New Unit - Scots Guardsman

the vikings DID invade Scotland. By the 11th C they occupied the Hebrides, Orkney, Shetland and the far North of the Scottish mainland. It took the Scots until the 15th C to reconquer all this territory.

I am 50% viking myself!

We did kick their blueblooded rears. No matter how many times they 'conquered' us, we sent them packing soon after. (Wallace, Bruce etc).
However the reason the conflict disappears is that in 1606 James IV of Scotland as only living heir to Queen Elizabeth of England was named James I of England. We took their throne and won the war. Of course they try to gloss over this fact along with many other times we handed them a whooping. (note 1967!)

i saw a program about the vikings on the history channel or discovery last night.

Dubbhland, Ireland, was Viking central for a long time. One of the main Viking cities. all trades, etc, went thru there, and since silver was a show of power in Ireland back then that's where they've found the most Viking silver in the world.

they didn't consintrate on Scotland very much, they mostly just went there to get Pict slaves to bring to Ireland. they eventually did invade England, but by then the inhabitants of England had armies and were armed well, and gave the Vikings the only real battles they had, instead of just fighting farmers and such.
 
lab monkey, do you plan on updating this unit like Smoking Mirror showed? it's already good, but the kilt doesn't look right civ specific, and black would be better. please???? :D
 
The name Ireland comes from the word the Vikings used to call the island. It was something similar to 'Ire' (can't be arsed looking it up). The English latter named it Ireland in the 11th/12th century, as they did Scotland and Wales. The Vikings seemed to take to Ireland in a big way, probably because Ireland had no standing army. (all the Irish could do was hit them with guarrilla tactics) They weren't kicked out until 1014 at the famous battle at Clontarf. (Brain Boru)
Up until then Ireland was known as Hibernia by the Romans, Eirean/Eire by the Irish, and Scotland by many European writers.

The Vikings had settlements in the most Northern parts of Scotland, and would latter form the galloglass mercinarys that made up the much needed bulk of ancient Irish armys that fought against the English.

labmonkey, are you planning on fixing the height problem with this unit, and making the kilt black?

has anybody else fixed the height problem?
 
The Scots have not broke the union with England at all.That would imply that the country is devolved which of course it is not.Scotland now has its own parliment to better govern Scottish affairs which is sensible.
During our turbulent history and many wars it is usually forgotten that many more Scots fought with the English(particularly in the lowlands),than fought against them.This obviously was for financial reasons.
Yes England had a larger population than Scotland but in many skirmishes and wars especially during medieval times the forces of Scotland outnumbered the English due to the fact that the majority of English/Welsh troops were on the south coast and on the continent(100 years war with France).
The Last great Scottish army of this time under King David and with French assistance were eventually defeated at the battle of Nevilles cross(near my home).The Scots were reckoned to number around 12,000 men as oppose to the English 3000.The king with such a numerical advantage ignored the advice of several great Scots commanders such as William Douglas and marched straight up the hill into a hail of Longbow fire.The rest is history as they say.The Scots were the masters of Guerilla fighting and it is said by the French that the Scots taught the English how to fight.Set piece battles like the above were not usually their speciality.
I'am a great admirer of the Scots and along with the Welsh and Irish have played a great part in our countries military history and tradition not to mention success.Our combined countries have achieved great things together and i think it would be a shame if that were no longer the case.
In the Nepoleonic wars around 50% of Wellingtons army was made up of Welsh/Scots and irish troops and it was the most formidable army in the world at that time.
A united union is a strong union and i for one would not like to see that change.Anyone interested in this period of history should consult Jonathon Sumptions book 'Trial by battle' which will provide a far better account of this period than any Hollywood movie.

I always edit my Civ games when i play the English to British so this unit is perfect for my Scenario.Although i would never call them mercenarys.The Scots Guards and the English coldstream guards along with a load of your fellow countrymen the Eniskillens and C Rangers were amongst the most feared and capable in the British army at the time.Fighting with great distinction in all the European and Indian campaigns.
I think i'll use them as a superior musketman in my next game because i love this unit 8)

like hell we would never fight for them :P

anyway that was the uniform of scottish troops during about 1750-1900

something that does annoy me is that the english generals used to send scottish welsh and irish troops into combat first.

Wellington at the start of waterloo sent the scots in first to attack and he made a stupid manouver and most of them were gunned down :(
 
im scottish, and i think its about time sum1 put scotland into the game, scotland has been in lots of wars with england, and i think its wrong that scotland should be left of!! GREAT WORK!!

Secondly, there is a Robert the Bruce leaderhead in the Graphics section that you may want to check to add Scotland. :)
