Oh, the weather outside is...

No. They aren't.

Except for in supermarkets, hospitals, and higher-end offices.

But then they're not usually necessary.

Yeah, that makes sense. I wonder if you guys are going to start using them more and more, with climate change, and so on? Or I guess the alternative is to just go grocery shopping every day and stay at the grocery store for 12 hours each day

There was a summer a few years ago when we were still getting temperatures in the high 20s/low 30s in September. Considering that it's not unusual to get the first snow in September (it doesn't usually stay more than a few hours or overnight at most), that was torture. I'd just moved into a basement suite that faced west, and it was like living in a sauna. So I made sure the cats had water and as cool a place to sleep as I could manage, and spent as much time as possible at the mall. They had a kiosk that sold slurpee-like drinks, so between those and the air conditioning and a magazine I used as a hand fan, I managed. Barely.

It rained a little today, and the wind has picked up again. Nothing like last night, thank goodness. Trees are still down all over the place and people have been told to stay off one of the main thoroughfares downtown - exactly where I need to go, of course, since that's the area where my bank and post office are - and I've been trying to fathom what damage could have happened there. There aren't many large trees on that street, so maybe some roofs or signs blew off, or maybe some windows.

Yeah. Weed whacking in 105 degree weather is not fun.

Oddly, the hotter it gets, the less onerous I find hard physical labor. If I'm going to break a sweat sitting still, I may as well get up and do something.

Humidity on the other hand...

Yea, but weed whackers suck past 100 degrees. The two stroke is hot, the air is already lower oxygen so the exhaust is worse, all the debris cakes and bakes onto you, and I'm always left starting to wonder if sandals are worth the risk. :hmm:

. . . clement.

We always complain about inclement weather; I just think weather should get the credit of our recognition on those occasions when it isn't inclement.

:twitch:

If it's that thick just buy a goat and sell it once it's caught ya up.

Yikes!

Okay, things are worse downtown than I'd thought. It's closed because there's no power, not necessarily due to uprooted trees (although there are undoubtedly some of those, hopefully not the big ones in City Hall Park).

And I appear to be in an oasis of electricity. The neighborhoods to the immediate north, east, and south are still out. West of here is apparently okay, at least in this older neighborhood.

It's just started pouring with rain. Which is rather welcome after the record breaking heatwave.

It's a breezy 20 or so outside, which makes me think that the recent hot weather is a little like a lazy athlete - it stays just long enough to break a record and then clears off immediately.

The wind has picked up over the last 20 minutes or so. This had better not be a rerun.

Meh! Smattering of rain. Not enough to wet a weasel's wigwam.

I shall have to get the hosepipe out. Again.

Speaking of windy weather, somebody posted this on Imgur, though I'm not sure where it was taken:

That looks like a lot of artificial turf has been torn up too.

I was talking to someone on the phone today, who said the storm had been classified as some sort of tornado - not the regular kind. I haven't read the news yet, so I'd have to confirm that for myself.

She said she lives in Normandeau (a couple of neighborhoods north of me) and that her house didn't lose power at all, but 4 houses down, the house was wrecked - shingles came off, trees uprooted, windows broken... Apparently the storm really wrecked things in the northeast part of town, so I got off very lightly with just a few hours without electricity and we've had no notices going around that there was any damage to the building or grounds here.

I've seen some Twitter photos of the neighborhood, though, and the power lines were down, parts of trees were in the road, on top of cars, etc. So that photo doesn't actually surprise me. There are a lot of homes that are still being built in the north and east subdivisions. It looks like those people are going to have to redo their lawn, but they're the ones who had to wait longer to get their electricity back.

The wind is blowing today, but not as bad. I suspect that really windy days are going to make people a bit nervous here for awhile.
