Pre-CosmicNES: Shards of an Empire

Excellent. Two notes:

It looks a little smaller than I was expecting. This will mean it will be cheap, but not as useful when setting up a colony.

By default, a ship will have enough supplies to move one turn's worth of moves into unexplored space: after that, it will need to return to a friendly colony. Do you want to make this ship long distance? It will dramatically increase the cost, but would also be useful when exploring. (I also need to add that to the front page.)

1) I don't know anything about the size, make it larger since it should be useful if it will be reusable.

2) I'll make another ship that does long distance exploration.

It just struck me as small for a colony ship, that's all.

I'll derive your stats.

Are you familiar with Galactic Civilizations? It has a ship design feature that may be very useful:

Each component comes with three basic variables: Power, Cost, and Size. Power is how much of an effect it give. This is obvious for weapons and defence, but for range modules and suchlike it means how much the range is increased, how much further the sensors see, etc. Cost is also self-explanatory. In GalCiv, each hull size (Tiny, Small, Medium, Large, and Huge) has a progressively higher cost, range, hitpoint count and size points. Each module also has size points, and the limit on how much stuff you can fit on a given hull is how many modules you can fit on within the hull's size point limit.

It seems to me that the hull sizes from the game were for computational simplicity, and you could go the other way around, determining hull size (and therefore hull cost) by the size points of the modules the player wants on his ship.

A quick rundown of module types:
Range (how far you could travel from friendly territory)
Sensors (which you'll probably dispense with, as this map isn't tile-based)
Weapons (in three flavours for an RPS thing)
Defenses (three types, each countering one weapon type particularly well)
Hull improvements (increased Hitpoints)
Engines (how fast you'd travel, which might eat up your range faster)
Certain one-off things (Colonization module, troop transport module, starbase constructor module, trade module, etc - provides a certain ability, only need one i.e. you have it or you don't)

There were also Cargo Hulls, which were quite cheap for their size but only had one hit poit - for comparison, a Tiny hull had 6, a Large one over 50
Miniaturization was something that could be researched, giving each hull size a few more Size Points, which in the system I just described would probably translate to a small percentage off the final sum of Module Size Points.

I didn't see much to do with combat, so I just gave it some very low stats in that regard. I can't imagine it would see much action anyways. The upside is that it's fairly inexpensive, as far as a colony ship would go.

Spoiler :
Name/Class: Lanshire Class Deep Space Frigate/Cruiser

Cost: 5EP

Strength (anti-capital ship, anti-cruiser, anti-fighter, defense, offense): 1, 1, 1, 2, 1

Buildable by: House Lanshire, ?

Research cost: 3TP

Special: Increases the success rate of Colonies, and decreases the cost associated with colonizing a system.

Description: Designed by Rathus Lanshire the ship was meant to aid his many expiditions into unknown space. It is equiped with high powered sensor arays that take information of solar systems as well as a modern cartography system to help map out unknown space.

What makes the ship special however is the equipment on board that can set up the foundations for a colony to grow on. This equipment includes heavy power tools attached to the bottom of the ship to allow it to clear out and level a colony site as it flies over the ground. Another contraption are folding landing docks where it is safe for ships to land and refule on. It also carries many living pods that can be linked up together and contain rudimentary living nessesities and quarters for the colonists.

The Lanshire Frigate as it is often shortened to, was used to a great extent by Rathus when he began to colonize Thaden. He would prepare many colony sites for the colonists and allow them to arrive to much more agreeable conditions unlike every colonization attempt before it. This closed a large gap that kept many people from becoming colonists before, there were always adventurous people wanting to look for a new place but the discomfort and danger of early colonial life held many back, now that the colony's basic infastructure is in place ahead of time there is little holding them back.

Can I use multiple ones to help increase the benifits?

I don't see why not, but the effect of the second won't be as big as the effect of the first.

Mind giving the actual stats for how it will help?

@Talonschild:
I am, actually. I wanted to go away from a component based system, instead focusing on the different ship classes and a more abstracted system. But GC2 does have a very good system.

