PH06: One is the Loneliest Number!

I played a 10-turn builder set.

Inherited turn (1890 AD): I took a tour through our cities and the only change I made was to switch Antium (on our north coast) from building wealth to a Work Boat.

I see our next task will be to break up the Isabella/Hannibal couple. That's going to be tough because, once again, they're on opposite ends of the continent from us. But I'll spend 10 turns trying to grow our cities, grow our economy, research bombers and build up some kind of army. Piece of cake.

IBT: Herodotus wrote a book:

Hey, he thinks we're fine. I wonder ... naaaah.

Turn 1 (1891 AD): Kolhapur trained a Machine Gun, started a Work Boat(3). The Machine Gun reported for garrison duty in P'yongyang on the Russian border. Seoul trained a Destoyer, started a Work Boat(3). Neapolis trained a Work Boat, started another(1).

Hannibal had made things easier for us by settling next door to Madras:

I just wished he didn't have to bring along Mechanized infantry.

Our great merchant arrived in Moscow. I considered sending him on to Madrid or Thebes but Moscow is larger than either of those capitals. So I took the 2550 in gold.

I made the following trades:
Gifted Gold to Victoria (she needs to chill)
Crab for 6:gold:/turn from Hannibal.
Corn and Pig for Fish and 14:gold:/turn from Isabella.
Crab for 1:gold:/turn from Saladin
Gems for 18:gold:/turn from Catherine

The trades allowed us to bump research to 80% with -10/turn.

No one would sell us a technology for our gold (3618). I was trying to buy Biology to help our cities grow.

IBT: Catherine asked us to switch to Hereditery Rule. She was +8 pleased with us so I crossed my fingers and declined. That knocked 2 off her pleasure with us. (gulp)

Turn 2 (1892 AD): We discovered Flight, and started Radio(13).

Pisae trained a Battleship, started a Fighter(4). Lahore constructed a Forge, started a Worker(5). Chittagon trained a Tank, started a Fighter(4).

Saladin had a stack of 4 Mechanized Infantry and a Settler in our territory. I wagered he was heading here:

That corner of our empire was about to get crowded again. There was no way to train a settler in time to stop that.

I upgraded our Cavalry to Gunships, spending about half our cash.

Turn 3 (1893 AD): Cumae trained a Gunship, started a Settler(2) (just in case) New Athens trained a Marine, started a Fighter(2).

I cranked research to 100%. With our remaining cash (2196 @-192:gold:/turn) that was a substainable rate. Radio was due in 10 turns.

Turn 4 (1894 AD): Rome trained a Battleship, started an Infantry(3). Sparta trained a SAM Infantry, started a Fighter(3). Kolhapur trained a Work Boat, started a Library(6).

IBT: Catherine/Saladin declared war on Hatshepsut/Huayna Capac (whew!)

Turn 5 (1895 AD): Cumae trained a Settler, started a Tank(3). New Athens trained a Fighter, started a Bank(5). P'yongyang trained a Work Boat, (that was enough to repair all our fishing nets) started a Fighter(6). Delhi constructed a Library, started a Fighter(7).

Our forces in Madras have healed but I decided not to declare on Hannibal. We need more Tanks and Marines. before starting that trek.

Our settler founded Arretium and our corner is secure from intruder settlers. Until it gets razed by another landing force, that is. It started workon a Theatre(38).

IBT: Isabella demanded 370 gold from us. She went from +1 to +0 Cautious with us. Lump it, lady. Antium trained a Work Boat, went back to building wealth. With food, that city might amount to something someday. Pisae trained a Fighter, started a Tank(6). Chittagong trained a Fighter, started an Infantry(6).

Well, I found another :smoke: on my part -- Ravenna was already training a settler. I canceled him and the city went back to work on an Artillery.

Turn 6 (1896 AD):

Turn 7 (1774 AD): Rome trained an Infantry (for Arretium's garrison), started a Battleship(3). Sparta trained a Fighter, started a Forum(6).

IBT: Catherine captured Giza from Hatty.

