Portal 2

Spoiler :
There's noting hilarious about it (except randomly ending up on the moon).

Spoiler :
Exactly, none of those other stories of whatever involve (evil, at that) characters being literally teleported to and trapped on the moon, so quite funny to have that in common.

The reason they did that was because they wanted an excuse to not kill Wheatley, and the moon was the only thing that Chell would be able to make a portal on with her gun. I think it's merely a coincidence. :p

A guy named Ryan Palser built two replica Aperture turrets - working electronics, motion detection, sound playback ("I don't hate you"), even real lazerz.

He's built two so far; Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games bought one for an undisclosed sum. The craftsmanship on these things is phenomenal. Really impressive work.

Er... you guys know the turrets don't even move in the game, right?

The detail work is really impressive, even the "eye" lens has "Aperture Laboratories" printed along the rim. The pics on Flickr are amazing, he really put some serious time into this.

Um yes they move, they open up and close and the laser moves around. The guns come out and stuff. They just don't physically turn and walk.

Same with sentry guns in TF2. Well, except that month we had a mod installed where engies could "becomes" the sentry and slowly move across the map while it fired off at all the lovely new targets. Nothing scarier than seeing five level 3 sentries backing up two ubered heavies and the rest of the attacking team on Dustbowl).

So an aimbot made portable? Sounds horrible.

Spoiler :
You are right. If you play the Dev commentary it states that with one of the bubbles right B4 you have to fight Wheatley

It doesn't seem to move. I thought it would move. Just the way it is it seems to be like an elaborate plastic sculpture with a motion detector and a speaker, I am underwhelmed, hehe.

This required an almighty amount of skill and dedication - moreso if the guy was doing it for the hell of it (I don't know if he was, seeing as he is selling them on). It's a bit ridiculous to be underwhelmed because 'it doesn't move.'

I know a guy who, for the past few years, has built a huge and detailed replica model of the Bismarck. As in canoe sized and as detailed as he possibly could make it. I'll see what happens when I tell him I'm underwhelmed because it doesn't have a working engine :p

I clicked expecting that it would move, and it didn't, so below my expectation. Yeah sure nothing should have led me to believe that it would move, but somehow I have a lot more hope for someone to build a moving one than for someone to put a (totally useless) engine in a Bismarck replica.

PS: I'm sure your friend's replica is probably ten folds more awesome than this turret.

I'm pretty sure that making one of the turrets be able to fold out and move would take a lot more work than making a few screws turn in a model ship. It's not as if doing so would make it any more 'useful' than having a model ship that can propel itself.

Oh heavens yes - canoe sized! He was able to put his wife in the 'hull' and have her float into the middle of a pond, if that helps get an idea of the scale.

Of course, there was no form of propulsion, so he was able to escape to the pub while she had to paddle her way out.

Heh. I'm guilty of that. I already have the Glados Escape Advice achievement. :)

I think if Wheatley actually said there'd be an achievement, that would've been the funniest thing on this earth.

Yeah, exactly. The amount of effort that went into those Portal turrets and the quality of the workmanship is amazing. Yes, they are not actual turrets that open up and fire guns at you when you walk by... but they do everything else. Handmade by a guy who just did so for the heck of it. That's far more than I could put together even if I had the tools and the materials. So yes, I'd call that impressive.

"What, it doesn't even MOVE?? How underwhelming." :lol:

Oh there was no question about that being a death trap, I quicksaved and dove right into it for what I suspected was an achievement. Totally worth it.

Definitely!

EDIT: Free soundtrack pack for Portal 2!
Songs to Test By
May 25, 2011 - The Portal 2 Team
With Aperture-brand turrets, boots, bots and panels flooding the applied science aisle of your local department store, you could forgive the up-and-coming test lab for taking a breather. Judging from their latest press release, though, their laurels remain untouched by backsides. Bolstered by recent breakthroughs in the field of jazz smoothing, Aperture announced today the first of three downloadable aural stimulus packages.

Whether you're a mega-science corporation with decades of test experience, or a young start-up liberating your first test subject from non-testing with a chloroform-soaked rag, Aperture guarantees results. Wake up your test subject, open the chamber door, and press play--let Aperture's patent-pending rhythmic compliance enhancers do the rest.

Yeah the room where you have the turrets behind the barrier with the reverse light pathway button and the blue goo definitely took me the longest. Once I did it I thought I was such an idiot to not have figured it out sooner.

So after reading the easter egg thing, let me see if I have a few things straight:

Spoiler :

This takes place hundreds of years after the end of Portal 1;

Chell is probably the daughter of Caroline and Cave, or the clone of Caroline;

This takes place after the end of the Half Life storyline since the first Portal occurred during the same time, and this takes place hundreds or thousands of years after that, so presumably the Earth still exists although it is unclear if humans are still there, if the Combine has eliminated all of us, etc. etc., since we come out into a wheat field (what's the significance of the King Turret we see at the end?);

The ending of Portal 1 was changed by a patch, and now you get dragged back underground at the end by a party robot??? That was what really confused me--the entire time I was playing Portal 2 I was assuming I was just a clone of the character I played in the first Portal, since I remember escaping at the end of Portal and I played it before they did a ninja edit to the end!

Am I missing anything??
