NOTW XLV: The DOOM Project

End of Day 08

With all seven Relics in hand, the mercenaries began their final ascent towards the surface. At first, their pace was slow and methodical; as they came closer and closer, however, their pace quickened, to the point that they were sprinting towards the stairway.

The memories came back quickly:

* * *

Chapter ??

"We're getting the hell outta here," classical_hero exclaimed as he led the troop onward.

"Under whose authority?" you ask, holding Bobby Keilman's hand as you walk. "Why are we leaving now?"

"I'm under direct orders from Zack," he responds. "Follow me."

"Zack is dead--" you begin to respond, but he doesn't seem to care. Hesitantly, the mercenaries approach the stairway. You hold Bobby Keilman close to your side as you walk -- the lone survivor of a vicious, vicious hellhole.

As you reach the Entryway, a single figure blocks your exit.

classical_hero speaks quickly. "Dreadnought, we're leaving. We have orders to evacuate."

Dreadnought shook his head. "Orders denied." He spoke with an unnaturally soft, calm voice. "We're here to get the Relics, and that's what we're going to do."

classical_hero retorted, "I have word from Zack. We are to leave immediately. We have tampered with things far beyond our scope and power. We must leave."

Dreadnought laughed softly. "I don't know what's funnier -- your cowardice, or that you speak to dead men." His voice remained soft and soothing.

classical_hero said, "Look, you know as well as I that we're dealing with something....strange...here. We're getting backup and returning in force."

Dreadnought shook his head in disagreement. Before he could respond, though, Bobby Keilman squirmed out of your grip and approached him. "Please, sir, I just want to go home. I just--"

Dreadnought's reaction was inhumanly quick. "GET BACK, SCUM!" he roars with a bestial voice, drawing his pistol. He fires three shots into the young boy, sending him collapsing backwards. Death was immediate.

"What the f--" you begin, but Dreadnought speaks again.

"No one is leaving until the mission is complete." Waving with one hand, he motioned towards the stairway, which violently begins to shake with tremors.

"No!" classical_hero screams, drawing his weapon. It was too late; the entrance began to cave in suddenly.

And all went dark.

* * *

You arrive at the stairway and, seeing it clear, advance upwards, keeping one hand to block the sunlight from your weak eyes. You stumble up the final stairs -- is your strength failing you? -- when you finally collapse on the sandy ground above.

The sand! The sun! The sky! You are finally free!

Wait -- who is that approaching from --

Bravo, gentlemen. You really have come through in the clutch. For awhile, I wasn't sure if you'd make it out at all -- what with all the forces aligned against you down there. But you came through with shining colors, and with all seven relics too! I'm sure corporate will be extremely pleased for this effort, and I can assure you, you will all be handsomely paid for this effort.

Now, please give me the Relics to ensure they are passed on to the rightful contractor.

Zack, what are you doing here?

Attempting to hijack the mission, I see.

I can also see you aren't who you appear to be. It sure as hell was your corpse on the floor in the Catalog Room. All the same, they have finished their mission in a stirling fashion; surely you don't intend to trick them one final time before their victory?

I suggest you leave now before things become...complicated

Truth is, gentlemen, I need those Relics -- and not just because we have a contract to settle. See, you have gotten but a little taste of the conflict I have to deal with on a daily basis. You dealt with one Raptor; I deal with hundreds, even thousands, as they lead their fiendish armies in battle to threaten the very existance of earth.

Even with manpower numbering in the billions, we cannot hold them back. I wince at the thought of earth's fate, should our defenses fail. Surely you can relate?

Now, as mercenaries, you have a sense of honor and virtue in your work. I do too. I was hired -- just as you were -- for my mission. My mission is infinitely larger in scope, but fundementally it is the same. I am close to finally completing my mission to save the Earth from this terrible evil.

Besides, Zack seems to be glazing over a very contentious issue. Why don't you tell them about your cronies: classical_hero and CivCube, hmm? If I recall correctly, you were trying to murder these operatives rather than help them. I, meanwhile, had my agents working to the best of their ability to help the squad finish the mission.

You are a thieving, coniving savage; you know nothing of the honor these men live by.

You know, Dreadnought, for all your appeals to honor, I can't quite fathom why you'd take the time to manipulate these soldiers in the first place.

Operatives, do you honestly think his intentions are this noble? Do you see him as the bastion, the bulwark against a greater evil? Do you think he will be content to wield that power against only the evil that lurks in Hell?

