PH07: The School of Athens

Sounds good to me. i have to be honest and say it's been a while since i looked at the save and don't remember much. will remedy this tonight.

I like the idea of banking GE for Elevator though there is a chance that if we're too behind on the tech race it won't guarantee us getting Elevator first.

I think that our best chance for a succesful war is to get it going as soon as possible because Gandhi won't get any weaker.

Artillery sounds a useful objective: requires rifling, steel and physics iirc.

Pholkhero is on deck.

hmm. we are way behind in the space race. the AI are not very competent, but it is imho a long shot

set started out with this...

Civ4ScreenShot0103.jpg

hmmm.... see if we can change it; or at least start to.

in sparta as mentioned built units, primarily cannons. went the indust route.

the trade market was pretty active. i started by visiting everyone we had deals with (except asoka). we renegotiated for a couple more gold each.

asoka made a demand, we should change relegions---no.

then this...

Civ4ScreenShot0104.jpg

i wanted the gold (and the diplo+) so i offered this...

Civ4ScreenShot0105.jpg

then this...

Civ4ScreenShot0107.jpg

we aren't ready for war so i did. we should think about switching soon. i would however spread the faith to get the benefit from pacifism in all cities.

built couple banks, building more. and science builds.

forgot the screenies, but shaka and church canceled all deals. i was able to renegotiate all of them except the def pacts. we need to be watchful of the diplo situation. need more troops soon.

here are couple other screens.

Civ4ScreenShot0109.jpg

culture front is looking better.

Civ4ScreenShot0110.jpg

played 11. couldn't remember if we were at 10 or 15. so i stopped here not sure if i went 1 turn to many.

we're playing 15 if not in war, but that's fine. I'll even us up someway or another.

Good turns, and here's hoping we can stave off attack from Shaka until after we launch :yup:

edit: got it, and taking a look around now.

edit 2, some time later: okay, played up to turn 420. After the doom and gloom on the thread, I was expecting a rough hoe of it, but I was pleasantly surprised. We've got virtual tech parity w/much of the world, and bismarck is up about 2 techs, one of which is Rocketry. However, his production looks to be awful as most of hills are windmilled, and there ain't that many of them. Even w/o warfare, i have a good feeling about our chances.

I'll post a report either tonight (doubtful) or tomorrow (more probably).

going out of town for the weekend. to the in-laws. they have no internet access. be back monday.

Turn 407/660 (1782 AD) [12-Jul-2007 17:49:57]
I noticed this:
IMG01-1782Town.jpg

I imagine we just won the tile from England, and am going to send some workers there to deal with it. We’re running low on things for them to do, so I’m putting some on “Build Trade Network” to railroad everything in the name of Homeland Security. (By the end, we’ll have much, if not all, on “BTN”.)

Notice, on the IBT: Attitude Change: Asoka(India) towards Xander(Greece), from 'Annoyed' to 'Cautious' Hmmm...just the thing to lull him into a false sense of security

Turn 408/660 (1784 AD) [12-Jul-2007 17:53:10]
Shaka came by and wanted to trade.
IMG02-1784ShakaTrade.jpg

No one else needed it so I took the deal for the cash.

Hannibal also came by (I could tell by the huge slow down on his initial appearance this save).
IMG03-1784HannieTrade.jpg

We traded him a health resource for a happy, but for the life of me, I can’t remember specifics.

Also, Athens finished a Factory, and started on a Coal Plant. (11 turns)

Turn 409/660 (1786 AD) [12-Jul-2007 17:56:54]
Princeton is done with its Bank, and I started it on a Coal Plant (5 turns) only now do i ask myself: do we have coal??
Canon done at Sparta and on to Infantry (4 turns)
Jaipur grows: 12
Hyderabad grows: 14

Turn 410/660 (1788 AD) [12-Jul-2007 17:58:05]
We learned Industrialism, and I went for Artillery (8 Turns)
IMG04-1788ArtieStartie.jpg

This, on the way to Rocketry and Satellites.

I noticed this, too:
IMG05-1788Aluminium.jpg

Not bad. We just have to keep up the cultural pressure on the space to ensure it remains Greek!

IBT:
Ahh, all good things come to an end: Attitude Change: Asoka(India) towards Xander(Greece), from 'Cautious' to 'Annoyed'.
However, Bismarck, our rival, loves use even more: Attitude Change: Bismarck(Germany) towards Xander(Greece), from 'Pleased' to 'Friendly'

Turn 411/660 (1790 AD) [12-Jul-2007 17:59:12]
Nothin', man ~

Turn 412/660 (1792 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:00:24]
Sparta is done with that Infantry and I start it on Tanks (5 turns) for now until kingdom come (or Mech Inf)
Sorbonne also finished a bank, and also started on an armored unit (8 turns).
Faraway Bengal finished its Harbor, and I started it on a Libarary (23 turns) for a bit of science boost.

Turn 413/660 (1794 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:01:21]
Our fair capital and Old Mother, Princeton is done with its Coal Plant, and fires up the Tank factories, as well (5 turns)
Bengal grows: 10

Turn 414/660 (1796 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:01:50]
Lahore went from an Islamic Temple to a Factory (75 turns) ~ uhm, that should be changed :smoke:
Cambridge grows: 21

IBT:
Boy, this guy is mercurial alright! Attitude Change: Asoka(India) towards Xander(Greece), from 'Annoyed' to 'Cautious'

Turn 415/660 (1798 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:02:16]
Cambridge is done an Observatory, and joins the Tank production (8 turns).

I also noticed that a Great Prophet was born in Germany, sO I clicked his little face on my screen:
IMG06-1798MoTzuBorn.jpg

This is when I noticed that he had NO mines! [ed. note: okay, some, but only on resources!]