Turn 8 (1776 AD): Cumae trained a Tank, started another(3). Neapolis trained a Battleship, started a Fighter(4).

IBT: Our peace treaty with Victoria expired, costing us 6 :gold:/turn.

Turn 9 (1778 AD): Madras trained an Artillery, started a Library(4).

Turn 10 (1780 AD): New Athens constructed a Bank, started Fighter(2). Kolhapur constructed a Library, started a Bank(23). Lahore trained a Fighter, started a Bank(15).

I made progress on all our goals but it doesn't feel like I accomplished anything. We have enough force now to start bringing it to Isabella & Hannibal. Hannibal now has two cities west of Madras that we should take easily but I dread the trek across the continent to take on his other cities.

Should we hold off on Izzy/Hannibal and wait for Catherine to ask us to join in a dogpile on Hatty/Saladin instead? I'll bet she asks within a turn or two.

Our economy is cooking and getting better. Radio is due in 2 turns. I suggest we go for Biology next to improve the economy even more.

Here's The Save: His_Loneliness_AD-1900.CivWarlordsSave Have fun!

Wouldn't it be great if you could offer to declare war and try to get them to present you w/something in return as w/techs?? ahh well ~ nice playing frank ~ i see this, but realized today that i've been AWOL in my other games, so this will have to wait.

Perhaps Fox will swap w/me in the interest of keeping this game moving since we're so close to the end.

You're right, pholkhero. That's one feature that seems to be missing from the game -- the ability to offer to declare war on an AI in a trade.

I think we can expect Catherine to be giving us a ring in a turn or two. The most attractive part of that offer would be that we could help her eliminate Hatty but we wouldn't be expanding our borders to the domination limit.

Domination limit??? Fat hope. Cathy+Sally is way ahead of us in that regard.

Should have revolted to HR when cathy asked ... Rep really isn't worth it at this stage.

How long will the wait be, pholky? If it is anything more than 3 days, we can swap.

Curious ... how did you manage that time-traveling trick?

 who is team 2 and who is team 4?

Oops, typo -- I write a manual log but keep the auto log as a back up. I'm impressed that you're reading that carefully. It inspires me to write gooder ;)

No clue on the team numbers. I was also getting screen messages through my turnset like "has 6 gold/turn to trade" with no leader names in front of them.

phucking ruff ~ can't he make a log that works ~

fox ~ you see that i've got the snaga game to play too, so won't be able to get to this until friday at the earliest, so, please take it (but don't play right away!!)

Team 2 is Vicky I believe becoming vassal to her mighty Cathy definitely the Great and hot. By the time we get to Mechs they will be hitting us with MA. Again although we are making progress I am beginning to believe we missed a few things along the way. mmmmmmm Science???? Where are the universities/observatories in the most important cities. (no oxford) We up against teams and expect to keep up without putting any kind of work into improving science. It's hard to believe this is "prince". We don't have enough military cities and Cumae simply isn't enough. (no west point) Our finances need improving and that darned RNG in Rome keeps giving us otherwise. SHeeeezzzz....The GP would have been a real lift for us.

Hey guys maybe we can marry Hatty and go down like Toshi.

The best offense I have found against Mechs is softening them up with bombers and attacking with tanks. Since Mechs are gunpowder units like infantry the pinch promotion on tanks will help. Gunships simply can't even take out a somewhat damaged Mech but have no problem with a badly damaged one but neither would an archer. Gunships prove their worth against MA/tanks but AI is smarter and stacks mechs with their tanks/MA which defeats that plan. Again bombers aren't always positioned right and need 1 turn to get into range. If you have 10-20 bombers (cheap to build) you can anticipate the attack vector and place one there and another secondary target/defense point.

I almost was thinking that Fibre optics would be good for Internet and grab their techs since each team has the same techs. mmmm

Have fun Fox

I don't think Vicky capitulated to Cathy ... from the attitude changes, I suspect it is Izzy/Hannibal that vicky'd capitulated to.

