Oh, the weather outside is...

It's official, Hell has frozen over.

Even Hell, Mich., froze over: The community outside of Ann Arbor was expected to see temperatures drop to minus-26 overnight into Thursday. The nearby University of Michigan took the rare step of canceling classes through Thursday.

Also, this is what Michigan looks like from space

No frozen Hell or dystopia here. A mere 3F/-16C when I left the house this morning, and with almost no wind. Everything seemed to be working, more or less. I decided to risk only 1 pair of long johns. 2 pair always feels too snug. My legs were a little chilly, but as long as I kept moving it was alright. My eyes were watery and my cheeks were stinging but not burning. I bought a new pair of gloves before the holidays that are actually too warm for 20-30-degree weather. They're not that thick, I don't know what the heck they're made of, but today was one of the few days my hands weren't overheating. I did have to wear my coat's hood up, over my hat, which I find annoying because it restricts my hearing and my peripheral vision, and doesn't turn with my head. I see people walking around in what looks like Autumn attire to me, but this is manageable cold. A colleague just called me from home and asked how I got to work today. I mean, come on, it's cold out, it's not the apocalypse.

I bundled up quite a bit today for the bike ride into work, face was a little cold but the rest of me is fine. I wore thick woolen socks rather than the usual flimsy 'office socks', wore sweat pants under my work pants, and two hoodies under my big, thick down jacket. Also tucked the hoodies' hoods under my bike helmet to protect my ears.

I saw maybe ten or twelve other people biking (I assume to work) this morning.

Oh also the bathroom sink pipes were frozen again this morning so I had to use the shower to rinse my hair and face.

This will probably be the coldest day of the year in DC.

You might want to make a point to stay home when the temperatures begin to climb in case your pipes have burst while freezing and flood your apartment. That or have your landlord preemptively inspect and fix them.

Yeah, I know. This has happened before with no problems so I am somewhat optimistic that will be the case again but I am planning to let the landlord know anyway.

It was -14 f this morning. Then a gas compressor station exploded yesterday so the gas company is telling businesses to shut down and people to turn down their heat so they don't have to do partial shut offs and can handle the load.

Also that michigan photo lolol. I was up north on monday, planning to drive back. Traverse city area, or top left "corner" of the glove in that pic. It snowed around 14 inches that day, all day so we stayed an extra day. They just couldn't keep the roads clear. Drive home tuesday was still awful. Roads were clear then but wind whipped up snow and we got a whiteout nearly every other mile for a good quarter mile or so where you couldn't see more than two car lengths in front of you. It was slow going.

Just as forecast the Lake Effect has set up shop over one spot and dumped ungodly amounts of snow in a small focused region:

The State Police closed Interstate 81 to truckers and buses because of previous experiences where the truckers end up clogging the interstate due to traction issues. So what did the truckers do? Just take the state route instead (which parallels I-81), with the following result:

Do you hear banjos in the distance?
In the editorial where I got the idea that Missouri and Missouruh are two separate states, the author said we can't even agree on whom to root for in Deliverance. I'm not sure he's wrong.

It's been snowing for the last couple of hours in Gloucestershire, with more predicted in the morning. It would have been less disruptive if it had come a day later.

Currently -2C. It's supposed to snow tonight and tomorrow, but only get down to -22C by morning. That's not as bad as people here have been telling me.

There's a bit of snow lying around this morning down here in Surrey. Looks like a couple of cms at most though.

It's been snowing constantly for the last three hours and (probably) half the schools in the county are closed. I wonder if snowed all night as well.

It's going to get cold this weekend in Edmonton. Winter's been a real rollercoaster here this year.

We often get worse snow and cold than anywhere in the UK in Edmonton, but I've only seen the schools close twice here in my lifetime - for teacher's union strike actions.

When I was young, they just made us bundle up and trudge to school like Antarctic Explorers.

Strong winds, six meters high waves, sea foam, saltpeter and sand flying around everywhere. It has yet to get to the point where waves start to destroy the promenade and flood the streets reaching the cathedral like last year though.

Over here in Ireland on Tuesday and Wednesday it snowed both days. It also snowed last year too which is odd, in the past snow used to every around once every 3 years on average.
