OB01 - Time Gentlemen!

We are a few turns from getting a Great prophet. He wont research all of CS, so I started on Civil Service. When he pops out, he might get all of CS. Then yall can research whatever.

Played my (unevenentfull) turns.
I forgot to take screens, so it's a boring report full of facts :p

T2: Kumbi Salah: Barracks -> Worker
Lose a skirmisher to Alex's archer @ 80% odds
Found Walata: Worker
Great Prphet: Discovers Civil Service
Civil Service -> Masonry (To hook up the Stone)

T4: Mao demands Alphabet :crazyeye: (I refuse offcourse)
Timbuktu: Library -> Great Library (Yeah, after we build a library let's build an even biiger one ! )
Gao: Skirmisher -> Worker

T5: Masonry -> Music (shooting for the free Artist)
Zapotec: Skimisher -> Worker

T6: Lose another Skirmisher at 80% odds to Alex's Archer

T7: Alex asks for peace, but he won't give a tech, no peace then

T8: Kumbi Salah: Worker -> Granary

T10: Won't be able to settle the Iron site

I move the settler back to the other dot near the river.

T11: Peter ens OB agreement

Ideas/Suggestion/Remarks/...
1. I played 12 turns to get us back on a decent number of turns (340 left)
2. You may have noticed i started buidling a nice number of workers, our lands are badly underdeveloped, which causes bad GPT, so I started a massive land improvement
3. Mao canceled OB, if we annoy him some more he might declare :goodjob: .
4. We are looking good, with the copper hooked up, we might be able to take Peter IF he declares.
5. I went Music instead of Construction purely for the GA, there is no direct danger from any enemy so we won't need those catapults right away.
6. Next player should check trade-ability.

Actually, white dot with the gold is still doable with the great artist. The gold and iron are allready mines, so with a great artist, its instant gold and instant iron. Theres also a barb town on our green dot. 3 or 4 skirms and its ours before Toky grabs it.

Got It. I'm looking at 8 to 12 hours before I can play it, though. I assume that we are down to 10 turns now.

I was just going to note that. You beat me to it, Cabledawg. I'm planning on going ahead and taking the barb city during my turns. I'm thinking of holding off on white dot (doubt its going anywhere) during my turns. It is 17 turns until we get the GA, then maybe another 3 turns to get him up there. I'm thinking of saving the city maintenance costs. The downside to waiting is that city could be at pop2 by the time we get the Great Artist.

There was also mention earlier of not trading with Cyrus so that we can develop relations with Peter. At the moment, Peter's worst enemy is good 'ole us! Primarily because of religous differences. Do we still want to go this way? I'm thinking we'd probably be safe to do a Monarchy-CoL deal with Cyrus.

Edit: @Cabledawg: for some reason, I cannot access your dot map from post #62. Any ideas?

I know it's possible with the GA, but we don't have the GA et, so I decided not to settle.

My account at deadzoom can only hold so many pics. Next time, i could spend more time to crop them first so I can hold more. Ill keep an eye on that and only delete pics that arent neccesary.
Im really unsure as to what to do with Cyrus or Peter. Making Peter happy seems tougher than normal. Try making peace with Alex, wait 2 turns, open borders and see if he will trade Monarchy. Alex is the low man, so he will prolly trade Monarchy for COL . Too many people are annoyed with Cyrus. Trading with cyrus is gonna bring down alot of heat on us....that would great if we had construction, but we dont right now.

I assume we still have a monopoly on Alphabet. If so, I'd switch research to Construction to get some Jumbos and then back to Music. We could take the iron from Alex! We should also get some skirmishers up there to pillage the iron and copper. We don't want him coming down on us with phalanxes/swords.

I'm pretty sure that Alphabet was still a Monopoly. But, I don't recall 100% off the top of my head. Civil Service is definitely a monopoly, but CoL is not. Mao already has Currency and Victoria has founded Taoism, so she has Philosophy.

I'm not too sure about this idea. The Greek Phalanx gets a 100% bonus against mounted units. It will be a strength 10 versus a strength 8 for the War Elephant. If we want to go after Alex, I think we need to build Axemen.

Honestly, though, I'm leaning towards making peace with Alex. We have a lot of undeveloped land. We still have land that hasn't been settled. Personally, I think our original plan is a good one and we should just stay the course.

You might check out Imageshack or Photobucket. Both sites will host images for free. You can also upload them here to CFC, as well.

Looking over the save, I realize that we certainly have a lot of needs. We have identified 3 city sites in the northern desert. One of them was founded for us by the barbs  and we have a single Settler for one of the other 2. We have a ton of jungle land down south that will eventually need to be settled, as well. We currently have 6 Workers -- we probably should look at doubling that number in the foreseeable future.

Our military is, of course, pathetic. But, we are not dead last -- just mostly last. We could use a few more Skirmishers, maybe an axe or two, as well. If Mao or Vicky declare on us, some spears would be real handy as they should have horses up north.

@Ozbenno: Yes, we are currently running in beaucracy.

Turn 120 (125 AD)
Take a look at the power graph. Alex has certainly been busy building troops. This probably means he has some metal hooked up, now.

OB01_125AD_Power.JPG

I figure it is probably best to go ahead and sign a peace treaty for even money while the offer is still on the table. Once he has a stack in our borders, he may not be so accomadating.

OB01_125AD_Peace.JPG

I also notice that we have a culture war with Peter at Gao. We could potentially lose our source of copper and stone.

