PH06: One is the Loneliest Number!

Me think Pholky has went MIA ... hope everything is fine with him and it is just his internet access having problem due to the freak snow storm hitting the west coast.

This game is close to finishing (Cathy won't take too long to complete the remaining 3 parts), so let's skip our beloved lonely leader ... Next player is UP (think it should be Cosmic).

Sorry guys but I can't play until Monday because of a very busy weekend. If anybody else wants to take it go for it.

Wow out of those six players that started we are down to three and as usual Greyfox is the steady flame that keeps burning. I will pick this up Monday and post.

Well it looks like the lonely guy managed to subdue Isabella and Hannibal. Only some battleships annoying us especially the one at Rome. We have three destroyers protecting our crab at Rome and Isabella’s battleship attacks and takes out one of them. After looking her battleship doesn’t even take a bit of a hit and is at full strength. So no counterattack. Start to move a battleship/destroyer from Seoul to intercept but in the meantime she proves to be a considerable pain with that one battleship.

I continue mostly with military builds such as gunships/artillery/tanks and my favourite bombers. Bombers are great for weakening battleships on your coast however none were in the vicinity and mostly near the battlefront. I did move a bomber back to Pisae to damage that battleship pestering us. The same battleship manages to take out another destroyer and still can’t counterattack as she promoted it to combat III and down to 30 strength which made the odds for destroyer too much in her favour. The bomber and battleship will be available in the next turn and do manage to remove that ship once and for all. Unfortunately she takes out the third destroyer which was somewhat injured and smoked on not moving it into Rome.

Battlefront

Since General Greyfox took out most of the advancing forces it is now time to advance ourselves. We still have a decent army to assemble and head after the Carthaginian city and proceed to Coventry as well. We gather enough forces to begin our assault on the English and to quiet her once and for all.

1914

With some ease we take Sabratha only loosing one artillery in the process. (which won’t be an issue once we gather enough bombers in the area to remove defenses and weaken defenders.)

Civ4ScreenShot0339.jpg

1915

With the aid of bombers we take out the defenses at Coventry, weaken defenders and take it with the loss of two tanks. ARGH both were at 90% odds. Nonetheless we keep pounding the English and scout out London for our next attack and see that Izzy has some tanks and infantry there as well as a settler. Boy the AI just loves to find that open spot and settle.

Civ4ScreenShot0340.jpg

We are experiencing WW big time and feel that fission is a smoke but went with it for now until I realized it’s better to have fascism for Mt. Rushmore to quiet our citizens somewhat. Eventually I do switch but try to get it from our so-called friends who are pressed too hard.

Catherine proposes this deal and gladly accept:

Civ4ScreenShot0341.jpg

1919

We scout out London again and see that Isabella forces disappeared? Good enough it aids to take London fairly easily without any losses this time. We are gathering a nice force of bombers and removed the defenses/weakened defenders with the bombers. Artillery is so useless at this point on the advance since they move too slow.

Vicky does go to the trouble of landing some troops next to Sabratha which are taken out after taking London.

Civ4ScreenShot0342.jpg

We do see Izzy’s forces south of London and looked like she was heading for Pyongyang but turned back to rescue her vassal. We use the bombers to weaken those puppies and take them all out. Here’s a bit of good news though:

Civ4ScreenShot0343.jpg

This is where Izzy had her forces which are no longer.

Civ4ScreenShot0344.jpg

1922

We continue to hammer England but good and now take Warwick again with no losses. We did loose a bomber.

Civ4ScreenShot0345.jpg

We check with Vicky to see what she has to offer and she offers this:

Civ4ScreenShot0346.jpg

I decide that we should get her off the mainland and leave her with that island and having only two turns left on Fascism feel it’s an empty deal.

Civ4ScreenShot0347.jpg

This is all she has left in Canterbury so taking it will help us use it for launching a naval campaign against Hannibal if we can get some battleships/destroyers and transports there. The land route is just too long and we will be subjected to Isabella’s forces should we go that route.

1924

Canterbury falls and Vicky is off the mainland left on island to go haunt somebody else.

