Inherited turn (1364 AD): First of all, any humor you find in this post is purely accidental. I figured Cosmichail was too tough an act to follow so I planned to just do it straight. heh heh heh
I bumped up research from 70% to 90% and cut one turn off Chemistry, mainly because I just love Grenadiers. With 239 gold in the bank and a deficit of 36g/turn, it's a substainable rate until the research is complete.
Next I toured our cities to look for any opportunities to micromanage. There was a sign at New Athens, our new capital, about building a Harbor there and indeed, New Athens had 2 turns remaining on the Harbor. I could whip it but this city needs a lot of growing to reach its potential. And at size 8, it had only 2 excess food and it has a happiness cap of 18. I think it'll also need a Lighthouse to get more food out of the fishing net on the lake there. Corninth also had a sign and was also building a harbor. It would cost four population to whip it but it had only just begun work. I would return next turn to see what it looked like then. Sparta was building a Harbor too, but without a sign! I immediately added the sign. Same with P'yonyang. I didn't see anything to change but noted that we were only building 2 military units at the time -- a Knight (in compliance with its sign dictating that we "build Knights here") and a Trebuchet at Neapolis. I didn't think they'd be enough to take Karachi, that annoying intruder city Gandhi built north of Rome. I would soon focus on building more military as soon as all these darned harbors were completed.
Turn 1 (1370 AD): Rome constructed a Courthouse which immediately heard a case involving sign painters suing the city for lack of signage in Rome. Meanwhile, the city began training a Maceman(4). Cumae trained a Knight, started another(4). I sent the Knight to set up near Karachi. Seoul constructed a Lighthouse which really helped sailors read the signs there. It began construction of a Forge(25). P'yongyang constructed a Harbor and I tore down the sign there. It started training a Maceman(7). Pisae constructed a Forge, started a Barracks(7).
Man, you cannot leave a single tile available to this Gandhi guy.
Here's another spot we'll have to have covered before we decare. At least we have an army nearby this one.
Turn 2 (1376 AD): Neapolis trained a Trebuchet, started another. I sent the rock throwers to join the Knight near Karachi. New Athens constructed a Harbor, lost its sign and started a Lighthouse(2). I sent the Harbor to ... wait, you can't wage war with Harbors? WTH?
. . .
Turn 4 (1388 AD):
I dropped research to 80%. Now we're making +1 gold per turn! Wow, those Harbors really do work! Brilliant! Replaceable Parts was due in 10 turns.
New Athens constructed a Lighthouse, started a Grenadier(6). I upgraded Hamilcar to a Grenadier -- for free! I took one of the Longbowmen from Sparta to garrison P'yongyang and yanked General Yayayarman II out of there and sent him to lead a portion of Sparta's army against Lahore. I figured by the time one more Knight arrived at Karachi, we'd be ready to decare on Asoka/Victoria and be in good shape to take three Indian cities within 2 turns. The English have a city north of Rome too, but our force that would take Karachi could move on towards there. We were really light on forces in the east so there was a risk in declaring but I thought we could handle it with some whipping if necessary. For that reason, I laid off the whip.
IBT: Asoka adopted Police State.
Turn 5 (1394 AD): Rome trained a Maceman who went north to Karachi and started work on a Trebuchet. Cumae trained a Knight who went east to Karachi, started another(4). Sparta completed a Harbor, lost its sign and started a Grenadier.
Dang, Asoka had just trained a Knight at Karachi. We had better keep an eye on where he goes. He could nab one of our core cities.
IBT: Victoria demanded we stop trading with Catherine. And what's in it for me? Nothing you got, lady.
Turn 6 (1400 AD): Pisae constructed a Barracks, started a Pikeman(9) because I had that Indian Knight in mind.
Turn 7 (1406 AD): I dialed up Asoka:
Yikes, look what got transported out of our territory and right next to our workers at Pisae:
I scanned the map and found this outside Sparta:
Other than an English Trireme that got dumped outside Rome, I don't see any more unpleasant surprises. I sent our two Triremes outside P'yongyang to try to preserve some of our fishing nets back east but it would take them a long time to get near Rome. Well, that didn't go so well.
In the east, I moved 2 knights, a trebuchet and Maceman adjacent to Karachi which was garrisoned by a Longbowman and Pikeman.
In the west, I split our force sending a third south to Kolhapur and 2/3 north to Lahore.
BTW, our Caravel completed a cirumnavigation this turn. I have no clue if we're the first or not but hey, it was worth a try. (It turned out we didn't get the benefit.)