@Patchy:
Colonization will work differently on different systems. It depends on how easy it is to colonize. As such, I can't give you anything exact, but you can expect about 20% of the cost to be shaven off for one of these things. Two colonies and it will have payed for itself.

A view of the planet, Endas, from its moon

The Arcturus System contains one habitable planet, the Endas. Ever since its colonization, dating at least a hundred year before the creation of the United Empire, the planet of Endas have been the Alastor Family's seat of power.

The planet sports a stellar ring, an ancient remnant of a destroyed metallic moon. The cause for the ring's creation is currently unknown, but the metallic component in the asteroids refract the light from Arcturus before it reaches the planet of Endas into shades of blue, green, red white, purple and gray. The color of the skyline of Endas thus tends to constantly shift colors.

The planet itself is earthlike and pleasant. It was originally full of life even before the first colonists arrived. Many of the foreign flora and fauna still remain on the planet after hundreds of years. This fact, combined with aforementioned stellar ring, made this planet a popular tourist destination during the greatest era of the Empire.

Its pleasant atmosphere combined with its isolation from Sol and the central planets allowed its inhabitants to develop its own vibrant culture separate from other humans. The architecture is almost always in shades of aesthetically pleasing white and blue. The streets are always wide and orderly. The abundant flora of the planet often assert itself among the cityscape. The language used is a heavily corrupted dialect of modern day Portuguese.

It's strategic location in the middle of 4 fast travel routes to other planets, combined with its abundant natural resources, led to the planet becoming the mercantile center of the localized area.

House Motto: The World is Endless

Household Head: Duke Portas Alastor

Age: 22

Skill: Administrative

Relationships: Sister: Leona Alastor Age 19

Sister Mana Alastor Age 14

Military: House Alastor reserves a sizeable retinue fleet on orbit over Endas while smaller task force patrols the local trade routes. At the core of Endasian Military is the House Guard, well trained body guards who swore absolute loyalty to whomever holds the title of the Duke. In the past, they were observed to spontaneuously change allegiance from one brother to another during a succession crisis, as soon as the former was killed by a sniper's bullet.

History: The first settlars on the planet of Endas were members of an early colonization effort from Sol. Due to ineffective leadership combined with mechanical failures and untested FTL drives, the ship containing the explorers drifted much more off course and away from Sol than they originally intended. They would have died of starvation, if it was not for the timely discovery of the planet. Here they lived in isolation for years, developing their unique culture in the process.

They were rediscovered nearly 2 generations later by Duke Ranee Alastor, or the Conqueror Duke as he became known. Against his fleet of cruisers, the inhabitants of Endas had no chance of victory. The Duke, recognizing the planet's potential, made the planet his new seat of power.

Hundreds of years have passed from that date. The Duke's dynasty eventually adopted the inhabitants of the planet's culture, language, and values. The only thing that remains now of the conqueror's past is the fiercely loyal House Guards, the sizeable spacefleet, and the House's Flag: Red for Blood and Fire. The motto for the House, the World is Endless, used to mean that a single sin of murder is nothing in a cold and an endless world. Now it is a celebration of the perceived whimsical nature of space full of discoveries and chance.

All these were stories told by Duke Portas's late father to him. His father died urging Portas to become a honorable and virtuous ruler. Time will only tell if an ambitious young duke of the House Alastor will make an impact in the history of the world, as endless as it is.

Out of curiosity, how much longer until the game starts?

I was planning to get update 0 out by next Sunday, but that will depend on how fast I can pump stats out, and when everyone finishes their house.

I was also kinda hoping to get a couple more players, but I suppose it's to be expected. My first NES, the problems with the Aliens, etc.

Thinking of joining... but I hate the idea of going back and forth between wiki and here, can I join without contributing to a wiki page? Or going to a wiki page?

If yes here is my starting stat.