OB01_125AD_Culture.JPG

If you'll notice in the screenshot that Rostov does not have a religion. That means that Rostov's borders were expanded by the construction of a culture producing building: either an Obelisk or a Library. Once a religion spreads to Rostov, we will definitely start losing tiles. In order to bump up the culture in Gao, I decide to switch us to Confucianism.

This change, of course, affects our happiness in our 2 Hindu cities: Timbuktu and Djenne. I do a deal with Alex to pick up Monarchy (and sign OB) and revolt to Hereditary Rule.

OB01_125AD_Trade.JPG

Tech learned: Monarchy

Turn 121 (150 AD)
Djenne finishes: Granary and begins: Axeman :whipped:
Zapotec finishes: Worker and begins: Worker
Gao finishes: Worker and begins: Confucian Monastery
I start a Monastery, not to train Missionaries, but for the +2cpt in our culture war.

IBT:
Japan completes the Hanging Gardens.

Turn 122 (175 AD)
Djenne finishes: Axeman and begins: Axeman

Turn 123 (200 AD)
Because of unit production, I am forced to drop the research slider down a notch to 40%. I'm hoping to bring in enough coins from pillaging the barb city that I can raise it back up. As it stands, we have tacked on another 5 turns to the Music research.

Turn 124 (225 AD)
Kumbi Saleh finishes: Granary and begins: Settler

IBT:
We lose our copper in the culture war. And just in time for the quarry to be built.

OB01_250AD_Culture.JPG

Turn 125 (250 AD)
Since our Axeman in the queue isn't going to finish anytime soon, let's put something ahead of him.
Djenne begins: Skirmisher
In the meantime, I :whipped: the Monastery at Gao for 1 pop point. That should get us our copper back in a couple of turns.
Walata finishes: Worker and begins: Worker

Let the battle of Uzbeck begin!

OB01_250AD_Battle.JPG

While attacking, Axeman loses to: Barbarian Archer (1.38/3) at 22.9 percent.
While attacking, Skirmisher loses to: Barbarian Archer (0.45/3) at 24.9 percent.
While attacking, Skirmisher defeats (3.20/4): Barbarian Archer at 91.8 percent.
While attacking, Skirmisher defeats (4.00/4): Barbarian Archer at 100.0 percent.
Captured Uzbek (Barbarian)
I would have preferred a bit more cash, but hey, it gets us back to 50% on the research slider!

OB01_250AD_Uzbek.JPG

Turn 126 (275 AD)
Gao finishes: Confucian Monastery and begins: Barracks
Zapotec finishes: Worker and begins: Granary

Turn 127 (300 AD)

Turn 128 (325 AD)
A barb Axeman steps out of the fog south of Kumbi Saleh.

IBT:
While defending, Skirmisher defeats (1.12/4): Barbarian Axeman at 80.8 percent.

Turn 129 (350 AD)
We have our copper back, for the time being.
Djenne finishes: Skirmisher and resumes: Axeman
The former barb city of Uzbek comes out of revolt.
Uzbek begins: Granary

Turn 130 (375 AD)

Well sports fans, it appears that I have made a huge mistake! :wallbash: I thought my decision to hold off on founding white dot was a sound one. What I didn't expect was Cyrus' borders to expand to include white dot.

OB01_375AD_Mistake.JPG

Did I mention that this was a huge mistake? :wallbash:

We might still be able to grab the iron with a culture bomb, though. By moving white dot 1SW to that desert tile, we could still grab the iron, gold, and corn for a productive city. It will not be as great of a site since we would lose the two flood plains. However, since that tile is still in the fog, I'm not even sure if it is still available.

Music will be due in 6 turns, and the Great Library in 3 turns. Another Settler will be out next turn. A couple of folks are willing to trade us Construction. But, we'd have to give up our Alphabet monopoly in order to do so. Currency still isn't on the table, which is where I think we should head next. We could use the extra cash from the trade routes.

I've been giving a bit more thought to what to do about White Dot and how to net us some iron. The more I think about it, I'm pretty sure that the desert tile 1SW will be in Cyrus' borders. However, the hill 1NE is definitely not in anyone's borders.

OB01_375AD_NewWhiteDot.JPG

By putting our city on that hill, we lose the corn. We will have 7 floodplains, though. That many would mean a -3 food health penalty. If all 7 are cottaged, we would have 4 food left over. That would be enough to work the gold tile, Cyrus' iron mine, and Alex's copper mine. In other words, it would be a decent commerce and production city. If we farm the floodplains, instead, we could eek out even more hammers.

We could pick up one of the iron mines using this site. Unfortunately, Cyrus would probably get to keep his other iron mine, even after the culture bomb. And, I doubt that we would flip any cities with the culture bomb.

Ozbenno said:
It may be worthwhile settling the GA not culture bombing. Longer term, we will get the resources and keep them. If we just bomb we may steal them now but Cyrus (I thought it was Alex looking at the screenies before) is creative and may eventually win them back.
I understand what you are saying, Ozbenno. And your point is valid.

However, what makes white dot a viable location, since it is so far from our capital, is the gold mine. At size 2, the city can still grow while working the gold mine. The gold mine will allow the city to be self-sufficient once it is in operation. The culture bomb should net us the gold mine. It should also net us iron and copper, both of which are already mined. Once the city gets up some population, it will be able to quickly throw up any (or all) of the culture producing buildings. Throw in Hermitage down the road (and maybe a couple of Cathedrals) and I think we get to keep the tiles. Having those mines allows us to build all of those buildings.