I haven't had much experience with war against mech inf ... my games tend to end way before they appear  But I am used to fighting war against superior troops (eg: grenies + cannons vs infantries + arty) so I am not too concern there.

Re: the GP in Rome ... yes, bad RNG roll may have something to do with it, but everytime I inherited the save (I haven't looked at this one), every time I see Rome working on the mined hills and the number of priest specialist reduce to 1 instead of the maximum capacity of 4. So, our lack of perservation and specialization has something to do with it too.

But I agree with you, cosmic ... not focusing on researching early game is our biggest mistake. If this has not been prince, Cathy+Sally would have launched way before we can see us producing tanks of our own .... ... hey, why are we doing a post-mortem when His Loneliness is still alive and kicking?

Will play this in the next 30 hrs ... hopefully that's enough leeway for our beloved pholky.

I looked at the save and it's the wrong one. That's the save I put up after I goofed putting up 1880. So you're right Fox Vicky didn't vassal to anyone in this save LOL. We need the save from 1900 Frank and your clock is definitely out going from 1896 to 1780??

We aren't finished yet I just was making some observations about observatories/universities. We can definitely take on Izzy but what concerns me somewhat is that Izzy and Cathy buds. Frank is right though Cathy will likely ask us to join against Hatty.

If we have a sh*tload of tanks/bombers we can go against mechs easily enough and some gunships for when they build MA. Fox in some of my games I don't make it that far either but sometimes I enjoy modern warfare so much I just drag it out so I can fight with tanks/mechs/MA/gunships/Stealth bombers since it takes a lot more strategy to fight with modern army than ancient/medieval.

You will need the correct save too Fox before you start as the first thing I noticed was the GM heading for Moscow. He's still there and according to Frank's report should have cashed out.

Sorry, this game took longer then I estimated ....

anyway, check this out:

Right, vicky capitulated to Izzy as I suspected, which makes things a bit difficult if we intend to go after Izzy -- we will have to take on 3 civs.

Fortunately, cathy is neither please nor friendly with Izzy:

Contrary to our expectation, Hatty gave us a ring first.

You must be kidding ...

Then, along came cathy ...

I decided to push our luck a bit and reject for now ... we are not ready yet.

However, it seems someone else is ready ...

Okay, save us the trouble. I immediately razed 2 cities off the threesome:

And one of the northern Hannibal city ...

Then, it is Izzy's turn. A very respectable stack ...

but they were decimated 2 turns later. I have also repelled vicky's destroyers ... and then Izzy and Hannibal made one landing each at Madras ... I pulled our forces which I intent to send into vicky's land and repelled the landing party as well.

A general is borned, and I merged him to our capital.

Although I had repelled our their incursions, I have depleted our attacking troops as well. I seriously don't see how we can bring forces to Spain ... I suggest we raze some more english cities before attempting to bring the battle to Hannibal.

However, I hope we have the time ...

>>> The Save (1911AD) <<<

Accidentally pressed enter ... thus I played one more turn.

Hope you built lots of bombers......

Good thing you didn't give into Cathy otherwise we'd really be screwed and her as our only friend. (take the r and then what do you get?)

Hey Fox I think you missed a buck somewhere LOL.....

Nice razing those cities. I would love to just get to Izzy enough to have her leave us alone. I was thinking of continuing on Vicky and get her to capitulate but our forces were getting thin and our moola isn't that hot either. But hey we lonely and eat a lot of kraft dinners whilst the others are having steak dinners as couples well, except for Vicky now and I imagine she ate alone even so. (that face could melt the chrome off a hitch)

Not a lot but a few bombers. We don't have that much production power in the non-core cities, and the core-cities are simply pumping out tanks / infantries / artillery.

But I think I have taken the main blunt of Izzy's forces ... once the current batch of troops finishes, I suspect pholky can start marching thenm into the English cities. May want to keep some this time, we don't want to create more spaces for Sally+Cathy (they practically have settlers parked in out cities waiting for us to create a space for them!), plus the air raid units need a base.

PFFFT that's what Frank said and when he headed into Russia kept coming across more and more armies. Same happen to Pholk as well.
