play shorter sets as well. Clearly you got too many people telling you contradicting stuff. The rest of advice better stays spoilered :)

I played a few more turns, but I'm not sure if I should post them.

BTW- I never played golf in my life. :)

Joe, start over and play slow. After worker pops, begin to analyze your city(ies) each turn, managing the tiles worked.

I think you have the initial improvements down (Pigs>Cows>Rice). So get those up and then chop a forest if BW is in or build a mine. Build Settler immediately at Size 3 (warriors after first worker, ofc). Settler will get a chop. Chop another forest for second worker.

So play until Settler pops and stop for report, at which point you will play very short turnsets.

Techs: AH>Mining>BW>TW>POT

Please let us know what techs you might get for free from ridicuhuts

(I've almost been inclined to get you to start a new games without huts/events, as you should, but this is a decent start)

Spoiler :
HAHAHA :rotfl:!! Ridicuhuts, what a nickname! Why are you still using 'em Joe? I quited using them some time ago. They'll give you too much ridicuboost to early game. How to remove: 1. Open save file in BtS. 2. Zoom down and open World Buider. Save result. 2. Close the game. Open your result in word editor. 3. Press Ctrl-F and type in PlayableCiv=1. Change all those lines to PlayableCiv=0 except the first of those lines. Try not to focus other lines or you are gonna see revealed info. 4. Ctrl-F and type in ImprovementTile=IMPROVEMENT_GOODY_HUTS and delete all those lines. 5. Save, open the result in BtS and enjoy your ridicihutless saved game.

Isn't the whole point of this exercise to give my early game a boost without ridicuhuts? ;)

Fixed that for ya. And you shouldn't read my spoilers until lymond has checked it. Don't know if I should spoiler this one too..

I still don't have the slightest idea of what I'm doing or why. I'm just following what someone is telling me to do.

I think the instruction you've gotten is good but civ is a game. it should be played.

If your goal is to become an Immortal level player you can improve while still enjoying the game. The best way to do this I believe is to simplify the settings to make it easier to get a feel for the fundamentals:

  • 1. Start on the lowest level you haven't beaten the game on yet (Prince?)
  • 2. Pangaea map, Small size (only 4 AI players will simplify diplomacy and lack of water will simplify war).
  • 3. Allow only Domination and Conquest as VCs. This will force you to War with the AI. War is the most powerful tool in the game even in games where you allow Space and Diplomacy victory conditions.
  • 4. No huts, no random events. These skew the game to make any kind of early planning almost impossible.
  • *5. No barbs. A distraction for now. Enable barbarians only after learning how to manage an early empire efficiently.

Popped the settler. City size 3, researching TW. No techs from huts.

Looking good. Minor point: you want a warrior stationed to your west earlier to deal with animals.

Pump out 2 more warriors after Ikhanda, let capital grow to size 5, and then whip/build/chop out another settler.

Spoiler :

You didn't say to research MYST so I'm doing so after POT. Going to build graneries in my cities.

It took a while to get to size 5, but I got my 3rd settler. I'm going to settle 1S of lake to the NW.
