Le Pétit Prince
Um, what? How so?
The part where you called it 'American Infinitas'. We were trying to distinguish between the past, where America was the colonizing agent, to the present, where it (along with the rest of the SolFed apparatus) has prevented self-government for decades.
In any case, whether you are a local government attempting to secede or a grassroots movement, how do you expect to find the support necessary to even get to the part where you hold a press conference, much less actually stay in power for more than a week? I seriously doubt that most people in Carmenta would want to severe their ties with the USA, or that they view it as subordinated to the SolFed to any inordinate amount. A bunch of paranoid space rednecks, sure. Note that they would seem if anything much less trustworthy than the SolFed to your average Carmentan, having come out of nowhere to basically usurp power.
The update:
On nearby Carmenta, the separatist attitude coalesced somewhat in the first half of the 2140's. The loyal, Earth-appointed colonial government, combined with the Solar Federation's strong stance on its member states' colonial possessions, meant that a disorganized push for independence wouldn't work, as it had on Bacchus - a fact that Carmenta's separatist masterminds surely recognized.
In 2143, an organization styling itself as a "shadow government" was formed, with significant (though not majority) support among the Carmentans. Carmenta, somewhat surprisingly, was a strongly pro-ethnic streaming region of SolFed control, a point of division with the more ambivalent Bacchans. Thus, the shadow government did not favor a union with Bacchus, instead advocating that the Solar Federation be pressed to specifically name its criteria for a colony to gain independence, so that an agreed timetable for the Carmenta's independence could be decided.
Why the shadow government decided to move to direct action rather than wait another 50 years for a timetable recommending a phased withdrawal plan is anyone's guess.
Don't hold your breath, though. This one's going to take awhile.
Merry Christmas to you too Symph!
