Week 16, 1915

Ottoman Empire:

All is quiet in the Ottoman Empire. Not even any Arab Rebels were killed this week. Everyone must be on vacation.

Austria-Hungary:

Italian DD Flotilla sunk by Austrian DD Flotilla near Ragusa. Survivors are desperately swimming for the shore and safety. Who will pick them up first?

After this ship was sunk we noticed there was an Italian coastal submarine in the same square. This too was sunk but no survivors.

On the Western Front the Austrians shelled British Trenches outside Metz, damaging a few units there. No other action taken.

Germany:

French DD Flotilla sunk by U-Boot near Scapa Flow. No survivors. U-Boot attempts to sink one of the British BBs near the southern coast of Norway but dies a horrible death at the hands of the Royal Navy. A similar attack was made on a Russian CA near the Memel area. That was a close fight but in the end the Russian captain knew what to do to defeat his enemy.

German patrols detect a Russian Spy near Tarnopol. Cavalry troopers were dispatched immediately who tracked the spy down and killed him.

Trieste - The great battle starts off with a roar as trench mortars shell the city which was also shelled by the Austrian Navy earlier. After the guns fall silent the infantry attacks. The first round pitted a German Rifle A against a French Rifle R. The German never made it through no mans land. It was decided to call off the attack for now.

Metz - German guns pound French positions this week outside of Metz. 5 units redlined with the others placed into the yellow. One Rifle R managed to stay in the green. Then the infantry attacks supported by 3 German Armies. The struggle is intense but not as colossal as the fighting on the Isonzo a few weeks ago. In the end the losses were as such:

Germany - 1 Rifle R

France - 2 Rifle A, 9 Rifle R, 2 Colonial Divisions

One French Rifle R was left out of mercy for the brutal fighting that took place there. During the fight, a lowly major performs so heroically that he along with his Elite Rifle A unit is promoted. The Rifle A unit gets a new name and the leader is rushed to Berlin where he is placed in the command of Army Group Nord.

Alas, Entante never gets leaders, neither in thus game, nor in the old one...

Nothing much of any interest happing in the Greatland this week. We did pick up some survivors in the cold waters of the Baltic. They were very happy to try some of our potato vodka. We were happy to indulge them, as it made them very talkative.

________________________________________________________

In Triest, a 155mm shells the 2 Army Groups accompanied by 28 supporting units, 2 CBs, and a 210mm. It failed. :( The second 155mm hit AG Hohenzollerin for 1 HP.

At Metz, 155mm hita Elite MG for 2HP, 155mm hits Elite R-Inf for 2 HP, 155mm hits R-Inf for 2 HP, 155mm hits MG for 2 HP, 155mm hits A-Inf for 3HP, 155mm hits R-Inf for 1HP, 155mm hits for 1HP, 155mm fails, 155mm hit Guard unit for 1HP, 155mm hits MG for 3HP, 155mm hits MG for 1HP, ditto, ditto, 155mm hits Elite MG for 2HP, 155mm hits R-Inf for 3HP, 155mm hits R-Inf for 2 HP, 155mm hits Elite R_inf for 1 HP. Then Joffre moves in, fully healed at 14/14, attacking the 2nd Guard Inf (5/8). He wins! But is taken down to 6/14. He falls back to recuperate. A V Amree comes in and shells a Reg 42nd A-Inf Div. for 2 HP. This is followed by a IV Armee that shells a Reg Testung Metz Guard (4.13.1) but fails. Le J of A steps up at 18/18 and focuses on the same Testung unit and kills it easily losing only 2HP. "She" then goes back for more and attacks a Reg R-Inf which she defeats, but takes on much more damage (7HP!). Too weak to fall back, the entire Corp stays on the hill with the remaining Cattle. A German Worker was captured during the battle and sent to the rear. Thus ends this week's "Battle at the Metz".

Britain

This is how things look like around Metz after british turn. Some 18 units are blocking the only road to Metz (not counting the one French stand on). Our guns destroyed a road that could be used to attack J of A Corps, so we hope our French comrades will be happy with us. We lost 1 A div which was 3/5 trying to kill the German L Div. Two L Div were eventually destroyed by A and R Divs and some gun support. Our Counterbattery fails to kill Austrian light gun.

