Oh, the weather outside is...

I read that Phoenix hit 119F yesterday (about 48.3 C), their 4th-highest recorded temperature. A Phoenix meteorologist tweeted that it was 103F/39.4C... at 10:00pm. American Eagle airlines canceled 50 flights out of Phoenix because the maximum safe temp for the planes they fly is 118. The record for Phoenix is 122F/50C, from June of 1990.

It's actually pretty nice today in DC, so far. We had some thunderstorms on Monday and they did help cut the humidity, last week was largely disgusting.

Only good thing : the residential building I'm living in at the moment has a swimming pool. It's small and shallow, but it's still heaven after being cooked alive during the day.
Also, today it was used by a rather large group of young women (who I suppose were medical students hanging out at the place of those among them who had the good idea of living in a residential building with a swimming pool :p). Too young for me I'm afraid (it's hard to get old *sigh*), but I still enjoyed the eye candy and the discussions.

According to the mayor, cleanup will take weeks.

As you can see by scrolling through the photos at the top of the page, some parts of the city got hit pretty bad (literally). That Mark's store is close by, at the nearest mall. Village Mall and Parkland Mall are across the street from one another, a few blocks away.

There must be a lot of trees down for them to close the entire park system. Back in the 1980s it was decided to put in walking, hiking, and biking trails throughout the city, and to accommodate the wildlife migration. So there are a lot of forested areas that are likely a mess right now.

I remember the summer in DC, and largely disgusting is a good description

Last week was nutty. Temperatures going up to 32C, with 80%+ humidity, at times 90%+. So at times with humidex the temperature was 38C (100.4 F)

This week is a lot more manageable. It's sunny and only 21C out, 23C with humidex. So at night I don' thave to have my AC on. I definitely needed it for the last week and a half or so.

It's now the hottest June in the UK for 40 years. Thank God I've only needed to leave the house once so far this week.

Not to my knowledge, no.

But it's 28C with 60% humidity right now, = 35C with humidex. According to the internet anyway

How do you survive?

Well, if I remember from growing up you wander around the house in your underwear, fans are a godsend and, if necessary, sleep on the floor.

Maybe they're to divert attention away from the fact that you aren't wearing any pants?

We call those traditional leg coverings trousers. If we're not wearing pants, we're "going commando".

I'm also not living in London, so it's probably cooler with me than in the City, right now.

Given the quality of the hat I think I really need to pay closer attention the next time the queen speaks if this is the theory we're going with. Aint lyin'. I'd look.

We are also having a heat wave here (up to 37°C with high humidity) and I had to work for eight hours today in personal protection equipment  (i.e. closed safety shoes, long work trousers, shirt plus lab coat, rubber gloves and protective eye-wear) - I drank 3 liters of water during work and still felt dehydrated :crazyeye: afterwards and was very happy to get a shower.
