Paradox Interactive games

The demo freezes when it ends the third stage of the loading screen. Does anybody have the same problem?

I fortunately didn't encounter that problem. I know that people that had ATI cards seemed to have more problems than others.

Here is a thread about someone who had trouble starting his game as well. Hope that helps.

If you are a Paradox forum member you could start a thread about it here as well:

You can now pre order Pride of Nations (pr0n for short ;)) off of GamersGate for $20. If you pre order you get the Spanish American War of 1898 for free. (It will also be sold separately for $2.95.)

You should get Darkest Hour instead, if only for the better map (actually, this is REASON NUMBER ONE). Much more challenging, I think, since it lacks province-based chokepoints by design (so you have to think about terrain and stuff when establishing a defensive line). I embarassedly report that I took months to fight Poland while Britain and France swept all the way to Berlin in my last game as Herr Fuhrer (Britain in particular surprised me since in HoI2 it never attacked from the sea, even if I didn't have a single unit defending the North Sea shores).

I'm playing DH now and apart from the map and more interesting tech tree there's a huge improvement in performance. Seriously, the game just flies even in the later years, making it much more feasible to complete a long campaign than in other versions of HOI2 (I've played both standard HOI and Arsenal of Democracy). There might be some balance issues left to address in patches, though; it seems the German AI hardly ever does very well against the Soviets (losing is one thing; consistently getting pushed back a year or two early without ever gaining much ground is another thing) while on the other hand the Japanese do unreasonably well (handily rolling over the Chinese and then continuing on into Southeast Asia and India almost every time, it seems).

Also, the Kaiserreich mod is pretty awesome. A what-if scenario where the Central Powers won WW1, and now it's 1936 again and things are pretty messed up: Radical socialists have gained power in Britain and France and half of Italy; British royalists have gone into exile and are trying to turn the old Commonwealth against the British socialist state; France is spoiling for a rematch against Germany; ethnic and ideological unrest is brewing in various places; civil wars are threatening to break out both in Russia and the USA (which has been stuck in a solid isolationist decline for two decades). It's fun and unpredictable (although again, some weirdness remains to be patched out, for instance there are some broken events that can lead to situations that should be logically impossible).

Kaiserreich is easily the best alternate history mod out there for any game. It's even a moderately decent alternate history (although a lot of things seem to have been changed just for the sake of being different, not because there was any real cause and effect), which is almost impossible to find.

New starting point in 1861, allowing players to experience the US Civil War from the start.

Bah. I want more starting points. You're milking this, Paradox, shame on you. Shame.

Manufacture reasons to go to war with other countries, all in the name of the great game of power.

YES!

Civilize your country with various new reform paths to ultimately become equal to the western nations.

:( With Paradox's history of representing non-European countries, I'm not optimistic.

Invest in building infrastructure and factories in other countries to strengthen their ties to you.

YES!

Deeper political system with new national focus options and new types of reforms.

YES!!

A new system of popular movements that can be appeased or suppressed, but if ignored, will become the revolutionaries of tomorrow.

Eh. You'll probably screw this up. (prove me wrong!)

Improved interface, with more information easily available and improving gameplay.

Well... alright, I guess.

Win some, lose some.

Paradox has announced an expansion to Victoria II entitled A House Divided.

Sweet! I was really hoping for a Vicky II expansion.

Strange name though. Sounds like they are focusing on the ACW. :P

Anyway, Pride of Nations has been released.

I'm having a lot of fun with it so far. ^^

PoN is awesome, so deep

Agreed. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

It's got that one more turn feeling to it. :D

Drain those wetlands in Karelia...Build that Railroad in Smolensk...Build that Sewer System in Kiev...Fight those rebels in the Caucasus...Stir up trouble with the neighbours...oops...It's 2 AM. :crazyeye:

It still needs patches and work in some areas but overall I'm quite impressed. :)

Why is that a problem, Tyrant?

I hope the Victoria Expansion will solve a lot of the issues I have with Victoria.

I found the game a bit of a disappointment due to the lack of enough historical elements, the heavy restrictions in declaring war, the provincial system, the colonisation of Africa and Asia is non-existent, the failure to properly represent Indian-British relationship, how impossibly quick it takes China to industrialise. I am disappointed at the lack of 'missions' in it unlike those of EUIII. And how random the land-grabs are. Or how hard it is for the Balkans to revolt. And overturning slavery and passing other reforms are just too easy. AND I WANT MY TROOPS TO AUTO-UPDATE THEMSELVES LIKE THEY DO IN HOI or EUIII!

I actually wish there was a way one could swap territories with another power in terms of both diplomacy and in war. Though Im quite sure that it would be quickly abused by AI.

Still... the game has a lot of potential. And EUIII took at least 3 expansions to become the awesome game it is today...

Why is that a problem, Tyrant?

It's happened multiple times and I've seen other incidents in the Paradox forums. As fun as Victoria II is, the scripting of the Civil War is pathetic, it's nearly impossible to avoid Louisiana from joining the Union.