I may have ordered my agents to finish the mission at any cost. But, you can understand the magnanimity of these situations. I simply couldn't afford to leave anything to chance; now that I see you succeeded regardless, it brings joy to my heart.

Regardless of those concerns, I still have one significant reason why you should give the Relics to me.

After all, I am the contractor who hired you in the first place. Think back to the datapad on my corpse, the one with the email labelled to "Amsterdam". How do you think I acquired that message in the first place? Do you know that Seon, the long-lost hacker from your team, also found such a message on the Communications computer, except listed as a message sent by Professor Keilman?

You've been working for me, my friends, this entire time. And I will see to it that you are rewarded handsomely.

Need I remind you, however, that you are contractually obligated to finish the mission -- and thus give me the Relics? Your very profession hangs on this single principle, the contractor-mercenary model of honor. You have started this mission; you have seen it through; now, let's call it a day and head home.

Contract or no contract, you ordered your Archangels to kill these men off, one by one. Need I also remind them about the other mission you gave them -- how you cleverly disguised it as "new orders" from a contractor?

You had them murder those innocent people. You knew you miscalculated by bringing too many individuals in. You had to clean up, and fast.

Even I wouldn`t do that.

Now, we can argue semantics all day. To be frank, Zack, I don`t want any of them to have to listen to your heavenly dialogue anymore.

I gave them daily and nightly reports of their survival; I gave them the abilities they used to survive, and I gave them the tools to succeed. I formed the team in the first place, I spent countless hours planning the mission, and I spent even more time tracking their whereabouts and coordinating their moves and actions.

You provided agents to contradict the very mission you sent them on in the first place; that, and abandoned them when things got dicey.

Contract or not, you don't deserve those relics. I do.

Please, operatives, do the right thing.

One Final Vote is in Order

If you wish to give the Relics to Zack, Vote: Zack. This will result in a completion of all BLUFOR objectives -- and maybe some more objectives than the BLUFOR team's alone.

If you wish to give the Relics to Dreadnought, Vote: Dreadnought. This will result in a FAILURE to complete the BLUFOR contract itself -- and may complicate the BLUFOR team's victory status.

Be forewarned, this decision may have more significant and long-lasting consequences than this immediate vote alone.

Vote ends in 48 hours. You may post.

Tally:

Zack (1) -- classical_hero, CivCube
Dreadnought (0)

You know, considering this was a team effort, I'd feel dishonest not allowing your dead comrades to offer their opinion as well.

*snap*

All dead players may also vote, but their vote will only count for 0.5 votes.

It's been a while. ;)

Still can't believe you didn't lynch spaceman or one of the claimed "masons" but... oh well.

Anyway, lets get on to business here. We've completed the objectives and been given a victory.

Obviously our decision may have some impact on what happens next in regards to who stays alive, what we do next, in the sequel (hopefully? :p).

At the moment I am inclined to vote for Dreadnought, but I will reread all the chapter updates to see what I think is the best course of action.

I don't know. I was inclined to give them to Zack.

Then I read that he was trying to kill us all.

It's interesting, but I think that Dreadnought is the better vote. I don't like the 'and others' complete their objective if we give the relics to Zack.

Hmm.

I'm going to throw out a quick theory here, maybe not all of the OPFOR were on the same team. Maybe the Archangels were, and the Fortune Hunter was by himself and maybe the Spiritus raptor as well.

If Zack is taking credit for the archangels, maybe Dreadnought is in command of the Spiritus Raptor.

Not too sure here.

This is a very interesting predicament we have on our hands here, almost like a better version of the ending to Mass Effect 3 in some ways (don't take any offense to this I'm sure this will actually make sense and our choice will make a difference in the long run). The colors would have us seem that Zack is the correct choice for BLUFOR, however the dialogue would have use seem that perhaps Drednought is the correct choice in the long run. I'm inclined to Vote Drednought on this matter.

I, meanwhile, had my agents working to the best of their ability to help the squad finish the mission.

Read this line of Dreadnoughts. Any agents of Dreadnoughts, or anyone else want to speak up?

Unless Spiritus Raptor is your agent Dreadnought?

In that case, considering the storyline with Zack/classical.

I think Zack may actually be a better option, as much as I hate to vote for the guy who killed off my ally.

