Happy reading

Looks like civrules going to be at it again.

UU are in!

This was good piece of info
Another new aspect of culture is that it helps raise the defensive value of a city. Where the previous game offered bonuses based solely on population the new game will reward smaller cities that have citizens with a stronger cultural identity. This new mechanic has the added complication of making it much, much harder to defend conquered cities. Since the culture resets once you take a new city, you'll have to increase culture and build up the goodwill of the inhabitants before you can start to feel safe.

Ah good, then my Great Britain mod can have Highlander Infantry as UU for the British :smug:

Now the pain starts. I've read the previews, seen the movies, waded through the screenshots, re-vamped 'Pirates' to view the graphics engine, and checked out the CivAnon.org to balance my mental health. All to no avail -- I must have the game and I'm enduring the pain of waiting.

Yeah, sure, a whole bunch of you will complain about this and that, but I know that I will enjoy it and it will become my most used and best value game -- as have all the other Civ games and SMAC/X.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of the late-game screens and also seeing more that cover naval combat and other parts of the user interface. Roll-on November!

:goodjob:

I think it's not good enough to just update Civ3 with a 3D graphics engine and call it a whole new game. It's good to see that this is not what appears to be happening with Civ4.

From the flood of information over the past two days it seems that the developers are bringing some interesting changes into Civ4 which will mean a whole new experience for all of us fans.

I particularly like the "balance" that the developers appear to be trying to build in the new game. Civ1 had a wonderful balance between the diplomatic, cultural, military, science and economic aspects of gameplay. Civ2 had a wonderful military game engine and Civ3 brought in great enhancements like culture and modability.

I hope the new game goes back to that magic balance of Civ1 that started this all in the first place.

Cheers

I really like the way the Civ Editor looks like it is going to run. It looks like you can make a minor edit without a headache or you can totally redo the game if you chose.

Oh great, cultural defense bonuses, thats the conquerors worst nightmare.

Yeah, can you say 'The US in Iraq or Vietnam'? ;) Of course, if this is the case, then it is all the more reason to allow nations to LIBERATE cities back to a friend/ally-because otherwise capturing cities from a mutual enemy will become HORRIFIC!!!!

In the comment regarding Serfdom, they mention that "mines are much easier to make." Though I agree with this rationale, I would also like to see them apply it to farms as well-given that, historically, this is where serfdom was of the greatest benefit to the economy-in the cheap production of food for the nation.
Also on the topic of labour-in civics-it would be good if there were upsides and downsides to the different labour choices. For instance, having slavery means cheap labour and rushing of improvements/wonders, but should come at the cost of high unemployment and possible slave revolts. With serfdom, it should give you cheap and easy mines and farms, but should only be useful in very high population civs, and should also cause increasing unhappiness amongst your more agricultural cities (like Emancipation, perhaps serfdom becomes difficult to maintain AFTER another country has abandoned it themselves).
Anyway, just some thoughts-but overall, civics sounds like a cool addition :)!

By adding cultural defense bonus, it sounds like they've heard some of the complaints that Civ is geared too much for the warmongers.

Until now it all seems perfect. I hope they dont include nothing related to Real time playing in the core.

Glad to see the SMAC civics system in there. I always loved that. With religon in the pot as well, there are going to be some mighty interesting combinations.

Islamic France with Slavery, Socialist, Free Market & Police State.

This is gonna rock!
