PH06: One is the Loneliest Number!

Yep my save is 1100ad Pholk and see that Wang is offering us Music there.

PS: we swapped. (not wives though)

Okay, so i fired up this game after my ignominous blunder in RotQM3 and was looking for a little payback on the AI. I called up Wang just to double-check:
civ4screenshot0000zt8.jpg

Okay, yup, no vassalage ~ let's rememdy that, then, shall we?

AFter 3 turns of bombardment, the defenses were nill. I softened up the 2 longbows w/2 sacrifice Praets, and then I sent in our generals, both of which won. After that, i used up every unit, but in the end, we prevailed:

Now, Wang's a little more agreeable ~
civ4screenshot0005xu2.jpg

From there, i focused mostly on libraries, forums and theatres in our cities. I also started the Heroic Epic in . . . Antium, maybe?? Whichever city had the 2nd most production.

I also see here that we've lost a connection to the outside world for Rome:
civ4screenshot0008zd1.jpg

This will be a problem once we declare on Asoka/Vicky, but could be easily remedied of course.

Wang offers a modest proposal:

I accept and offer one of my own:
civ4screenshot0011ph1.jpg

Apparently, that doesn't make everybody happy:

So it looks like another war's a-brewin'. Here's the power list for consideration:
civ4screenshot0019ii5.jpg

I'd like to take out India next, but it looks like Izzy's might come after us first. What i didn't check was if they were still at war w/Cathy ~

So they will capitulate even if war is started before Feudalism. mmmmmm
According to another SG they had trouble with that. Ok thing I don't like though is that our vassal is really weak and a target meaning it might just may drag us into a war we might not want. Let's say Cathy gets ideas and declares on Wang then we have to engage as well. I find vassals can be tricky and if your vassal is extremely weak he might as well have a bullseye on his forehead.

As to Rome being disconnected isn't sailing keeping us connected and any city on the shore connected to the trade network keeps us connected. A lot of connected and no "Soprano' family. That's just an attempt at humour.

That's how I see the "connected" part but correct me if I am wrong since I'm sure someone will. Ok as to your battle techniques pholk I am confused. Would itn't be better to waste siege units then fine soldiers. I notice you say soften up with Praets but I personally soften up with siege units. I realize you are going after the strongest defenders so the rest can do an easy capture but siege units work pretty good too and cats are cheaper to build. Now you may have done that but not mentioned it and still needed to use praets then disregard my point.

huh ~ i've never had a problem w/AIs capitulating, even if the war was started before Feudal or maybe i've just never noticed . . . .

re: connected ~ i meant, via road, not connected in the sense of the trade network; sorry to confuse

re: preats ~ i usually use the sieges as well, but they had just bombarded the city down to 0%, and Pyongyang only had 4 units ~ i didn't think i'd need more than 2 suicides. Sure, it's not teh Standard Operating Procedure, but after they suicided on the two longbows, i didn't want to wait for the next turn when the Longbows would've been CGII along with first strike.

i also have been having lousy luck w/AIs vassalizing to someone else like 1 turn before i want to get them to capitualate, so i wanted it done fast!

I hear ya....
You were seeking expedience here and of course waiting another turn with the cats with new AI may have allowed more units to get there so I see your methodology there. That has happened to me too with vassals so sooner is better wise decision. We should however endeavour to keep a strong military in the event we get dragged into war. Although the plan is of course to keep going on our own and that Asoka is one annoying character much like his friend Gandhi.

Eh, pisan. You crack me up.

In the other SG (BMV), we had trouble if we had a prior war when capitulation isn't available. In this case, the war is still on going. So, there is no contradiction in the observed empirical data.

Having said that, I probably need a little more time than usual to complete my turns, considering I'm up for RotQM also.

There's an SG idea in there somewhere...i can smell it.

Just here to say i'll need skips in all SG to atleast next week Tuesday (28 November).
I'm just too buzy with real life and studies now, i'm sorry you guys need to miss me.

