Official System Requirements

Well, it wasn't entirely clear if that's indeed the on you have in your laptop. If it is, I would not (pre-)order before you have gotten the demo to work.
Sorry for the confusion, and thanks for the advice. :goodjob:

Well it sucks you need a titan computer to even attempt playing this. Watching the videos the graphics don't appear even to be that good to be up to these specs.
I'm gonna vocally agree to this, mostly because I've been wanting starting a thread stating just that (but I know better).

Consider that my impotent vent.

Right.

I'm going to build a computer that beats recommended specs for ~$400 so you don't need that much of a titan

Has Firaxis explained why the system requirements are what they are?
Has anyone even asked?
Does it have something to do with the multithreaded support referenced here

I'm hoping they racked it up higher then it really is to get less complaints that it doesn't run on the presented specs. I hope at least.

I worked my ass off in some terrible tesco job to get £600 to buy that laptop. This was less then 3 months ago. That's about $950. I run battlefield 2142 on it on top spec, also of course the civ 4 game without troubles. Those of course are very old games. So, I ran Armed assault 2 and could play it on high. (not very high)

Try the Mafia 2 demo off of Steam. I've been told by some of the gurus here that it seems to have the exact same GPU specs as CIV V. Also its made by the same company.

Just did a can you run it test, way over the minimum specs and almost touching the recommended. Of course, it was my graphics card that was the let down.

but won't that mean you just spent $450 to play a game?

i mean, did you need to build that new computer before now?

You could run ArmA 2 on high
That one also has stated requirements pretty close to Civ5. But still, no guarantees ...

High terrain/effects etc. Could walk with no choppiness/lag. Unless I spammed lots of units, but that of course would happen to everyone. :D

$450 for a gaming computer =/= a 'Titan computer'.

That is incredibly cheap for a PC to play a game on. Likely people need upgrades or new computers because they only buy chap nasty ones in the first place that end up obsolete within 12 months.

Also, for your correction, it isnt $450 to play 'a game'. Its $450 to play 'games'

Well, if we're being technical, that's $400 for the right to pay for games.

And I don't know that that's any better...

New Civ Game has always meant new rig for me.

Heres what I ordered this morning:
-GIGABYTE GV-R577SO-1GD Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5
-CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
-Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core
-GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3 LGA
-new power supply
-new hard drive
after rebates total 572.93.

-existing case
-existing dvd

I think I did alright, let the wait for Tuesday begin :)

Civ 4 is like how old now? 5 years?

How can anyone expect that a $400 PC bought 5 years ago to play Civ 4 should be capable of playing Civ 5 today?

Really? Arma 2 isn't very well optimized either.

Arma 2 minimum requirements are

Dual core Intel Pentium 4 3,0 GHz/ Inter Core 2,0 GHz/ AMD Athlon 3200+
1 GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 7800/ ATI Radeon 1800 (256 mb)

Arma 2's visuals are of much greater detail than Civ 5's, The high requirements are still difficult to believe for me.
