Paradox Interactive games

Apparently, Paradox in their infinite wisdom has decided that any new releases will require Steam.

Pity, since EU4 was looking promising. :(

EDIT: Apparently Stardock has capitulated as well. The expansion for Fallen Enchantress will require Steam. :(

Perfect! Will make it so much easier to acquire them.

Steam makes up the vast majority of their sales now, and I don't know about EU4, but CK2 and others can be run directly from the .exe file without launching Steam. I haven't tried it myself though.

Steam's auto-patching is getting annoying though.

I agree, auto-patching blows.

Not a fan of a company acquiring a near monopoly.

Steam's autopatching is why I generally acquire a less than legal version that I can keep at an older version if necessary (the STALKER games and EU3 being the two games I usually do this for, as most mods for STALKER (at least Shadow of Chernobyl) require version 1.0004 whereas Steam patches the game to 1.0005, and for EU3 I like having both a copy of 5.1 and 5.2)

Johan says they will fix that update issue.
It reduces support costs dramatically as well.

Anyway, with the new Steam system there are possibilities to let users decide which patch-version they want to play, and be able to switch effortlessly. This is something we are looking into for eu4.

Steam is good, y'all will see the light eventually.

Excellent news! Steam's existing "please don't patch my game" options don't work reliable or with every game.

Also, good news for those whom Steam's offline mode doesn't work reliable for, you don't have to run Steam to paly the game.
For those of you who dislike the Steam auto-updates out there(or maybe Steam altogether). Please note that Steam is only required to install the game, but not required to run it. Steam can be configured to also act as a DRM for games, but currently we do not use this feature for our games(and there are currently no such plans in motion that I'm aware of).

I guess it was inevitable with all the people getting issues with incompatible expansions and DLC bought in places other than Steam when they have the steam version. It really leaves studios with the only choices being to go either no selling on steam or steam-only. Kind of anti-competetive of Steam IMO. Though I really won't mind having the games on steam as long as they stay DRM-free.

Also I worry for the future of GamersGate now...

EU4 might use a new patching system in steam, where you can choose your patch version.

Edit: You can still buy from gamersgate - the steam keys.

Looks like East vs West will have the coolest naval system ever!

Saw that the other day, I'm drooling as well!

I'm looking forward to EvW more than EUIV.