IBT: Bad news:
Great, Russians are pouring over the border near P'yongyang. We lost a worker. I had checked Catherine just a few turns ago and she was pleased with us. Asoka/Vicky must have bribed her.
Also, Asoka's Knight abandoned Karachi and headed toward Cumae to pillage, inspiring me to whip the Pikeman in Pisae first chance I got.
Also, also, Isabella/Hannibal decared war on Alexander/Wang Kon. (seriously, that's what the game said, even though Alex is dead.) Oh well, there goes our Vassal. He won't last long with only one city. That leaves Hatty/Huayana as the only couple not at war.
Turn 8 (1412 AD): P'yongyang trained a Maceman, started a Musketman. There's only a Rusian Crossbowman and a Catapult visible now but I'd feel better with a strong garrison until we can get reinforcements.
At Karachi, I figured we didn't have the time to bombard the defenses with only one Trebuchet so I gave it a CRI promotion and sent it in against a Longbowman at 20% odds. It did pretty well, knocking the Longbowman down to 2.9 health before dying. The pikeman there posed a problem -- our knights could only get 25% odds with him at 5.5 health. And our Maceman can't touch him because he wanted to fight the longbowman. The Maceman killed the Longbow, then I sent in the first knight and he wounded the Pikeman. The second one killed the Pikeman and took the city. It's in a horrible spot one tile off the coast. I guess Asoka wanted it for the Incense that is burning out in the desert. Is that pathetic or what? I razed the city, pocketing the 128 gold we pillaged. The knight then moved to cover the wounded maceman who is highly vulnerable to that Indian Crossbowman nearby.
At Lahore, something weird happend and I can't explain it. Look at the screenshot above that showed Vicky's settler/escorts outside of Lahore. Hamilcar's force was on the desert tile south of the city. This turn, they were somehow transported to the farmland south of the lake, now facing a stack from Hannibal that must have been headed to Sparta.
I called off the attack on Lahore and climbed the hill there to take a stand, hoping Hannibal attacks them and not move on to Sparta. Hamilcar's force is large but it's mostly city raiders, not open-field fighters.
At Kolhapur, two catapults and a Trebuchet knocked the defenses down from 20% to 9%
IBT: This cracked me up. That Crossbow/Longbow/Settler combination settled Hyderabad on the ruins of Karachi. Oh well, we'll have to do it over again.
Turn 9 (1418 AD): Cumae trained a Knight, started another(3). Pisae trained a Pikeman, started a Musketman(41). It's only size 2 now but it will grow fast. That pikeman was an expensive whip but he came in handy, killing the Knight that had just pillaged our horse pasture outside of Cumae. But our workers were now safe to quickly rebuild it.
At Hyderabad, I pulled our Knight/Maceman pair back inside our cultural border to heal.
At Lahore, Hannibal's force split with half moving west and half moving east of our stack on the hill. I moved our stack south to maintain contact with both and putting them on a road. Mobility will be helpful here in the next few turns.
IBT: Hannibal's force hit our stack hard, killing Hamilcar, another maceman and two catapults who died protecting our wounded Praetorians.
Turn 10 (1424 AD): Rome completed a Terebuchet, started a Grenadier. Neapolis completed a Trebuchet, started a Grenadier(9). New Athens trained a Grenadier, started a Musketman(4).
Asoka sent a pair of Knights towards Corinth. I switched production from the Harbor (although, the sign is still there) to a Musketman. He can be whipped next turn if necessary. I also sent the Grenadier trained in New Athens north to meet the threat.
In the far west, the threat is ended for now -- Isabella seems intent on taking out Wang before turning her attention south toward P'yongyang and Seoul. I gave Engineering to Wang -- maybe he can kill a few of her Cossacks before going down. He does have a large force of highly promoted Longbowmen there but they won't last long against Cossacks.
Hannibal has chased our once-mighty Praetorians into Sparta to lick their wounds. I'd consider slowing down research to get some cash to upgrade them. But there's not much we can do -- City Raider Grenadiers make for lousy Garrisons against melee units. General Jay Jr. is heading north from Kolhapur -- his healing powers will come in handy in Sparta.
In the east, two knights just arrived from Cumae put an end to the nonsense, razing Hyderabad, netting 3 gold for their trouble. When that force is healed, they can go clean out the English slime from that end of the continent.
I think declaring on Asoka may have been a smoke move, but who knew? Things are grim but once we get our production geared up we'll recover and turn the tide. We've taken 2 cities from Asoka along with the happiness resources they controlled. We knocked him and Vicky out of first place in the score if that means anything.
I'm handing over a mess. Cut a switch. Frankcor's going to the woodshed.
Here's
The Save.
