The poorest "western" European country is Portugal, and their GDP/Capita (nominal or PPP) is higher than Poland's. Substantially higher.
Polish GDP/Capita is just as close to that of Romania as it is to that of Portugal. And is only slightly higher than Russia's.

I think you forgot to account for the Poles who might have been if it wasn't for WWII and its its proper borders (From Lübeck to Moscow to the Crimea).

this thread reminded me that I've made a map illustrating central/eastern european grieviances when it comes to Civ4. I've never posted it, but made a new one now.
dark red is a country represented by 3 civs - Iraq (Arabs, Babylon, Sumer)
red are ones represented by 2 civs: Germany - HRE and Germans, Greece - Greeks and Byzantium, Tunis - Arabs and Carthago
Pink are the ones represented directly.
Orange are ones represented indirectly, f.e. Arab states by Arabs, Belgium by France and Netherlands, Austria by Germany and HRE, Scandinavians by Vikings, Italy by Rome etc
yellow are countries you could claim are represented, f.e. Romania by Rome, but it's far-stretched
As you see, while all the western europe is represented, there's a huge gap between Russia and Germany. That shows our complains were legitimate, and CFC posters ripping on poor Poland are racist scum

It's that simple. The reason the issue get so much attention is because some people seem to think that placing Poland in a category that includes less well off states is in some way offensive... Such subtle bigotry generally rouses posters that really couldn't give a rat's behind about such minor Polish issues to argue incessantly about it. Hence the mega-threads.

Still, there's a huge blank space there. And I'm not sure Poles are happy by having their cities represented by HRE, or Bulgarians having their cities represented by Turks.
