Paradox Interactive games

I'm giving Crusader Kings a try for the first time, playing the Count of Cornwall. I have no heir and my eldest daughter has the "lustful" and "indulgent" traits. My wife hates me and I don't have enough money to get her assassinated. I'm sure there's a sitcom about this somewhere.

CK is awesome.

It's very difficult to get a hang of things and the graphics are somewhat offputting, but the personal drama is unmatched! :)

I've been playing Victoria for years, and recently bought Victoria 2.
I am a bit disappointed, but perhaps it comes from that I don't something.
1) In Vic1 you could micromanage everything. Can't I still do it in Vic2?
2) Do the factories build themselves?
3) What does the national focus do? Can I focus something else than a chosen industry in a province?
4) Why can't I colonise provinces?
5) Sometimes, I get a possibility to add a new cause of a war, which costs infamy, however. Most of the time I do not, however, and it's silly: I am attacked, defend myself and win a devastating victory against my enemy, capturing his entire territory, and all I can do is ask for a white peace?
6) How much bad boy do I need to become the pariah?

During my first game, I played Austria. I got Bosnia from Turkey, and then I was attacked by Prussia and allies, so I annexed 2 small german states and forced Posen and Silesia from Prussia itself, and suddenly EVERYONE wanted to "contain" the horrible me: France, UK, USA, Russia, Sardinian, Papal States, Two Sicilies, Persia, Japan, Corea, Vietnam, Cambodia (sic! The glorious Cambodian War of Austrian Containment), later even Bavaria and Baden backstabbed me.
USA started three wars to contain me. France and UK would also, but they got busy containing each other. Eventually it got tedious and I decided I will not be annexing. I started a new game, got the Bosnia, got attacked by Prussia... and can't demand anything, not even money, from it.

I also think it should be possible to offer money for peace.

Damn it!

I eventually saved enough cash to have that old witch bumped off, but somebody discovered it and I lost a ton of prestige. I married my spymaster who I'd turned down a fling with earlier, and she was much more receptive to my rights as a husband.

Only one of my eight children was a boy, but he was awesome. He had excellent skills and traits. Just before he came of age he died of illness, and two years later my current wife had me assassinated.

My titles and county were inherited by my eldest daughter's son from France!

I'll answer what I can.

2) Do the factories build themselves?

If you have some capitalists with money in their pockets, yes. And if you're in a laissez-faire government, that's the only way factories can be built.

3) What does the national focus do? Can I focus something else than a chosen industry in a province?

The hover-over text explains the national foci...

4) Why can't I colonise provinces?

Your liferating needs to be low enough to colonize the province. Liferating is lower by Machine Guns, Nationalism & Imperialism, and Medicine(?).

6) How much bad boy do I need to become the pariah?

I'm pretty sure it's 35.

You tripped the infamy limit...

Infamy limit is 25.

Also, for 2, if you have planned economy, they won't build themselves. You have to build them yourself.

Cornwall is not an easy nation to start as. I managed to (re)unite the UK as a modified Cornwall (made the base income higher and changed the Dynasty name to my surname :mischief:) which was fun but tricky.

Good starting nations in CK are Apulia, Barcelona and Flanders. The former is probably my favourite nation in the game. Small enough to allow you take take the game in your preferred direction but big enough that you don' spend the first 100 years twiddling your thumbs.

I started a game as Toirrdelbach, Duke of Munster and Count of Desmumu, and 23 years later, I had united Ireland and fought bloody wars in the Holy Land. Turlough's grandson, Murdoch, was King of Ireland, Duke of Meath and Count of Ulaid, and had favoured his son and heir Scanlan as Duke of Munster and Ulster.

It's very hard-going and the family politics is unbelievably complex. Looking at my game just a few months later is like skipping three books in a saga - the names are familiar, but the situation is alien!

Apulia is one of the most fun starting nations: lots of infidels to destroy, a kingdom to create quite early in the game, rich Italy next to you. I'd also recommend Östergötland: Finland and Baltic pagans are easy to conquer, you have a good chance to be elected the king of Sweden etc.. Also for some reason, in nearly all of my CK games the three Nordic kingdoms manage to create huge wars against eachother, which is always jolly good fun.

The manual for Pride of Nations can now be downloaded from this link:

http://www.prideofnationsgame.com/

If you click on game info it will then have a link on the right hand side where you can download the manual.

It gives you a decent idea of what the game is all about. It's not for the faint of heart. Lol.

The forum link however on that page is screwed up and takes you to the Cities in Motion forum page for some reason. :crazyeye:

The forums are here:

As far as Crusader Kings goes, it's awesome. ^^ I can't wait for CK2.

I just got Crusader Kings... and DAMN is that game complicated and unintuitive (Much more so than EU3...)

are there any good tutorials out there?

It's not really complicated, the interface is just bad.
Search for Let's play Crusader Kings on YouTube. There are some good videos.

Do you know when the demo will be out?

Do you know when the demo will be out?

I suspect within a couple of days. They said mid-May so they seem to be running behind schedule a bit but it should be very soon. Still, they have daily updates with info about the game and even on weekends so it's all good. Dying to try it out though. :)

With the demo you can play any of the "Great 8" Powers for 12 game turns (6 months).

You also can run through the 5 tutorials.

Sounds good! I've been lurking around the forum the last couple of days, and the game looks very interesting. Saw a thread about multiplayer, where one person said something about months/years to finish a game. :crazyeye:

Nothing happens when I try to download the manual. :/

I had the same problem. It took about 4 or 5 tries before it finally worked. For other people it seemed to work perfectly. I'm not sure what the deal is. :(

It will literally take months to finish a game. Years and years for PBEM games. I'm kind of excited about that for some reason. :P

Thanks, it works now. :goodjob:

The manual is quite... extensive. I like it. :D

No problem. :)

This game is definitely going against the trend in pc gaming as of late, that's for sure. ;)

I think AGEOD and Paradox will do great things together in the future.

Bodes well for people that like games with depth, realism and lots of history mixed in.
