A story that ran in today's Calgary Herald. I don't have an online version.
Cup namesake's beer runneth over
Down 2-0 as they shuffle into Buffalo, perhaps the best chance the Senators have of seeing Stanley Cup in Ottawa this spring is to send and invitation to Saltsburg, Pennsylvania.
That's where they'll find a 57-year-old steel mill employee - not to mention a longtime fisherman on the Ottawa River - whose non-hockey-loving parents named him Stanley and left him to fend for himself. The family never imagined nameing their son Stanley would lead to a lifetime of dubious stares, rolled eyeballs and, on the flip side, the odd free beer.
Try being Stanley Cup for a day. Even simple things like ordering a pizza can cause trouble. A typical reaction is the slamming of the phone.
"I like to watch hockey, but I never played it.", says cup, an ardent fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
A few years ago, Cup ventured to Toronto during the playoffs. When a bar owner found out that Stanley Cup was in the building - it took ID to prove it - drinks were on the house.
"Toronto is a beautiful city," Cup notes diplomatically.
