Official announcement: Hot off the presses. Next Civ game in development!!!!!!!

I'm always amazed at the number of people who think aesthetics don't matter. Like, its the same reason why even business software looks nice because it makes interacting with it a better experience. Aesthetics, visuals, graphics, whatever you want to call it, it matters. If I'm going to spend hours upon hours upon hours looking at something, I want the experience of looking at it to be as enjoyable as playing the game itself.
The work they did on the undersea graphics for Rising Tide is very underrated. Beautiful work.

Unfortunately I disagree on both counts. Civ 3 is neither fun nor good looking to me.
Even if you don't like the epic game, have you tried some of the mods?

Is there really much point in discussing the old iterations :P?

When's Civ7 getting it's own forum?

Probably when we get the official Press Release for 7.

Probably when the marketing campaign officially begins.

When we have any actual information about Civ7, otherwise that new forum would simply double as the "Idea & Suggestions" forum we already have.
(please not the absence of a "probably" in that sentence ^^)

Bruh if Civ7 will have minimum requirements that my laptop won't reach

Come on, you know the drill: New Civ game = new computer.

Not what I meant:
'Nice graphics' and 'hardware demanding graphics' are two different things.
I like nice graphics really. In my Civ4 mod I included some graphical improvements.
But we don't need to walk in the roads of ancient Greece and watch the flowers on the hillside in the same way we can do in Cities Skylines. That game is meant to walk in your own creation. In a Civ game you won't really beautify the area. Not that it wouldn't be nice but the goal and scale of the games are different.
So I'm not against nice and enjoyable graphics. I'm against better and better graphics that's porpoise is only to get you buy new hardware.
Nice graphics SELLS games but the inner content is what KEEPS them play over and over. New games are often like beautiful but stupid women: that look good but...
So nice graphics are good but better put the focus on inner values. Like, when wasn't AI an issue? ;)

It is if you want to discuss which features to keep and which to leave behind.

I was going to say Civ is an odd game to upgrade for, but then again the thread on what other games people play revealed I'm one of the few people here who primarily plays non-strategy games. :p

Um, you do though. Like, that's half of what you do in a culture victory. And, honestly, I like looking at map and zooming in at the details, to see all of the intricacies of the wonders, units, and districts in the game, especially if I do something like an industrial zone complex. It makes the more enjoyable and immersive. And, again, its a nice, pleasant experience to look at nice, pleasant things.

Seaside.jpg

Not the most zoomed in picture, but all of the details on the seaside resorts and water park make the game better, not the opposite.

You mean Civ4?
It was a pretty nice looking game...by the standards of twenty years ago. Though I have to say its gameplay has aged worse than its graphics. I took it for a spin a few years ago while I was bored of Civ6, and...it was not fun anymore.

Civ4 had the foresight of using vector graphics. With Blue Marble, it still looks crisp on a 1440p monitor.
Civ6 had the hindsight of what player groups want, and somewhat managed to cater to all audiences, including hardcore players.

For civ 7, since we truly live in a data aggregation and manipulation age, I hope they will finally take all the iterations of Firaxis games, see what works and what doesn't, so we don't get a joke like Vanilla Civ 6.

I'm hopeful.

Also, from the press release: Jake Solomon is leaving :-/

There's still a lot I like about SMAC, and I basically played no other strategy game for five years or so back when I was really into it, but yeah, all things have their day.

(compared to CiV, which I dropped like a hot potato as soon as I played VI - sorry, no shame on the team that made CiV, but I consider VI an improvement in so many ways)

The graphics debate is interesting, especially as I consider VI's shift to a more stylised style to be a huge part of its charm. I love how the Districts look aesthetically, and how you can build up areas (of colour) within your own empire, nevermind recognise other factions' improvements at a glance. Colour theory is a big aspect of readability for me personally, and honestly Districts kinda came out of nowhere for me (in a good way). So it'll be cool to see where they go.

For the people who wondered if it's Civ7, or another title (like BE2 or another Colonization): It got pointed out on Twitter that there are 7 exclamation marks in the Twitter announcement.
So... has to be Civ7, no :D?

Happy to report quite the opposite, just played a few games. It's... different. Perhaps, when you say "aged" you mean "it's so well known, it's kinda boring". Which is true, I feel it too. It's not exciting as it used to be. But, it's because it's like The Bible. We know literally everything about the game, inside out.

I've actually been juggling 4, 5 and 6. I think 4 has A LOT of good desgins that should be brought back (for one, the way tech tree functioned, the bonuses and free stuff you could get, like not being able to work sea tiles without fishing). I also enjoyed the variety of buildings (biggest gripe with 6), Random Events, and the more general Empire-building feel that 5 and 6 started to move away from.

I only got this computer three years ago and I'm a broke masters' student lol

It is top of the line at the time I bought it though. I can run AAA games well (from 2019 prior).