Civ4ScreenShot0348.jpg

Check with Vicky and she offers this deal. I try to get Communism but she won’t give any tech and feel we need to deal with WW so accept the capitulation and hope she uses all those ships to annoy Isabella.

Civ4ScreenShot0349.jpg

The majority of our forces are sitting in Warwick and we need to see how we are going to attack Hannibal. I would prefer a naval landing since that would make our troops less vulnerable to attacks from Isabella on the way to Hannibal’s cities. In addition there are forces gathering at Dacca which can join whatever forces we choose to move out to Carthage. Be careful about declaring on Hatty/HC as we have a lot of deals with them and some are luxury items which would be costly to us. So joining Cathy is this war is not wise and should continue to go after Izzy/Hannibal. Hannibal isn’t that big and should be easy to subdue but traversing through Russia/Arabia isn’t the best way and again a naval landing would be much better. We have some naval forces and would only need transports. Getting some ships to the former England would help us get rid of the ships from Hannibal/Izzy. Vicky did take out some of their ships but seems now to have exhausted what she has. When we took Canterbury she lost two battleships and two transports as well.

Cathy hasn’t built anything else and this is the status so far:

Civ4ScreenShot0351.jpg

There is no reason why we should give into her finishing it and I wish hadn’t started fission as communism would be better to get the spies and slow her down. Although we simply don’t have the economy to do anything about it. But even having state property would be much better. Again I went along with Fission because that’s what Greyfox left there but imo not the best choice since we could use fascism/communism much better right now. We do have Fascism and Mt. Rushmore has been started which will be done in 12 turns. The picture didn’t take for Fascism although we all know what it looks like.

So it’s just the three stooges now, Frankcor/Cosmic/Greyfox. I referred to Greyfox as the steady flame as in a lot of games he’s there until the bitter end. SGOTM02 is a great example.

I did play 15 turns since there are only three of us left and wanted to finish off England so that the next player could focus on Izzy/Hannibal.

Good luck Frank.

Great progress, cosmic. Maybe u r right about Fascism and communism (we still don't have that???) ... but someone suggested Internet ... which is why I go Fission. Speaking of which, does Cathy and Sally count as 1 civ knowing a tech or 2 civ knowing a tech, as far as the Internet is concerned?

Well ... if we got the Internet, not only do we know Facism and Communism, we could then funnel all funds to gold for possible Operation Nikita.

You're right I did suggest Internet. I don't understand Fission though. Isn't the prerequisite for Fibre Optics computers/satellites. We badly need Mt.rushmore/state property and we can't let Cathy get any more land either. (ergo needing state property to deal with main)
She is only 10% away from domination.

Fission is almost done only 5 turns left. We really need Mt. Rushmore badly and soon will be done. The vassal helps too with happy and we can now run at 10% culture. Just a matter of going after Izzy/Hannibal now.

Trading for Communism won't be available since the AI already has Fission. I would like to see what Cathy is doing and spies would be great. Internet is a long ways off (needing computer/satellites/fibre optics and then building it) Probably some 50 turns away. Unless we find a way to speed up science. Maybe forget about the GP in Rome and put scientists there.

Should we consider building Apollo just in case. Cathy does have fission and imagine she is onto fusion already so I think she will beat us before we even get to internet. Any ideas. Maybe research communism manually and build spy agency and see what we can do. If we deal with Izzy Hannibal effectively enough maybe we will have enough forces to consider going after Cathy. Again we are trading heavy with her and war would be costly. Since she is going to take it no matter maybe consider that in a combined effort with Hatty/HC.

After double checking Greyfox it's computers and/or plastics-satellites. No worries mate. I DO think we need to take on Catherine if we want to actually win this one. Hatty/HC are her vassal now too I noticed which is not good.

If we're going to declare on Cathy, it will have to be now, right?

I'm up in a couple other SGs so it may be a few days before I can pick this one up. I'm confused about what technology we need next -- or do we need all of them next ;)

There's 5 turns left on Fission and (yes I am still kicking myself for not changing it to computers at the start). I would say after that maybe communism to get spies and state property. In addition Frank I think Cathy may have modern armour soon so we should get lots of gunships too. At this point Isabella/Hannibal aren't much of a threat and we need to break the back of the pretty Russian if we can. She isn't far from taking it and our only hope is to take her on. Hatty/Hc are vassals now but are severely weakened and won't offer much of a threat.

