[GS] Phoenicia Discussion Thread

just a question out of curiosity : does anyone settle more than 5-6 cities early gameP

We're limited to few cities due to loyalty. Phoenicia does not have that problem.

You need to stop thinking 1:1. In every game I've ever played there are always a couple prime city positions I can't afford to settle cause there's a -20 modifier there.

Yeah, I often find there's still lots of possible settling locations, and with a base +100% settler bonus in at least one city without even slotting in a policy card, definitely massive city spam will be a big bonus of theirs. And if they can get to a new location and get their capital setup there, could potentially be able to settle 3-4 cities in an area without worrying about loyalty, which combined with having a capital nearby, should let you settle/conquer a few more inland cities as well.

just a question out of curiosity : does anyone settle more than 5-6 cities early game. I mean usually there is not enough space with AI ( or multiplayer ). and getting that harbor on research will hurt a lot. if you dont take that early but lets say middle game , it is nice to have but i really am then looking to take cities and not found them.
If you play big maps with minimal civs , this could of course work but then again if we start tailoring our maps to our civs every civ is uber and OP

I think people will really have to play the civ to really know how much they can settle. Plus this equation changes a lot from difficulty level to difficulty level. It is common to focus on deity level here but balance is often more about the mid range difficulty levels where most people play. That said, even at higher difficulty levels the capacity to leverage areas for settlement others can't will be a big benefit. Plus they can get a city up and running more quickly due to a cheaper harbor. Plus the cities don't have to be a lot more than loyalty and naval unit factories.

I would also say that they are meant to expand through settling and through naval dominance. Their UU plus the ability to heal fast will really help them conquer along the coast.

Yep just focus on settling a ring of coast, eliminating rivals if you must along the way. Then you can choose to settle other continents or move inland depending on your goals.

Yup and it's fair to assume that other cities will have Harbors. So if you conquer a naval city, you'll be able to heal your other ships within a turn. Talk about a naval blitz.

What Dido is going to be great at is EXPANDING.. rapidly. Please keep in mind, that Cothon will be 50% cheaper to begin with (as most Unique Districts are), which will cost if my math's correct, 25% with a Government Plaza. And Cothon will provide +50% towards production of Settlers, which with that policy card will mean that she can just churn out Settlers VERY quickly (and with Magnus you don't even need to worry about the population loss).

She is going to be a huge runaway because BELIEVE me, many cities = a lot of science a lone (and culture)

My big mystery is why the first look didn't have Phoenicia's theme music, surely its ready. Is there something to it or just an oversight?

Kevin said it was an oversight just a few posts up the page.

The music was an error on the video. Phoenicia has their own theme and it’s fantastic! We’ll make sure to play it as part of our livestream. We’ll also talk a little about it’s unique recording process.

A few posts up says it was an error in the video. It was supposed to have the correct music.

Edit: Ninja'd twice. A new record.

At the end of the day her bonuses boil down to more settlers, more trade routes, and more naval units, but nothing she has is BETTER than anyone else's or changes the gameplay in a significant way (apart from the capital moving thing which right now seems more like a gimmick). We'll see, I hope I'm pleasantly surprised when I play her.

That Cohon will not come early if it stays where it is, you want shipbuilding for your settler before shaving a few extra turns off.
As @Ziad quite rightly pointed out the captured Cothons are gonna be great early for that snowball heal... and you can train your settlers there after peace.

Well it's one tech away at that point.

You'll still settle early on but unlike other civilizations you can focus a bit more on the first couple of cities rather than blitz to 6 settlers (while falling behind elsewhere) in time for loyalty to stop you.

So while you can definitely settler spam from the onset like any other civ, Phoenicia then just walks up and do the exact same thing even more efficiently later without being concerned with loyalty. Use those first couple of settlers for really juicy coastal spots.

A sea shanty recorded on a boat.

I was going to guess that they found a historian/Phoenicia expert/musician to help them compose and play historically accurate Phoenician music.
