Pre-CNES: Flowers on the Working Title

Thlayli, I had something completely different in mind, but this seems really good, so I think I'm going to use it! Thanks for the work you're doing. :)

Lol Perfection, just how often do you search the forums for your name? .xD

EDIT: I'd like to close submissions tonight but there are still many factors that I'm waiting on. Please work on getting your submissions in and polished ASAP.

Ah, that took me by surprise... I won't be able to flesh out my history. I mean I have a history in mind, but no idea how fit with the epic back story that I haven't had time to read yet!

I can probably throw so history together by then but I'm not sure how well my ideas will fit Thlayli's idea of the world as very little was said about my region, that I could tell though there probably is a high probability that I missed. I have a general idea but a cultural overview would help cement a few things for me.

You can work on fleshing out the history after the NES has started, so long as I have all the non-history stats finished we can get this show on the road.

Crezth, I'm leaning towards Fancy unit type, but I'd love to see more examples of the sprite set or at least the base guy in red. I want to emulate a Middle Eastern military feel; that guy with all his strangeness could feel Persian. Possibly. Would you care to share? I'm either going with that or Legion though... :) And then I think I'm done.

Lucky, your nation idea is dumb and doesn't fit with the background. I'm going to change it or insist that Crezth does.

Long story short, your Slavic-esque culture (Vlachid) has long menaced the civilized world, but has probably become more civilized itself in recent years. You worship the Pure Sun, a somewhat uncompromising monotheism, but beyond that you have a lot of leeway to describe things. Powerful Stapanates (monarchies with theocratic influences) should feature something of a role in your regional history.

The 'Fancy' unit is a Holy Empire intervention soldier from NEB1 ;) When I'm back on my old PC, I'll make sure to share all my sprites and bits from that NES in usable format.

I'm currently working on drawing up the units (in color) for everyone at this point. I'll be posting the examples as they're developed.

No! Thlayli, major issues here - I don't want to be railroaded to have a history that is totally opposite to the character of the nation that I had in mind. Hopefully a compromise can be reached.

See, these are my thoughts: a gradual aggregation of morally-minded peoples with ancient tribal roots, a mixture of states and cultures that have banded together against invaders, different capitols being sacked and destroyed at varying times and new centres emerging, with periods of seafaring and establishing contacts overseas.

A very strong defensive ethos - not blind patriotism, but a sense of duty to stand up for something that is recognised as unique in a world overrun with imperialism and dictators. Anti-capitalist, sub-urban, agricultural, libertarian, open and artistic society that will have problems with industrialisation. The principle of free will and the right of secession for all territories. Deeply spiritual without being religious or dogmatic. Yet strangely authoritarian, in that voting power is concentrated in a select few community leaders.

We can certainly work that out. You can be a different sub-sect of the Vlachids who weren't as violently anti-civilization and decadence.

Long story short, many Vlachids (particularly the Lijian-influenced ones, Lijian being my region) followed the more tolerant faith of the Thousandfold God, which is basically a spirituality without a defining god, more centered around the ideal that anything holy can be an expression of the divine. In response to Lijiani liberalism, your peoples might have broken away from the more theocratic intolerant tribes to your north, in an alliance with Lijiani republicans, and forged your own path. That allows you to work in your narrative of your capital being sacked (by the theocrats) and contacts with the outside world.

That certainly works better for me. p

Here's an initial draft of the sprites for each faction, for your being-aware pleasure. Submit complaints and requests summarily.

In light of the sluggishness with which people are updating their stuff, and in recognizing certain... difficulties in getting this sluggishness to subside, I'm pushing the deadline back some. Let's aim for a launch on Tuesday instead. Hoorah!

Kraz and I have been talking on #nes and we have come to the conclusion that Officers are slightly overpowered.

Also, with them costing the same as forts but basically better in every way, there's no reason to build forts ever, ever. This needs tweaking.

Another question: Shouldn't the research point requirement scale with higher tech levels? Like Level 1 techs costing 5, 2 costing 10 and so on. It gives people more incentive to get more research points, and keeps people with research labs and appropriate doctrines from running away with 3 techs in a turn.