Turn 416/660 (1800 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:02:57]
Dartmouth finished its Harbor, and went on to a Courthouse (36 turns). It needs the reduction in maintenance pretty badly, so perhaps we can help it along somehow.

IBT:
I noticed that Bismarck changed to State Property, which augments Windmills!

Turn 417/660 (1802 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:03:59]
Ahhh, Armored satisfaction:
IMG07-1802Tank.jpg

As I said, Sparta's now stuck on Tanks.

Turn 418/660 (1804 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:04:25]
Artillery came due, and I selected Rocketry (10 Turns).

Princeton: Tank > Tank
Athens: Coal Plant > Odeon for cultah!
and Calcutta: Jewish Temple > Library

Turn 419/660 (1806 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:05:26]
Sorbone goes Tank > Tank, too.
Sparta grows: 18

Turn 420/660 (1808 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:06:03]
Here’s a convenient source of Indian oil:
IMG08-1808IndianOil.jpg

I’ve got two tanks set-up to take out that one infantry.

Also, Jaipur grows: 13.

IBT:
Oh well: Attitude Change: Asoka(India) towards Xander(Greece), from 'Cautious' to 'Annoyed'. He loves me not!

Turn 421/660 (1810 AD) [12-Jul-2007 18:06:25]
Asoka wants to trade us:
IMG09-1810AsokaTrade.jpg

I said, why not?

Another Tank rolled off the assembly line @ Sparta, and is on a go-to down to the Indian front.

We’ll need more to catch up with India:
IMG10-1810Power.jpg

Here’s the demographics, just as disappointing:
IMG11-1810Demo.jpg

But the tech screen’s not bad:
IMG12-1810Tech.jpg

Perhaps we should trade for Communism for Scotland Yard??

And so, as I mentioned, I don't think that we're in too much of a bad way at this point. It'll be touch-and-go for sure, but I think if we're careful, and play well, we could pull this off ~ one last exciting Space Race the 'old fashioned way' (since it'll change in BtS).

Also, as i've been harping on, we put Princeton on the Apollo, and grab Satellites next. Then, we head down to the bottom of the tech tree, and beeline for Robotics, bulb the Elevator (if we've got good mojo, Princeton will be the right latitude!), and then go for the rest of the SS parts. Launch and we win! [party]

Thoughts and discussion??

The line-up is:
Lukep >
Codeman > OoP until 07/16
Pholk > just played

Pigswill or Zophos ~ UP NOW ~ whoever can play soonest, grab it and go. The other will be on deck.

And the save:

Neither Zophos nor Pigswill can play?

25 more hours, and then its on you, Lukep, if you please ~

Sorry, been a bit busy recently (and I was politely waiting for Zophos). At work at the moment. I'll try to get to it later today. if I haven't posted a 'got it' in the next 12 hours then please skip me.

alrightey ~ Zophos, any slowdown in work for you of late?

Got it for 10 turns.

Time to focus on military upgrades and raise cash by slider and merchant specialists. Asoka is the target, starting with Delhi coz its a cultural oppressor.

Edit: Communism is worth acquiring just for state property and getting some workshops established. Scotland Yard is a bonus. If we can hurt Asoka before he acquires artillery then we have a chance.

Sorry...I'd checked on Friday night (apparently before Pholk played) and was MIA yesterday because of my anniversary. Just checked back in. I'll take it after Pigswill.

Here's the save: http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/90414/Xander_AD-1825.CivWarlordsSave

Played 15 peaceful turns. Bit dull really. Started by maxing cash for upgrades. Traded artillery to ch'ill for communism and 260g. Switched from FM to SP, Hannibal still pleased.

Noticed we didn't have any coal. Swopped some deals around. Ended up with trading corn to Chill for wheat; silk+8gpt to Shaka for coal; dye to Shaka for 17gpt.

Built workshops in Sparta which is currently building Ironworks (9 turns to go). Started to turn Cambridge into production city by changing farms to workshops and settling specialists on watertiles to cover food deficit. Cambridge has started on Apollo (17 turns to go); changing forest to workshop gives a nice production boost (120 chopped hammers). Cambridge completed a GS (only GP this set) which got settled in Princeton.

Spent about 5000gp on upgrades. We have a slightly better army and a few more warships (4 destroyers, BS, BS completes next turn). Nearly all our army is stacked in Lahore:
x5a0000.jpg

Also got a few tanks nearby for raiding/counter attacks. Other cities have about 1 unit to reduce military safety anxiety syndrome.

Our power still sucks:
x5b0000.jpg

Haven't made a start on Scotland Yard yet (or West Point).

Bismark has been busy building wonders (3GD 1814, RocknRoll 1818, Eiffel 1820). Asoka has been busy sending Jewish missionaries around.

Over to Zophos.

Over to Zophos.

Up in RotQM04 as well, so it won't be tonight. Since we've been playing a bit of 'open roster'...anyone who can play tonight is welcome to jump in. If not, I'll be on it tomorrow sometime.

nice turns, Pigs. Did you build more tanks at Sparta or mostly artillery??

Zophos, we'll wait for you as you're the last of the 'open' roster circuit. Our new roster is:

Lukep >> on deck
Codeman >>
Pholkhero >>
Pigswill >> just played
Zophos >> Playing

Also, see how the war goes, and perhaps still play 15 turns if you can.

Only new builds have been tanks and warships; artillery and infantry are all from upgrades. I diverted Sparta to Ironworks, probably a mistake when it should have carried on with tanks. Always have been a crap war-monger (so I passed the game on in the nick of time  )
