Background: After Manzikert, the Byzantines entered into a new age of prosperity that continues to this day. Despite minor losses in the Crusades and the occainsonal revolt in the Balkans, the Empire is doing very well. In the early 1800s, the Imperial Army invaded Egypt to oust Napoleon and has since occupied and used the country as a base to explore and colonize the Indian Ocean. It's major conflicts today lay with the Kingdom of Jerusalem which an increasingly large faction within the Imperial Senate wish to see absorbed back into the Empire, The Timurid Empire with whom it compete for influence in Ukraine and the Caucauses, and the Polish-Hungarian Commonwealth with whom it competes for influence with in the Balkans. It has lately been looking to Germany and and Japan as good strong allies to help them enclose their enemies.

This was achieved at the Union of Lublin in 1465 with a well placed royal marriage. The result was the creation of a military and political colossus in Central Europe. Background: As The Polish-Hungarian Commonwealth, France and Sweden grew in power, the Germans began to see that they must either unite or risk being absorbed. In 1815, with Prussian leadership, the German Union was born as a loose confederation amongst almost all the various German kingdoms and duchies. Though technically each part of the German Union gets an equal say, lately Prussia has been asserting itself more as a first amongst equals.

Background: The Archduchy of Austria, seat of many past Holy Roman Emperors, was at a time seen as the most likely state to suceed in uniting Germany, however the growth of Prussia left the Austrians isolated. Background: Though not as rich as it once was, The Venetian Republic still manages to maintain one of the world's best trade fleets and navys. It might possibly have the strength to unite Italy under one flag, but many in the goverment are against this and see it as too expensive. Though Venice competes with the other Italians, Austrians and Byzantines, it's greatest threat might lie with it's own people, who have heard the liberal ideas of the Northern Italian Republic and are becoming dissatisfied with the financial gap between the wealthy and the poor.

Background: Great Britiain's large industrial base and colonial empire make it world power to beat. The loss of some of it's American colonies might have set it back, but did not deter the nation from expanding elsewhere. While it is currently is in the process of colonizing India, it also is meeting stiff opposition from the Marathas. Besides India, The Empire also has growing interests in South Africa, Indochina, and the Pacific. Its main rivals for supremacy are France, and it's former ally in the Napoleonic Wars, the Byzantine Empire.

Background: The loss of most of Spain's American colonies, corruption in the goverment and the decline of her navy have hit Spain hard. Still with all of Africa open for colonization and the increasing rivalries between her more powerful neighbors, a resurgence in power is not impossible at all. Still however, Spain must worry about revolution in her colonies and keeping her Bourbon cousins in Naples and Lousiana in power.

The Timurid Empire

Background: Though still a world power, the name of the Timurids no longer strikes fear into the hearts of men the way it once did. The Empire's Russian possesions are in serious danger of major rebellion due to the irrendentist policies of Novgorod and Byzantium, and Japan and China are only too happy to chip away at the Siberian provinces. Other major problems within the empire include the military's unwilling to move away from cavalry based warefare, and general incompetance in the matter of navies.

Background: Sweden's strong economy, political stability and fine army and navy to back it up make it Northern Europe's greatest power. Their is some dissent amongst the Finns, Lapps, and Russians in Ingria, but nonetheless the nation is doing very well. However, if Novogorod is allowed to gain too much power they could potentially cause some problems, and of course their is also the old rivalry with Denmark. Only time will tell if Sweden can move from the position of great power to world power.

The Kingdom of Denmark-Norway

Private Enterprise: 3
Army: 8 Divisions, 5 Cavalry Divisions
Army Quality: 5
Navy: 6 Battleships, 9 Squadrons
Navy Quality: 7
Background: Denmark-Norway is a firm moderate power in Europe. It has a fair amount of wealth and a low population, allowing most of it's citizens to live quite well. However, despite Norway being in the name of the kingdom, some Norweigans feel as they are second citizens. Sweden's desire for greater wealth and Germany's desire for Shelswig-Holstein could cause some instability, but there are two things the kingdom has that her rivals don't, a long Atlantic coastline and unprecedented control of access to the Baltic Sea.

