PH07: The School of Athens

there isn't a lot to report. see what i can do...

* we popped 2 GS. one in dartmonth and 1 in cambridge. haven't used either. they will each give 2200 towards eletricity--- needs 10000.
* traded astronomy around. got some maps and a lot of gold---1500. also got a couple techs---forgot which ones. been running 100% science as a result. assembly line in 4 now.
* alot of revolt/unhappy cities. spent most builds on happy buildings. only a couple still unhappy. remember, our UB gives a couple happy and a couple culture. we should be able to take a couple english cities via culture.
* zulu war with england... they now have peace and england is a vassal of shaka.
* continued building units also.
* globe completed in cambridge.
* since don't need the draft right now switched out of nationhood.
* tried to adjust next city to pop merchant.

here are world pics as of now.

Zophos, could you act as 'captain' in my absence, posting rosters and general prodding?
Sure, no prob.

As I said, I'm anti-war at this juncture, but DO think taking down Churchill would be very beneficial to the win. Asoka may be a tech threat, but I'm not sure if he's a production threat anymore. Our biggest threat may be Bismarck for space, and Shaka for war.
Wholeheartedly agree. I actually think that Biz is likely to be our biggest problem, since he'll have truly astonishing production potential when he gets to the late game, and his UU could make mincemeat of us if we try to take him out (before choppers become available). I'd stay out of the war, and try to peacefully take over some extra territory if the opening presents itself.

Once Shaka and Churchill have beat each other up, we may want to re-evaluate, of course - it might be worth losing the DPs at that point if we can grab a big chunk of the two wounded civs.

Checking out Codeman's report it seems that Ch'ill has vassalised to Shaka so we need to be cultured in our response.

I'm UP.

And I've got it.

Not sure what to do with it however.

Diplo is surely out, too much mutual satisfaction around.

Space?

Do we use culture slider for happy and allocate merchants and scientists?

Do we settle GS as super-specialists?

Does anyone know how to run SE for late game teching?

i've found SE alone less effective in late game. a combination is best. maybe pop merchants for gold so we can run 100% science.

Played 10 turns up to 1730.

Here's the save: http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/90414/Xander_AD-1730.CivWarlordsSave

Another quiet set. Picked up (part-researched) AL and RR from Ch'ill in exchange for astro and physics. Researching electricity (10turns).

Settled 2GS in Princeton which is now building Oxford (10 turns).

Bismark built pentagon. Shaka's switched to police state (got fascism, trailing in other techs).

No more GPeople.

Currently running culture 20%, money 30%, science 50% and breaking even.

Workers are building railroads.

I deleted archers and upgraded some units.

Bismark is storming ahead in tech and power. Shaka is powering up. I can't see an easy way to win this.

We have a chance of popping a GM. Maybe use him for trade mission (TM), use cash to upgrade CR grens to CR inf and have another go at Asoka.

the game really seems to be becoming difficult. with our variant it will be extremely hard. i feel to win we will have to switch to a military game. pillage money and so on. i think the war monger in each of us will need to come out if we want to pull this off.

Ok...guess that makes me up again.

I'll take a look around and see what we can do. I am similarly concerned about our ability to compete in the space race with our variant. I may well check in here before playing, so stay tuned.

Codeman >>
Pigswill >> just played
Zophos (C) >> UP NOW
Lukep >> on deck

Pholkhero >> OoP until maybe 07/10

okay, since z is unavailable and i'm oop, perhaps luke or code or pigs can pick this up, just so long as someone plays I guess.
I'm still OoP but I'll prob be back this sat.

okay. following the roster it would now be...

Pholkhero>> Oop until Saturday
Codeman >>
Pigswill >> played most recent set
Zophos (C) >> unavailable
Lukep >> up

will play tomorrow.

Bismark has huge advantage in late game.