Near Oslo our DD sinks something that lasted long enough to be a sub. The search for another sub near Scapa Flow was not that successful.

Italy

Diaz went into action this week, first removing German MG that went too far into Italy, and then killed another L Div in Isonzo. Our A Div was trying to kill another L div but failed. Finally one more A div was brought into action and Germans lost Isonzo valley. Italian troops took over that roadless trench there in anticipation that Germans will have too many targets to fight with next turn...

Week 17, 1915

Ottoman Empire:

6 Arab Rebels killed in Mesopotamia.

Austria-Hungary:

Seeing the bloodbath that is ensuing near Metz the Austrians retreat. One of the German commanders in the area comments on how the Austrians are like a bad toothache. One small disturbance sends them crying in pain. Does Germany have to carry all the weight of her allies? The German commander shakes his head and returns to his duties.

Russian Cossack in the Constanta area was chased by an Austrian Rifle A and a Rifle R. The Rifle A redlines the horse who flees but the Rifle R catches up to him and the horse dies.

Austrian Navy shells Trieste damaging the defenders there in preparation for the German attack to come.

Germany:

Mysterious explosion detected near Rotterdam by German CL. No survivors.

Metz - German artillery pounds the British positions blocking Metz and a few units are redlined while most of the others are brought to the yellow. On this week, the first week of May 1915 the Germans use tear gas for the first time. 1000 gas shells are fired by the artillery in a 30 minute bombardment. Unfortunately the prevailing winds in the area dissipates the barrage and there are no deaths caused by this terrifying new weapon. German troops are issued gas masks.

germansoldierdog.jpg

German soldier near the Metz front with gas mask.
Note that the attack dogs are also wearing gas masks.
The Germans used dogs on the Metz front to help clear minefields.

Then 4 Armies move in killing 8 British Rifle R while taking no losses. A German Rifle A kills a 9th British Rifle R. 5 workers are captured as prisoners.

Trieste - German trench artillery shell Trieste and a counter battery gun takes out a French 155mm gun. Another counter battery gun takes out an Italian Light Artillery nearby. Two armies attack Trieste killing either 1 French Rifle A and 1 French Rilfe R or 2 Rifle Rs. I can't remember what the second death was but the first one was indeed a Rifle R. Germany loses one Rifle A.

:whew::whew::whew:

So many things could go wrong this turn... 9 R Divs is just a small portion of the units that could die...

Hmmm.... Would you tell me what could have gone wrong without giving away anything, or maybe you could tell me in about 5 to 10 turns from now? I'm very curious now what my mistake was. ;)

It wouldn't be prudent at this juncture. ;)

Maybe towards the end of the war. Even though some fears were unjustified, lives still hang in the balance.

The Nicolas Gang destroys the RR NE of Varna. The Russians topside wave to their Austrian friends as they chug away to safety.

An AC takes out a road 2 tiles SW of Danzig. The railway has been littered with German Workers. The Russians chose the humane route.

Tired of the same old Russian manauvers, the Russian Army practices spilling over the border towards Konisberg.

In Trieste, a 155mm shells AG Rupprecht for 1HP. Intelligence reports that AG Hohenzollerin and Nord are resting, each only having 7HPs.

Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for being in attendance at the Metz tonight. We have a wonderful show lined up for you, so sit back and relax. We'll start the evening off with the booming orchestra of the 155mms, tonight accompanied by the Light Artillery. This will be followed by the upfront movements of our Corp personnel in a deadly enseble designed to blow the house away. And we'll finish with the steady beat of our foot soldiers in a constant yet abstract pounding that will surely leave you in awe.

I can give you a detailed Battle Report if you'd like, but basically the French destroyed 19 German units. And we're still ready to defend our cities.

gps to Tigranes.

Wow! 19 units in a fortress like Metz! Detailed report... hmm.. not the every hit point, but at least we eager to know what were French losses, pretty please?..

metzd.jpg

Picture, that tells the story!