The Empire of Japan

Navy: 12 Battleships, 16 Squadrons
Navy Quality: 7
Background: Rapid flow of technology into Japan from the west via the Timurids lead to early industrialization for the Japanese as far as Asia goes. Recent Emperors have increased the spread of technology and encouraged western investment in the country, using their modernized armies to roll over Siberia and up through Alaska. Japan now has the most powerful navy in Asia, and one of the best in the world, though her army could still use some work. Japan now is poised to exert her influence all over Asia, and if circumstances are right, possibly extend her empire in the Americas as well. Still, the Timurids would like to get a hold of Siberia, and China and Korea are not ready
to be exploited without a fight.

Military Spending: 4
Public Spending: 1
Private Enterprise: 1
Army: 6 Divisions, 2 Cavalry Divisions
Army Quality: 5
Navy: 15 Squadrons
Navy Quality: 7
Background: If Oman can avoid being absorbed by a colonial power, its prospects are actually quite high. It has a large amount of room to expand, and Its trading ships and privateers are making hefty profit in the Indian Ocean. The Sultan however should be weary of his brother, the governor-prince of Zanzibar, who might seek independence for his island, or take all of Oman himself.

Army: 14 Divisions, 8 Cavalry Divisions
Army Quality: 8
Navy: None
Navy Quality: 2
Background: Despite a supportive population and decent economy, Novgorod's is not well. Though it hasn't been for nearly three hundred years. The Prince is in a constant squabble with the Boyars for power, and the Timurids and the Swedes are all to eager to encroach on her lands. Nonetheless, Novgorod helps out her Russian brothers to the south whenever there is a chance, and has strong ties with the Byzantines through their Orthodox religion.

Private Enterprise: 2
Army: 30 Divisions, 10 Cavalry Divisions
Army Quality: 4
Navy: 12 squadrons
Navy Quality: 2
Background: Despite earlier attempts, China did not take to western technology quite as well as Japan. Conflict between those wishing to modernize and those wishing to keep to traditional Chinese values threatens to tear the country apart, while lack of infrastructure and corruption in the government make the average peasant's life very difficult. China's only hope to keep from being dominated by foreign powers is to make use of it's massive population.

American Confederation (The Confederacy)
Capital: Richmond
Leader: President Robert E. Lee
Presidential Republic: Democratic Party (conservative)
Dissent: 10%
Global Opinion: Neutral
Base IC: 10
Military Spending: 4
Public Spending: 2
Private Enterprise: 4
Army: 12 Divisions, 8 Cavalry Divisions
Army Quality: 8
Navy: 2 battleships, 10 squadrons
Navy Quality: 5
Background: The American Confederation has not done as well as its northern counterpart, The American Union, which it split with upon independence. It was blocked from westward expansion by Mexico and the Kingdom of Louisiana and the upper-class's refusal to end slavery has caused some political backlash and criticism from other developed nations. The Confederacy still has a virtual monopoly on cotton and also produces large quantities of tobacco. While it is surrounded on all sides, it is not necessarily blocked from expansion. Especially in the Caribbean and Florida where rebellion is brewing against the Spanish.

American Confederation (The Union)
Capital: Philadelphia
Leader: President William Seward
Presidential Republic: Republican Party (liberal)
Dissent: 10%
Global Opinion: Neutral
Base IC: 12
Military Spending: 5
Public Spending: 3
Private Enterprise: 4
Army: 10 Divisions, 5 Cavalry Divisions
Army Quality: 6
Navy: 6 battleships, 14 squadrons
Navy Quality: 7
Background: The Union of American States is known for being one of the world's most democratic countries. It is also one of North America's most powerful. Since independence, it has expanded west, coming into conflict with not only Mexico, Louisiana and the American Confederation, but also the Native American population of the are. Many citizens of the nation are disgusted over slavery taking place so close to home, and are calling for boycotts or intervention against the confederacy, while continuation of westward expansion to the Pacific Ocean through Mexico, British Canada or California is also something many wish to see. The Union's vibrant economy, huge influx of of immigrants and large industrial base on the East Coast make it a potential powerhouse and foreign investment is also continuing to grow.