House name/Player: House Zobist/germanicus12
Flag:
Eagle represents Space Fleet status, Cross represents bars used by merchants to measure instruments. Green represents the color of the currency used within the Leonis System. White represents purity and equality.
Capital: Ad Leonis.
Preferred Map Color: Not sure what is taken, but Red, Gold, Dark Blue in that order.
Capital’s Details: Arctic Planet, difficult for farming but full of minerals and shares the system with 3 other planets, 1 other is Arctic, the other is Arid, and the last is a Gas Giant. Latter not colonizable.
Head of Household: Zed Zobist, 26, Merchant. Zed became Lord over the Leonis system when his father died, willing the system to Zed. This naturally drew the ire of his brothers who commanded the Space Fleet. But Zed was the most wealthiest man in Leonis, and he married into the prestigious Lowery family who commanded the troops on the ground and were not weak when it came to finances. So the balance of power was maintained but any mistake on either side could be disastrous for the Leonis system and all merchants and traders doing business in the system eagerly makes bets on who will win the power struggle within the powerful Leonis system.
Head of Household’s Relationships: Wife, Allyson 24. Has one young 4 yr old son, Zedidiah. Has 3 older brothers, 2 younger sisters, and both parents are dead.
History: Zed's family has managed Ad Leonis since it was discovered and founded upon the orders of the government in Sol, it was originally designed to be a military outpost charged with defending a vital chokepoint in which the human sector receives lanes from 2 hostile powers. But in the years that followed there was little military action so the family realized the importance of receiving all the merchant ships that pass through and decided to establish a trade port as well as a repair facility. Suddenly trade boomed as traders from Centauri, Muphrid, and the other powers meet and exchange goods in the system and take time off, knowing the powerful fleet left behind by the Sol Navy upon the fall of the government, will protect all sides from pirates and bandits.

Merchants, with a strong warrior culture, due to its unique position on 6 trade lanes the family controls most of the trade into the Human system and as a result of its position facing 2 other powers boasted a large space fleet commanded by warrior brothers Zachariah, and Zegedi. Zed (head of house) controlled the Merchant fleet and all ports within the Leonis system. The balance of power is controlled by the fact that Zed has the money to hire mercenaries to counter his 2 brothers space fleet, and his brothers know that by killing or usurping Zed means losing funding to maintain their space fleet. The final brother is simply a drunkard and does not contribute to the family. The sisters are young and kept hidden and safe from the pirate bands that lurks in the system hoping to strike it rich on a fat merchant ship.

Choice for Second system: Muphrid.

You don't have to contribute to the wiki. That's just something I did to make it easier for popcornlord. He'll handle most of the stuff.

We see with joy House Tyther's swift action in beginning to restore order to the Empire. As the Guardians of Humanity's Origins and legacy, We feel it is only right that our houses are united in Friendship forever more. As such, we off our Daughter Zoey Steward in Marriage to you, Lord Marken Tyther.

If this is acceptable to you, we will write up a Marriage Contract for your approval.

The Lanshire should now be on the wiki, as well as a ship Thomas made for public use.
Spoiler Sulis :
Name/Class: Sulis/Capital Ship

Cost: 7EP

Strength (anti-capital, anti-cruiser, anti-fighter, defense, offense): 5, 3, 2, 1, 5

Buildable by: No one

Research cost: 3TP

Description: Utterly massive, the Sulis class is built around a single massive spinal rail gun, designed to destroy larger ships and stationary implacements. Heavily armed, but lightly armored, the Sulis is designed to operate in conjunction with other ships for defense, hiding in the center of any formation. Tending to also be the flagship of the fleet, the Sulis class boasts a small number of point defense systems. The Sulis is NEVER encountered on it's own.

I will do Seon and Germanicus's stats tomorrow.

@Germanicus12:
I have no problem with copying the stats over to the game thread, once it is up. The wiki will have a lot of other history on it, but you could easily play the game without ever going there.

We are uncomfortable with the fact that your people have fallen so quickly from the Empire. However, it is important that the humans hold together in the coming age. I do not trust these alien species, now that there is no guarantee of their cooperation. As such, I accept your proposal.