[party].......................:high5:

3 weeks (3 days in real life) of planning and cooperation finally paid off! Astonished BEF only discovered 1 Car and five 1HP left defenders in Metz (plus Howitzer and 2 AAs). How many units did French loose to kill 19? :crazyeye: In any case their death was not in vain! On the picture you can see the captors of Metz:

Freyberg -- killed Armored Car and 1 HP left Machine Gunner
Regular A Divs -- killed Elite 1 HP Machine Gunner
2 R Divs -- killed 2 A Divs
Canadians arrived this turn from across the Ocean, Ireland, Scottland, England and went into battle -- killing 1 L Div
Indian Div (produced this turn, arrived from London) -- almost lost to 1 Def AA gun
Veteran wounded A Div -- killed second AA gun
Not shown: Canadian Div that killed Howitzer and entered Metz burning Observation Plane!

What a Victory! Thanks for your 155 mms France! We need to think how we trade Metz without Germans attacking it during their turn...

General Haking arrived from London and was given a task to defend Metz from possible counter attacks. If only French would destroy that road and rail on Cow last turn! Our guns would cut all the roads from Germany and Germans could not attack Metz except for Corps. But now tons of British units await German retaliation!

2 unknowns were sunk this turn: 1 by our DD in Baltic and 1 by our BC near Holland.

Road and Trench on Iron are destroyed near Beyrut by our BCs.

Italy

Italian guns knocked down 6 HPs from Ruprecht Corps attacking Trieste.
3 Counterbatteries destroyed 2 CBs and 1 220 mm gun!

Unreported Neutral activity detected in Serbia and Bosnia. Yeah! Even AI presses hard on Centrals!

Hey guys,

May I kindly ask for the detailed battle report for Metz during the French turn. How on earth did that city fall? I'm frankly dumbfounded.

Week 18

Ottoman Empire:

Arab Rebel killed in Mesopotamia. British BC shelled by Turkish LA near Beirut bringing him down to 2HP.

Then we noticed during our patrols there was a French Corbet BB in the Aegean. The Yavuz and it's support ships were sent in to deal with the situation. When they got there however we noticed a second French BB. The captain of the Yavuz gulped but given he had almost run out of movement points decided to press the attack despite his imminent death next turn. The CLs and CA with him shell the French BB then the Yavuz attacks winning this round. All of Turkey prepares for the worst but hopes for the best. This loss of the Yavuz would effectively and finally cripple the Turkish fleet. It was a good run while it lasted the captain thinks to himself.

Austria-Hungary:

The Austrian Navy continues it's shelling of Trieste but only scored 2 hits.

Germany:

Lots of activity this week as the Western and Isonzo fronts erupt in terrible violence. But first let's review the German naval actions.

Mysterious explosion detected near Rotterdam by patrolling German CL. The British Royal Princess BC was sunk near Hull by a German submarine. Apparently the British vessel was trying to get home for repairs.

A Russian CA was sunk near Kalmar generating survivors which were rescued. Near Gotenorg a British CL was attacked by a German DD Flotilla but the German ship goes down. He weakens the British ship however for a follow up attack by a German Dreadnought. No survivors.

Metz - Shocked by the amassing of French artillery the Germans decide they must retake the city anyhow. A trench artillery plus three 210 guns weaken the British corps defending the city. Then Moltke attacks and kills the British corps. More German artillery continue the shelling bringing most of the troops down to the yellow with a few redlines.

Understrength German armies decide to attack rather than rest this week doing great damage. Then troops from all over German are rushed to the front and the battle begins. Fortunately we lose nothing but the British losses are as follows:

  • Canada division
  • Trench artillery
  • 4 Armored Cars
  • 3 Rifle A
  • 10 Rifle R
  • Sopith Camel (from gas shell attack)
  • Cavalry
  • anti aircraft gun
  • 8 Light Artillery

4 French Rifle R are also killed near Metz. 2 British Counter battery guns fall and so does Metz.

Trieste - German Trench artillery scores 2 or 3 hits not doing much damage. The Germans decided that enough is enough. The understrength German army attacks killing a Rifle R. 3 more Rifle Rs die at the hands of attacking German Rifle R and A. 2 German Rifle As die while continuing the attack. 2 German Rifle Rs die in a follow up attack. More troops continue the attack killing French Rifle A, 155mm gun capturing the city. 4 German Counter battery guns attack the Italians next. The Germans lose a Counter battery but kill an Italian Counter battery and 2 Italian light artillery.