Kingdom of Louisiana
Capital: New Orleans
Leader: King Henri V
Authoritarian Monarchy: Conservative
Dissent: 15%
Global Opinion: Neutral
Base IC: 9
Military Spending: 4
Public Spending: 2
Private Enterprise: 3
Army: 14 Divisions, 6 Cavalry Divisions
Army Quality: 5
Navy: 1 battleship, 8 squadrons
Navy Quality: 6
Background: After the French Revolution, parts of the Bourbon royal family fled to America, setting themselves up a new Kingdom in at first Haiti, and later New Orleans when the city asked them back. Since then, the monarchy has received heavy support from Spain, keeping the Americans and Mexicans out, but as trouble grows for the Spanish in Europe, they might lose a vital ally in the region. Nonetheless, the Louisianans are proud and seek to expand their power in the region. Slavery still exists in the nation on sugar cane and pepper plantations, and the monarchy is reluctant to end the practice, as it would cut into their major exports.

Republic of Mexico
Capital: Mexico City
Leader: President Benito Juarez
Presidential Republic: Liberal
Dissent: 25%
Global Opinion: Neutral
Base IC: 10
Military Spending: 4
Public Spending: 4
Private Enterprise: 2
Army: 12 Divisions, 9 Cavalry Divisions
Army Quality: 5
Navy: 12 squadrons
Navy Quality: 3
Background: Mexico has had many problems in the past, but President Juarez promises a new day has come for the country. Corruption in the government, secessionist movements, and general poverty make things difficult for Mexico, but it's large territory, many resources and the people's new faith in democracy could change this. Mexico's main rivals in the area include Louisiana, California and the American Confederation, however it should not ride off Spain who still refuses to recognize the nation, or Columbia, who owns Panama and could possibly wish to extend its influence farther into Central America.

The Republic of California
Capital: San Francisco
Leader: President Samuel Brannan
Presidential Democracy: Conservative Party
Dissent: 14%
Global Opinion: Neutral
Base IC: 11
Military Spending: 3
Public Spending: 2
Private Enterprise: 6
Army: 8 Divisions, 4 Cavalry Divisions
Army Quality: 5
Navy: 4 battleship, 8 squadrons
Navy Quality: 7
Background: The Republic of California arose from an odd set of circumstances arriving from a secret meeting between several powerful Mormons, Mexican military officers, and Yankee and Japanese businessmen. This odd set of characters contributed fair amounts of wealth to found an army and declared their territories independent from the previous with the incentive to create a society that was socially liberal and economically laissez-fair. California is amongst the newest nations on Earth, and has thus far used it's considerable economic influence to essentially buy its independence from its former colonizers and gain recognition around the world. Still, The American Union is not happy about this clear block in it's path to the Pacific and many Mexicans and Japanese see the affair as treason. If California can fully tap into its gold mines, and increase trans-Pacific shipping, it could possibly become not to only a regional, but also a world power.

No. 1 would be interesting.

No. 2 is already being done by Lightfang and Dldnjstjr.

No. 3 is an intruding prospect. :)

But for me, I'd choose number one amongst them because its a tried and true formula for NES's. :p

But for me, I'd choose number one amongst them because its a tried and true formula for NES's. :p

Pretty sure that NES by Lightfang never made it off the ground.

Number one, the other two have at least been attempted before. Number three was just done by daftpanzer.

#2 is a hell to mod- my first failure was the hardest.

I have some good ideas to streamline it fairly effectivley I think. It doesn't look like its winning, but if it gets a few more votes in the poll I'll go into greater detail ;)

Just a large line of military defeats instead of the victories in the 1000s that culminated with Manzikert. A combination of Crusader, Byzantine, Mongol and Arab attacks eventually completely did them in.

The thing in Palestine is Israel or a Crusader Kingdom? and how did Byzantium conquer Egypt?

Nr 1 !!!!!!!!!!!

I voted for 3, but I would really like #1 as well.

#2 is getting off the ground. As soon as I finish the map. :p
