If you don't already have it, I'd recommend Darkest Hour over HoI3; DH is cheaper and imo better.
HoI3 really needs its expansions, as its base is not very good. DH has a much nicer map and more and better mods.

It was an absolute goddamn mess in its early releases. However, it's a LOT better now with the expansions and the rather excellent game underneath has really come out.
However, it has an absolute brick wall barrier to entry; more so than any of the other Paradox games (which is really saying something). Everything has an absolutely obsessive level of complexity, which the game does very little to help you grapple with (except for just letting you set various aspects of the game to AI control). If you control your troops manually, there is a LOT of micromanagement - although you can set parts of your army to AI control (it does an okay job, for the most part) and focus on particular engagements, or just play hands-off general and give each army/armygroup a particular set of objectives and aggression level.
But yeah if you can get past the brick wall, it's pretty fantastic as a stupidly in-depth WWII simulator. And don't even bother if you're not going to get the expansions.

I bought HoI2 some decade

It takes some time to get used to the game (in my first HoI1 game I lost against Poland as Germany 
), but once got the ropes the game is really, really nice.
Although I'd suggest to grab Arsenal of Democracy. Basicially a standalone mod for HoI2 that added A LOT of cool features (e.g. ships have to return to port to resupply instead of being able to run infinite missions at sea). It also has the best simulations of strategic air warfare in the whole series.

It is a great game (with all expansions) but you have to be prepared on unprecedent level of complexity. While economy, policy, production and research are quite intuitive and "easy", managing your armies is often royal pain in as*s. However, there are some applications that makes it easier - like army oganizer.

I know that feel. On the other hand, my wallet is happy. Means I won't need to overreach with EU4, Planetary A, The Old Gods, and EvW.