Man... We need to rethink our tactics... It was a mistake to leave those roads around Metz... I had 32 units in Metz, brand new Corps, all my artillery ... We keep loosing Corps without killing Corps. I hope French 155s are still there to avenge British losses... BEF temporarily stopes to be a fighting force...

The Germans are just too tough in this scenario. I'm not sure I care what happens at the end of the historic period. France and Russia may not physically be in the game at that time. Whereas Germany has a Gazillion Armies, Elite Marines that can defend a city by themselves, etc, etc. You may want to tone down there strength. That suggestion you made the other day about boosting Victory points to a million made me laugh. Sometimes this game can be excrutiatingly tedious as it is. I wouldn't recommed it. Sure, France has great Cannons, England has a great Navy, Russia has a large population, and Italy has great pasta. But that's low-balling the fun factor when fighting Germany. I understand war is hell, but gaming is supposed to be enjoyable. Sometimes it seems Moff is being too nice. Like he's watering down his attacks. This shouldn't be necessary to advance the game. Let's see what happens in the future, but France is looking mighty thin and Germany is looking like Arnold Swartzenegger.

Cyc... All you say applies for the current research status. Germany lost the war in the Fall of 1918, but at the Spring 1918 French were about to loose Paris for the second time. For all 4 years War WAS tedious attempt to break into German trenches. Right now Germany is far behind her historical achievement for this day. Research tanks, research Americans, research White Guard and show those Germans who's boss! They cannot build Marines, by the way... Every historical scenario has it's pro's and con's. If you enjoy blitz rather than trench warfare chose you are welcome to chose WW2 or Mongols.

At Konigsberg, Light Artillery Fails. LA hits A-Inf. for 1HP. LA hits MG for 1HP. Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. LA hits A-Inf for 1 HP, LA fails, LA hits R-Inf for 1HP. LA hit R-Inf for 2HP. LA hits R-Inf for 1HP.

The Nicolas Gang craters the Grasslands NE of Varna.

It appears a Veteran Neutral Guerilla attacked an Ottoman Sipahi and killed it or chased it off, while losing 3HP South of Baku.
____________________________________________

At Metz, 155mm hits R-Inf for 2HP, 155mm hits R-Inf for 2HP, 155mm hit R-Inf for 1HP, 155mm fails, 155mm hits R-Inf for 1HP, Ditto, Ditto, Ditto, Ditto, Cavalry hits R-Inf for 1HP and retreats, A-Inf kills R-Inf and promotes, A-Inf kills R-Inf and promotes, A-Inf kills R-Inf, Ditto but captures worker also, Colonial kill R-Inf, Colonial loses to R-Inf, 155mm hits R-Inf for 2HP, Colonial loses to R-Inf, 155mm hits R-Inf for 2HP, Colonial kills R-Inf, Ditto but promotes, R-Inf kills R-Inf and takes Metz! Some troops move through Metz and attack Germans on the road leading out. 155mm hits AG Sud for 1hp, Ditto, 155mm hits AG Von Moff for 2HP, 155mm hits Sud for 2HP, 155mm hits Von Moff for 2HP, 155mm hits Elite Marine for 1HP, 155mm hits Sud for 1HP, 155mm hits West for 1HP, 155mm hits Von Moff for 1HP, 155mm hits Elite Marine for 2HP.

NE of Athens, the France sinks the great Ottoman hope of the seas, Yavus. Then the Jean Bart sinks the Destroyer with it. No survivors. The Paris sinks an Ottoman AC there with a fantastic explosion. It was difficult to believe there were any survivors, but there were, which the Paris picked up. Then the Jean de Vienne went after one of the Light Cruisers. It too won it's battle and rescued the survivors.

gps to Tigranes.

As a side note, we knew the neutrals were good people, but this is rediculous...
