Biter bitten as French navy nets 11 Somali pirates

* May 4, 2009 - 9:05AM

As the pirates zeroed in on their prey, the dazzling sun on the horizon concealed a nasty surprise: the ship they were hunting was not a merchant vessel but a French warship.

Sailing near the outer bounds of the Seychelles archipelago's waters in the Indian Ocean on Sunday just after dawn, the pirates spotted their potential victim from afar.

But the trademark 9 metre pirate "mother-ship" escorting two small skiffs had been spotted long before by its intended prey, a French warship bristling with cannons, state-of-the-art radar technology and well-trained servicemen.

The frigate Nivose, one of the ships patrolling the region as part of the European Union anti-piracy mission Atalanta, made sure to keep the pirates thinking it was a merchant vessel.

"Visual on two skiffs." Nivose lieutenant commander Jean-Marc Le Quilliec dashes out of his cabin, certain that the pirates spotted by a Spanish vessel the previous day are at his mercy.

At around 0500 GMT (1500 AEST) the French vessel moved into the sun to keep its cover.

"They're speeding right towards us," Le Quilliec marvelled. "Let's just head into the sun and then we'll turn around to hit them head on."

When the unsuspecting pirates were close enough, the Nivose unleashed commandos on outboards and dispatched a helicopter to interdict the pirates, leaving them no chance.

"It's the exact same location as the case of the Safmarine Asia," lieutenant commander Jean-Marc Le Quilliec said, referring to an interception his ship carried out on April 15 during an attack on a Liberia-flagged merchant vessel.

The helicopter fired two warning shots to stop one of the two skiffs from fleeing. There was only one pirate left on the mother-ship, which was also intercepted moments later, with nothing on board except fuel and potatoes.

"He apparently thought the pirates had hijacked us," said Le Quilliec.

The French forces found two Kalashnikov assault rifles on one of the skiffs, ammunition, a rocket-launcher and five grenades which were deemed a hazard by the Nivose command and tossed into the sea.

The 11 captured pirates, some of them very young, looked exhausted and were made to sit on the deck with their hands on their heads as French forces searched them.

"The guys we catch are getting younger and younger," said one navy soldier. "Look at this one, he can't be 17."

Senior officers on the ship said a decision would be made later on whether or not the suspects would be transferred and where to.

In recent weeks, the French navy has handed over dozens of suspected pirates to the authorities of Puntland -- a northern Somali breakaway state which is a major piracy hub -- and Kenya.

The European Union and the United States have memoranda of understanding with Kenya to facilitate the transfer of suspected pirates to the courts in the coastal city of Mombasa.

In a bid to avoid the heavily-patrolled shipping lanes of the Gulf of Aden, some pirate groups have ventured further out into the Indian Ocean.

Several incidents were recently reported in the exclusive economic zone of the Seychelles, a small Indian Ocean nation which is a base for foreign fishing fleets and a notorious destination for luxury cruise liners.

The French are surrendering again ! :goodjob:
There been some pirate captures in the recent news but this one was pure fail (EDIT: by the pirates the french navy and commando raids get the thumbs up).

They should carry out the practice of setting fire and sinking all pirate vessals once captured. Hopefully attrition will have the desired effect.

Is this a good idea?

Is this a good idea?

Yes, enough of this U.N. nonsense about only one Somalia.

We all know damn, well that Somalia will be split up into at least 5 pieces if not much much more.

One of the tribal leaders if they actually punished them just caned the kids in the back a few times.

Now, now, France, you should not just throw away perfectly good weapons. You should melt them down and turn them into spoons.

The heck do you mean "will"? States collapsing into little statelets have happened since the dawn of time. For a quick example of the inferiority of nations that collapse, see Poland.

I am talking official U.N. recognized.

They keep backing the "actual government" with aid. Which does nothing; they only really control the capital town. Because in the end they will have to recognize all of those little areas.

I think you're mistaking the 2008 situation with the 2009 situation.

Pretty cool and hilarious, good for the French navy. They're doing their part to keep the shipping lanes clear.

My information is from fall semester in PSC 407R (politics of East Africa)

So yeah it is 2008 info.

Come to think of it...........
..........

Awww man, is my clothes out of style too?????

The Seychelles are an awesome little country, I had a real good time when I stopped there.

Well, they don't even control the capital anymore.

France is awesome.

Err, no. My question was about whether the authorities of Puntland are serious in dealing with the pirates or whether those caught would eventually be back out at sea.

I have the distinct impression that the only booming industry in Puntland is piracy. Those who don't pay are arrested, paraded before the media whilst the other responsible taxpayers have the run of the place.

Hmm... sarcasm, or not?

A mixture.

I don't see why we don't just pay them off. Call it "aid money" and save the expense of actually policing them (which has got to be far in excess of the paltry millions they've collected). Its also with no small irony that some of the nations having ships "borrowed" were involved in the raping of the fishing grounds that started this whole sick sad game. I have the distinct impression that the pirates are targeting some nations ships far more than others probably with that very notion in there minds.

Divide and conquer. Pay some of the pirates to enforce maritime law on the other pirates. You could fund a coast guard for a figure around $10 million a year. Maersk and others are probably bleeding more than that in fuel whenever a ship is forced to put on steam on the way through.

"Mr. speaker, we are for the big."

Let's go France!

Let's go France!

That was my first thought as well. Seriously, what happened with these pirates? Next time they should steal some binoculars so they can see the deck gun and realize that's not a good ship to attack.

Seriously, I found a picture of this French frigate:

I know it's French, but even still, they have obviously visible guns! Epic fail on the visual ID.