Suggested tech path:
Finish Fission (already beakers invested)
communism
computers->plastics or satellites to get to Fibre Optics.

The last one computers -plastics is maybe not the best since it's a ways off before we can even consider building internet. I would say better to beeline to robotics for mechs. Mechs/tanks/gunships/artillery/bombers are a great combination and will allow us to deal with Modern armour much better.

When I look at the techs it will be some 50 turns before we can even get to the internet since our science is very weak. Vicky has plastics/communism and is our vassal so maybe you can sweeten her up to help us out but she has a lot of negatives for that city razing campaign.

Good luck Frank you will need it......(another steady flame that keeps burning)

Greyfox don't worry about the fission screw up I should have corrected that but assumed you had a reason for it and never realized it was FO. I must admit I racked my brain for 20 mins over it and thought ok maybe he wants nukes. Sorry about that....

I would hold off declaring on Cathy until we feel we are ready for her. Let's make peace with Izzy/Hannibal and build up our forces on Cathy's border.

Sounds like a good plan, Cosmichail. Maybe we can entice Cathy into declaring on Isabella? Maybe give her a few turns and then stab her in that pretty little ... er ... stay focused, frankcor.

Ok guys this game is going nowhere. It's been a week since the last play and I am losing interest fast. There is a remote possibility that we can win it but at this pace and only three players I am inclined to let it go. SO unless someone posts a turnset soon I don't see the need to continue.

I admit I struggled with this turn-set. I felt like I was playing way over my abilities -- Catherine has simply too much power.

Knowing that we have to war with her (and her 3 minions), part of my struggle involved whether we should start that war immediately or not. Attacking her now would mean certain eilimination in just a very few turns. But by looking at the demographics screen and charts, she has twice the power we have and she's growing faster than we are. Her production capability is larger than ours and it looks to be growing faster than ours. So delaying a declaration won't mean it will be better for us.

So I put off the decision and played a 10-turn builder's set. I rang up Isabella and asked for the price of peace:
one54.jpg

I took a look at our cities and we have virtually no war weariness at the moment. The current war with Spain/Carthage isn't hurting us too bad so I refused the deal. We can use the war for a few more turns to give our veteran units more experience. Quality units are going to be crucial when we go against Catherine.

I hired an additonal priest in Rome to improve on these odds:
one55.jpg

Production: mostly Gunships, Infantry, Tanks and Bombers. I started Ironworks in New Athens, our top hammer city.

Research: Fission --> Communism

In 1927, we eliminated a stack of 4 Cartaginian units unloaded by transport at Sabratha on our northern frontier. We also sank a battleship on our northeastern shores. All this mayhem was aided by our bombers.

A second short stack of Cartaginians got wiped out in 1929.

In 1930, we razed Utica, losing an Artillery and a Gunship. With no city in which to heal, our force in Carthage was a little beat up (from air and artillery attacks) and quite exposed. With losses, War Weariness was begining to erode our GNP so I made a peace deal with Isabella, getting the same deal shown above. I broke up our exeditionary force and gave orders for them to spread out evenly amoung our cities that border with Russia. That same year, Shah Jahan, a Great Merchant was born in Rome (sigh). I sent him on a trade mission to Moscow with an Infantry escort. I didn't want to lose another Great Merchant in this game. He earned 2850 :gold: for us.

Wonders: Cathrine built Eiffel Tower, Hollywood and Space Elevator.

Perhaps we won't lose by being overwhelmed by AI military after all:
one57.jpg

Catherine won't go to war for what we have to offer:
one56.jpg

As I pass this on to GreyFox, I think to myself: "Cathy, my dear, you have no idea what a handful you're gonna get."

Good luck, GreyFox; git 'er done! His_Loneliness_AD-1936.CivWarlordsSave

Yeah let's finish this baby as Cathy is way too strong but who knows maybe Greyfox can use Vulcan mindmeld. LOL

Cathy has enough on her hands now????? Oh boy are we the target?