SG aye ok who's the boss and the lieutenants. All we need is a waste disposal business.

Furrie understandable RL/studies have more priorty.

Furrie, no problem ~ let us know when you're back and we can slot you back in! :goodjob:

okay, so as we're waiting for Fox, the "This Thing of Ours" SG would need to have something to do w/vassalage, as in, we need to vassalize everybody or something. We also may need to control all of one particular resource or trade with everybody or something . . . . just something to wet our beak a little . ..

edit: btw, i think i'm going to make this PH07

Please forgive the rude interruption by the lurking public. You could make it ROTQM05: Roman Organization: The Quintessential Mafia. If you can get Rex to let you have the acronym back, that is. ;)

Rules proposal: You are running the local Organization, and everybody's business is your business. Your rules for your 'associates' (all other civs) are quite reasonable, really:
  1. Their door is always open to you (Open Borders whenever you want it)
  2. You always get a cut (the civ must supply you with a free resource or free gpt).
  3. They don't make demands. YOU make demands.
Anyone who abides by the rules gets your protection (you must declare on anyone who declares on them). If they forget, well, you need to send Vinnie and Guido to have a little 'chat' with them. Anyone who declares on you must be an object lesson to others - you have to wipe 'em out. No peace at any price.

Essentially, you treat EVERYONE as if they are already a vassal. If they let you, fine. If not, send the enforcers to make 'em one. Civs must comply as soon as you can send ground troops to their capital (so overseas civs get a pass 'til Astronomy).

Sorry guys, for taking so long ... but CFC was down last night after I played ... at least I keep getting timeout for like an hour .... but of-course I wrote the report offline, and here it s, just a cut-n-paste, I can do that before I hit off to work (yeah, no thanksgiving here, no nothing ... apparently Singaporeans express their appreciation of the givings by working harder ... ;))

I decided to play this first, and play RotQM03 later tonight, since RotQM03 has lots of people unavailable anyway.

A most boring turnset. Mostly infrastructure builds, with one or two military thrown into the mix.

One grumpy comment is: What in hell's name are we doing confused when Judaism is clearly the majority in our empire????

This cost me 2 turns of anarchy: 1 for religion switch, 1 for OR. I started spreading Judaism a little, and at the end, there is only 2 cities yet to be Jewish.

Some highlights:

You don't often see HC lower than us in power:

I finally settled the city pholk marked so so long ago ....

lonely-AD1214-pisae.jpg

As a monument of our loneliness. we got ourselves a lonely statue:

lonely-AD1220-colossus.jpg

I didn't know tat capitulated civ can do that without turning it into a war:

lonely-AD1244-Wang.jpg

I have not yet started the palace, I still think New Athens is the better choice. But I have a feeling I am the minority hre, so I leave it to the next player. Here are, however, the city screen of Sparta and New Athens for discussion:

>>> The Lonely Save <<<

Just a quick report because nothing happened. I changed some builds to units because we need to go to war asap, I'd take on Asoka/Eli. After Printing Press was done I traded it around for Optics, Guilds and Education and starting researching Gunpowder. In the end a GS was born in Rome and I built an academy there, it's still the strongest science city and working on a university. It will drop after its palace and the bureaucracy bonus is gone, but still the best option.

These units were brought into Sparta in my turnset (some more on the way):

I think switching to vassalage and building up and army might be better after New Athens becomes our capitol. I also made some signs with some suggestions for the next player.

Double check this but I think it's the current situation:

Fox > just played
Furrie > skipped
Karr > just played
Cosmic > UP
Frank > on deck
Pholk >

Maybe it's a little obscure, but could PH07 be named "Going to the Mattresses?" (from a line in Goodfellows)

Goodfellas now that was a movie I can see again and again and again. I like the cut of your jib Frank. Oh I am up so this is "I got it" and will get to it today or early tomorrow.

Geeze, I try to be careful and keep it out of sight.