So the only solution is to be much bigger than him --> asoka at least must go

biology is key for us too

have to say i just had my first SP victory on monarch. yeah me!!! was space but, MY GOD, is it more difficult than prince. i don't know what i would have done if not for my spies. yes i do, i would have lost.

next time i will turn raging barbs off. i think they made my early game a little to hard.

on this game. do we have i direction we are going in? i think we can do space, will need spies to keep an eye on (and work) the other civs. of course we have some wars to win first... at least that's my thoughts.

dye to bismark for 18 :gold:
iron to togu for dyes
fire merchants (except in Athens) in favor of scientists.
we are losing ground in the research departement
we need to rearm quickly and take down asoka. That is really the only solution to be big enough to be able to compete.
At the moment, the 3 cities we took him cost more that what they give us.
taking down Churchill would be even better, but he is wassal to shaka

our power graph sucks

factory (and observatory when it fits) everywhere, then military mostly

1742
shaka get a Golden Age. bad news

1748
we get a scientist in Athens, not a GM. settle him in princeton

1754
we get oxford. Princeton is now churning 320+ :science: we need more.
a settled GS here is 20 :science: per turn
start FP in HYbberabad

1760
We get a GE ! I did not used him pending discussion

I would settle him in princeton
Once the round of building is done i would go free religion

Ok, a few items:
  1. I'm sorry for disappearing.
  2. I'm glad lukep stepped in to cover my appalling absence.
  3. I learned something new this week - not all hotels have figured out that Internet access is worth having. :gripe:
  4. Did I mention I'm sorry?

Spoiler those who want an explanation :

Short-notice business trip to Napa Valley (in California), to put together a deal to buy a winery - left on the 4th. The owner made the arrangements, and put me up in a B&B with no 'net access. I'd played my set on the plane, expecting to post when I got in that night, but no dice. Spent three days with no connection, got back this afternoon.

Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa.

I'm back now, obviously.

Run with it, guys, since I'm working the rest of the weekend anyway. I'll just take the skip 'til next round.

Is Pholkhero back on duty yet? Ready to resume his position at the helm and steer us through the treacherous waters of the Late Game SE?

let's get this moving...

Pholkhero>> our fearless leader...
Codeman >> will get things rolling.
Pigswill >>
Zophos (C) >> apologized for MIA---internet access was unavailable
Lukep >> played most recent set

i will grab this tomorrow or wednesday if no one else wants to get things rolling. all still playing please take a moment to check the game, refresh yourself from the thread, and finally post your thoughts.

Okay, from a vacation that was a bit too wet and chilly, and a return home that was a bit too internet-less (I blame bad mojo from Zophos), you're fearless *ahem, ahem* leader *cough* has returned.

Give me tonight to catch up and I'll post a meaningful post in tomorrow morning. I see that Codeman has got it, so we'll go from there, but I want to keep the game moving so the roster will be fluid w/the exception of:
Lukep > just played
Codeman > has it

Unless Pig has an objection, I'll step on deck, too.
Pholkhero > the lareless feeder, on the poop deck, shouting in Coherently (notice, I don't mean "incoherently" but speaking the language of the Coherent peoples of southern New Guinea)
rest of the crew > readying the ropes in case they need to tie me to the mastpole

:run:

Some thoughts:

It seems unlikely that we'll space-race succesfully with our current economy.

There ain't much scope for improving research significantly in existing cities.

Therefore we need to expand.

India remains the most likely target, they're already pi**ed with us, we're competing (unsuccesfully) in a culture war.

We need to improve our military. One way to achieve this is by drafting infantry; its quick but will significantly affect happiness and doesn't produce experienced units.

We can raise cash to upgrade. Switch research to 0, change all scientists back to merchants, build banks (we currently have none).

We're still Buddhists but our Indian acquisitions ain't so maybe knock out some missionaries to instruct them on the Noble Way.

GE maybe use to accelerate a national wonder. Ironworks in Sparta? Wall Street once we've built six banks?

Okay, so it looks like we have two goals, one near-term and one long-term.

We need to get our military up to snuff, and prepare for an invasion of India. let's go heavy on the canon (Collateral Carnage like the SG). We can then head towards Industrialism and Artillery for more firepower w/our siege weapons. We can have Sparta produce units, while the rest work on infra. builds to strengthen the economy. Let's keep the science level as high as possible and rely on Sparta to build up our military with Garrisons and an Expeditionary Force. Then, when the war begins, we can switch the economy to $$$ and upgrade our garrisons to guard against a backstab.

Long term, let's head for the Space Elevator, perhaps even saving the GE for that 'just in case.' That'll help tremendously in the race. That and spies, so maybe get Communism sooner rather than later. How about after Artillery, we go Rocketry, Satellites, and then back down to the bottom to get Robotic Parts (I think that's the one that's a prereq for the Space Lift).

I will look at the save once Codeman is done, but before that, what do you all think of the above plan??
