This seems more like a software issue than a hardware one; it may be simpler to fix your laptop than to get a whole new computer.

I googled a code one time and it just gave me a few generic crash help links. Where should I take it to get it checked out?

Hmmm... you sure you couldn't find anything? Usually if you search enough something is bound to appear.

But if you actually want to take it to a place for a checkup, I don't know. I've only owned desktops, so I know how to deal with those. Laptops were always too brittle and finicky (also expensive) for my tastes.