Why not shoot them both? :p

On a more serious note, I have a fealing that voting Zack will complete all objectives, while voting Dreadnought completes none of them. I am inclined to vote Dreadnought as Zack's men well... Tried to kill us. Dreadnought claims to be fighting Raptor. The fact that two OPFORs vote Zack automatically seals it for me.
Sure, Dreadnought could be lying, plotting to kill us, world domination, or something, but we already know Zack is trying to kill us while Dreadnought brought our allies back, which hardly helps the goal of kiling us (unless its an effort to fool us and he will gain so much power from the relics it will be irrelevant). Also, ordering us to kill the innocents sound like they knew something Zack did not want us to know.

It would be interesting to see what the other OPFORs have to say. Also, Takhisis, you sound like you know something. Speak up.

Still, Dreadnought sounds almost too obvious of a choice.
Nontheless, Vote: Dreadnought at least for now.

For once, I agree with you.

Vote: Dreadnought, who I thank for not trying to kill us.

Vote: Zack

Because Spaceman is voting Dreadnought.

Go read my post chox/ etc

Who are Dreadnought's agents? Pray tell?

OCC: Don't take any of my IC banter/insults/threats seriously, I am roleplaying as a heartless mercenary after all. Also, imagine me inserting tonnes of swear words that are banned on CFC in this post. Yeah. /OCC

IC:

Alright, listen up mates. This is probably going to be one of the biggest decisions that we make in our lifetime. And we will all make this decision for different reasons. Some of you, like our bleeding heart archaeologist dcmort93, will make this decision for "moral" reasons. Others will do it for a scene of honour, even though that's worth less than the end of a frog's nose. But me, I don't have a moral compass. I don't have a sense of honour. If I had those, I probably would have joined the Australian army and helped little children in the Afghanistan or some other hell-hole of a country. But I don't. I, as I suspect many other mercenaries are in this group, am completely self centred. I only care about two things:

My safety and well being and cold, hard cash.

If I only believed in my safety, the choice would be easy. I would give those relics to Dreadnought out of spite. And then I would take immense pleasure in killing Zack myself. I don't like it when people tell me that I'm going to be baby sitting some archaeology expedition, when in fact we're going to be fighting some messed up monsters in an underground cavern in the fight for the fate of the world, while our contractor sends friggin' ANGELS of all things to blow our bloody brains out. I don't like that one bit, mate. I am so tempted to empty this gun into Zack right now, which would be ironic considering I stole them from one of your goons, one of the ones that you sent to kill me. Thanks for the weapon by the way, she's a good gun.

I won't do that, however, for two reasons. One, I don't think that would do much, considering you are some sort of omnipotent dingbat who would be able to survive that. And, I would be forfeiting lots of cold hard cash. If I only cared about my safety and revenge, then I probably wouldn't be in this line of work. If I were to stick it to the man and give those relics to Dreadnought, I would be forfeiting what I came here for in the first place, money.

This puts me in an...uncomfortable position. I could either give valuable goods to my most hated enemy or I could get my revenge and lose one tonne of money. My solution, do the most cliche thing imaginable, take a third option.

Listen up mates, that means you Dreadnought and Zack. If you fell asleep during my epic speech, then just read this bolded bit. I don't like playing by the rules, so I demand the following from Zack:

1) I want $1 million right now. I don't care how much you promised me beforehand, that was before you tried to kill me.
2) With that money I am going to have my own private little island with it's own nuclear shelter to protect against whatever the world can throw against me. I am going to spend my days sipping Pina Colatas and making love to beautiful women. I don't want any of your goons coming near me again. If I see you or one of your "Angels" on my island then I will hunt you down myself.

If Zack then get me those things, then I will give those relics to him. However, if he cannot, or if Dreadnought offers a similar/better deal, the I will give them those relics. And you better think about that fast, because I don't have all day. As soon as I get my cash, I'm going to get the hell out of here, but I can just tell that there is going to be the biggest fight and I'm going to be caught right in the middle of it. Think about that, mates.

I'm stumped. As the BLUFOR special Agent, it was my duty to Night-kill this Evil Entity, whatever it was (maybe I should re-read the updates), as well as ensure the completion of all BLUFOR objectives.

So, well… vote: Zack, just to complete the objective. The only thing I'm afraid of is that classical_hero and CivCube are listed as voting for Zack…

Vote: Dreadnought

Although honestly I would favor killing both of them: one for being an undead abomination and the other for being a jerkass.
