Official Civ4 S&T Off-Topic Thread

I think part of the reason is because they have their attack/defense slider set all the way to 5 in attack.

Checked out Burgundy, and it turns out they have Offensive AND Land warfare at the maximum, plus NIs that give them a morale bonus. This is not counting their insanely high Army tradition which spits out generals that eat armies twice their size for lunch.

Welcome back.
Out of curiosity how'd the tournament go?

It wasn't great. My partner and I are great debaters, but our case just wasn't very good relatively speaking. We've gone to finals and semi-finals in other tournaments, but this time we went 3-3. Another team from our school went 4-2 and were supposed to go into the elimination rounds but there were too many 4-2 teams I suppose. I'll just give a basic rundown of public forum debate. You have a partner. You and your partner write a pro and a con case on a resolution that was released. The December resolution was "Resolved: On balance, standardized testing is beneficial to K-12 education in the United States". You write a case arguing for and against it using data, statistics, etc. Then, at the round, usually, a coin is flipped. The winner can either choose whether they go pro or con, or they can choose whether their team goes first or second. Within each team is a first and second speaker. I'm the first speaker in my team. So the first speaker of the first team gives a 4 minute speech, then the first speaker of the second team does the same afterwards. Then the two first speakers have a 3 minutes crossfire to ask questions and try and shoot holes in the other person's case. Then the second speaker on both sides gives a 4 minute rebuttal speech and then the two second speakers have their own crossfire. Then the each first speaker gives a 2 minute summary speech, which is followed by a 3 minute grand crossfire where everyone on both teams goes at it. Finally, each second speaker gives a final focus, and then that's the end of the round. The judge tallies the round and figures out who won.

@CK: I feel for anyone who has to argue either side of that issue.

Well Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it. I don't know if I'll be able to get on tomorrow but from the 24th until fairly late at night on the 26th I'll be overseas and thus super busy. Don't tell my family that I deliberately arranged that - way to much time and effort went into pretending I wanted to be home for the holidays and that I didn't want to go on this trip for anyone to ruin my plan now.

I so understand you!
That's why I'll also be leaving for the entirety of the holidays, though I did not hide from anyone that I wanted to get away from everyone for a few days.

Merry christmas!! :D:D

Happy New Year's Eve everyone!

Happy new year! :band::hammer::newyear:

Given that we have a fairly large IAAR (Noyyau) and two newly started ones (Freyhorn and Europa) I'm wondering if another one would be well received or would be a total flop.
If you think it would be better for me to wait to start it I will. If not, then I'll probably start it near the end of January.
Here's the cover summary:
Spoiler :
The Roman people feel safe. They are not scarred of anything, there are a dozen legions on guard to protect them from any threat. Local guards trained to the same level as legionnaires patrol the streets and man the walls. The roads are kept safe by patrols of armed riders. There is no threat of domestic insurrection or revolt.
The Roman people believe that they are safe, that there is no threat to their lives… they are wrong.

Bring your inner dark side to the privy council. The council that the empire’s spies report to, that legions take their orders from, where the empire's laws are written and where elaborate plans to destroy the empire's enemies are drafted and put into action.. Made up of the closest confidants of the emperor; his advisors, generals and the greatest nobles of the empire. Engage in subtle diplomacy both within and without the council. Arrange for events to support your family or to destroy your foes. Build your empire within an empire while serving its highest authority. Play your rivals against each other and keep your cards close to your chest. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer as you navigate the treacherous waters and back ways of the Roman Empire.

That does sound quite interesting, though I would not be able to dedicate time to it, I'm already unable to make the usual weekly update to my own thing.

I'm slowly returning guys. Whoa that was a very long time away from here. And it'll take me quite some time to get updated on what has been happening, but it's great to be back :D

Alright, that's it. If no one has the decency to reply to anything I write, could they at least tell me why? Again, I think I already know the answer, but if it is something else I would really appreciate knowing what it is.

I don't really read/use this sub-forum since I joined this site, so I can't really say.

My only advice is write a story for your own entertainment.
Something you'd enjoy reading if someone else wrote it.
Since we are all humans, if you like something, there should be lots of other people who will like it too.

If you are author, the thread is up to you.
Take charge, make it what you want it to be. :crazyeye:

Maybe write more?
The Japan has 2 entries and the Phoenician has 1 entry.
Also, the Phoenician link in your signature appears to be broken. I get DNS error when I click on it.

Civ 4 is slowing on these forums and participation is a bit down, but should always be around if there is still fun.
Stupid Windows 10 has put a huge killing on Civ 4 Vanilla and Warlords.

Keep in mind we have many many lurkers here. People who just read through some of the stuff but never say a word. I'm extremely guilty of doing that. I know its hard to finish a game of civ, I only very seldom do it, but if you are feeling it try to stick it out with a story to the bitter end, even if you lose spectacularly it is fairly satisfying. Especially when you destroy half the world with nukes in the process.

I've become a lurker too, unfortunately. :hide:
