Pre-DaftNES4: Born of Stardust

Well, people who aren't contributing should be kicked, yes. And the more people there are, the more people get kicked for not contributing enough. However, everyone should, IMHO, be able to at least prove their worth.

Race Name: Adenari

Government: Representative Confederation

Faction Name: House of Cadrol

Location: 4G1A, henceforth to be known as Elhadros

Physical Description: The Adenari are the people of the cold world of Elsaan. Mammalian, with humanoid features and skin tones that would among humans be considered abnormally pale, sometimes even light shades of blue. Normally standing at five feet high, agriculture on the world of their origin is dominated by large tree-like tubers which flourish in the freezing climate which dominates the majority of the planet.

Character Description: The Adenari are multifarious. A natural respect for nature is embedded in them, due to the harshness of their world. Religion is not uniform, but most of the religions of the Adenaric history have been focused around nature, particularly winter. A traditionally patriarchal society, within recent history women have become integrated into politics and economical affairs. Their current modus operandi of government is a confederation of senators elected from the various regions and pseudo-nations of their world, divided into Houses which gather in the Great House or senate to elect a Consulate-Major, who is head of state. Every ten years, the position of Consulate-Major shifts based on the votes of the Consulate-Electorials of the Houses. The Consulate-Major and his or her cabinet introduce laws or programs of reform and the like to the Great House which votes upon them, and have the power to make declarations of war. Currently, the House from which the Consulate-Major hails is House Cadrol, which has in recent events been a very key player in economical and military affairs, regardless of whether or not a member of their number holds the seat. The Houses themselves are often the play-things or allies of the various industrial corporations which hold thrall over Adenaric society, and are known to push the agendas thereof, or even elect officials with strong ties to these corporations into their number. The recently established Great House Confederation which rules the Adenari is crippled by corporate and social corruption, though when united its ability to focus on the task at hand is admirable.

Home System Description: Elhadros, literally, "Sun of Elsaan", is orbited by Elsaan, an icy world just immediately within the range acceptable to habitation by "advanced", life, Ordros, a rocky planet outside the range of habitation which is dominated by mining industries ("offworld", operations on these planets are normally led by giants of industry recruiting slum labor for criminally low wages, and their operations protected by military contracting firms), and several gas-giants.

Brief History: Within the past four centuries, a rapid industrial revolution displaced the previously agricultural economy and lifestyle of the Adenari. The rapid creation of factories and privatization of property created a small middle-class, with a massive amount of impoverished slum-dwellers throughout all the various nations that divvied up the planet. Over the next century, farms were bought out by large "agri-businesses", and merged into cooperative movements which sold massive amounts of food to governments which then distributed it among corporations which lobbied in offices of representative government in favor of the positions of the ruling faction. Thanks to corporate-funded scientific ventures, nuclear energy and weaponry technology proliferated itself throughout Elsaan, and when it became clear to world governments that, "everyone had the bomb", the Great House Confederation was founded to represent the national and corporate interests of the powers that be, while seeking the advancement of the species as a whole. Or at least, that is the public stance. The division of Ordros into corporate and national sectors has led to much in-fighting among the Houses, and it has become the focus of the efforts of many of the factions which vie for political, economic, and military dominance.

Faction Description: House Cadrol, representatives of the Commonwealth of Cadrolia. Politicians, businessmen, strategists. Fighting its way through bribery, murder and standard political intrigue to the top of the ladder, House Cadrol represents a powerful political and economical element in the Great House Confederation. Funded by the corporate powers that be, and now placed in command of the combined military might of all the Adenari, House Cadrol is the eye and ear that sees all and hears all...

Age: Advanced Start. Interested in FG1B and FG1C, henceforth to be known as Llonesia and Aelenas.

-Elsaan is an industrial wasteland, divided into centralized urban areas most notable from space by the massive clouds of smog floating overhead. This does the Adenari good, however, thanks to the freezing climate of the majority of their planet. Be that as it is, those who can afford it live underground, away from the "untouchables", and the machinery they operate. The remainder of the surface is covered in tundra wasteland, and massive tuber farms which feed the ever-growing population of the planet and its environs.

-Ordros is dominated by industrial corporations and the Houses they support and fund. Its surface is mostly blank, except for the small lights of mines, and the massive holes in the earth these operations create.

-Llonesia and Aelenas are orbited by several planets, both having one colony located upon them. These are normally military ventures, and serve as centers for ship-construction. Industrial investment is forthcoming, but slow, and for now these operations are owned by the government.

Race Name: Lenitean

Ruling Faction Name: Lenitean Republic

Start position: FG2A (I'm assuming we name both Suns?) (FG2A renamed to Lolixoa I; FG2B renamed to Lolixoa II)

Physical description: Tall thin humanoid mammal species. They are a pale-ish white color, they have slender legs and long finders. Their head is very small compared to Humans' heads, they have 2 almond shaped eyes which can see in ultraviolet light. They are approximately 6-7 Feet tall. Since they are though to have evolved from sea going mammals, (such as whales, etc but thinner, taller etc) they can hold their breaths under water for considerable amounts of time, but they no longer live in the ocean and have evolved to be able to be compatible in both, (Majority on land though). (Basically the Kaminoans of Star Wars but a bit changed.)

Spoiler :
kaminoans_bg.jpg

Character description: While there is no trait that can really be found in all Leniteans the majority of them are peaceful and supporters of democracy and the such. They are very eager to spread their ideas throughout the galaxy peacefully. They are to the most part patriotic, and love their system of government, they to a lesser extent like the wildlife found on their planet and they have set up huge parks and areas to protect the wildlife from industries and such.

Home system description: Their home planet Lenitan is a temperate world such as Earth but 2 times its size. Lenitan is about 69% water, with the rest of the world being a variety of landmasses. Lenitan orbits the two stars Lolixoa I and II. But it gets most of its heat from the larger Lolixoa I. The Planet is split into several continents. The planets atmosphere is made up of much of the same things as Earth, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Argon, Neon, Etc. Lenitan has 1 moon slightly bigger then Earth's moon (about the size of Ganymede). The moon called Neetres has no atmosphere and is absolutely barren and of no interest.

Brief history: The Leniteans evolved from sea mammals in the oceans of Lenitan. They first began coming onto land because a mass extinction was going on in the oceans, (unknown what happened) and their food sources were running out. They were never "intelligent" while in the water so this is merely speculation and not known. After hundreds of years the Leniteans began becoming more and more advanced. Finally establishing cities and villages, they advanced along similar paths as humans. During their equivalent of the industrial revolution, they discovered many fossil fuels, such as "Tenin" (Coal), and Ninela (Oil). These substances helped them industrialize as a species, their life spans started going up. But as a result of the burning of fossil fuels their planet became very polluted. They also began making cities above the sea on stilts (like Oil platforms I guess But Larger). As they were starting to run out of room on the land). As Tenin and Ninela began to run out they started using more eco friendly sources of power, such as wind solar, geo thermal, and they also discovered fusion. (Cold Fusion). And they also began to fix their natural eco systems and their planets natural beauty. Cities being built underground and floating cities in the oceans became more common as they felt the need to preserve their environment, the majority of the Leniteans live underground or in the floating cities instead of conventional cities. About 250 years after their Industrial Revolution they discovered space travel, by sending up communication/weather/spy satellites. About another 200 years after their beginnings in space travel the Leniteans had discovered interstellar travel, but they have yet to use it as it is a very new technology.

Faction description: At first there were many 'nations' on the planet of Lenitan, slowly they started coming together and finally today they are one nation supporting the entire planet. The country is a Representative Democracy style government. With a Planetary Senate, representing the various areas. The people elect a head of state called a Commissioner of the State every 7 years.

OK, I guess "a couple days" was an exaggeration. Here goes nothing (I feel that I'm powergaming):

Spoiler :

Race Name: Za-Rak

Ruling Faction Name: One central government

Start position: AD1 and G4 (Advanced). Renamed Zeta and Beta, respectively. Zeta is the capital, Beta is a colony.

Physical description: Za-Rak resemble jellyfish. Their species originated in oceans, from which they evolved into the sea, land, and air creatures you see today. Za-Rak have the capability to absorb and release water into the atmosphere as necessary. When a Za-Rak is as anhydrous as possible, it is has an average density slightly less dense than air. This allows Za-Rak to push at the air with its tentacles, delivering enough force to launch the Za-Rak into the air approximately 1 m. When flying, Za-Rak clasps its tentacles together to push itself forwards and up, then glides for a few seconds, then repeats the process. This allows Za-Rak to travel up to 5 mph. When on land, Za-Rak prefer to travel by flight. However, in the cases that that is not possible, the Za-Rak can walk using their tentacles. When the Za-Rak walk, they sometimes appear to be gliding from place to place due to the way the tentacles move. In the water, the Za-Rak are most brilliant. There is where they have the great ancient wonders, and all of the theoretical calculations for their great inventions are performed underwater. Za-Rak underwater are able to move at a rate of up to 12 mph. Za-Rak are obviously not the best of creatures when it comes to physical agility.

Character description: Za-Rak are advanced people. They are capable of colonizing the universe and beyond, and they have some of the best technologies that can be found. Za-Rak prefer not to war, however they are willing to fight for peace and justice in the world.

Home system description: The closest planet from the sun, Ergo, is inhospitable for daily use due to its extreme heat and UV radiation. However, Za-Rak have set up an energy collecting base there, where energy is collected from the sun and sent to the other planets via satellite. Beyond this, however, there is not much that Ergo can do. The next planet from the sun is where Za-Rak first developed, Cogito. Cogito's oceans are packed with nutrients and foster life. One step further away from the sun comes Zarga, the largest planet in the system. Zarga’s atmosphere is composed of poisonous gases, so Za-Rak must wear a lightweight transparent coating on their head when on Zarga. Zarga is used for most of the testing and experimenting, while Cogito is primarily used for the theoretical thinking behind the inventions. For example, when the Za-Rak were designing the first space colonization vehicle, the engineers and physicists toiled on Cogito with equations and such and sent their results to Zarga via the satellite internet. The engineers on Zarga did the actual testing of the models, and at the end, the official launch was on Zarga. The last planet, Despara, is even more useless than Ergo, since it is basically a world of molten lava. Za-Rak hope that some use for Despara will arise.

Brief history: The Za-Rak originated in the salty oceans of Cogito. After several millennia slowly evolving, the first Za-Rak ventured onto the rocky shores. Over thousands of years, Za-Rak dared to go further and further onto land, and before long, the Za-Rak could float in the air as described. However, travel outside of the ocean was still regarded as very difficult, (similar to how humans today view climbing Mt. Everest). At this time in their history, Za-Rak were much more vicious and agile. They could travel very quickly to catch prey underwater. However, in a matter of merely 1000 years, the Za-Rak changed drastically, suddenly condemning their previous attitude towards violence and growing weaker and much more intelligent. Modern Za-Rak scientists believe this sudden change occurred due to the major fish plague that struck around this time. Fish populations plummeted, and Za-Rak were forced to eat more seaweed than they usually ate. Within 100 years of the start of this plague, the intelligent Za-Rak began to learn how to grow seaweed, thereby creating the first farm. This was the start of Za-Rak civilization. The Za-Rak soon began to organize themselves into a cohesive government, and before long, Za-Rak had colonized the entire planet. As of today, there are 700 million Za-Rak total which are distributed as follows:

58% live in the magnificent ancient underwater cities on Cogito.
12% live on the land on Cogito.
8% live on Zarga.
22% live on Beta

Faction description: The government of the Za-Rak is completely unified. There is one democratic capitalist government that supports individualism. The government is set up much like the government of the USA, with the added note that if enough signatures for or against a bill are gathered via petition, an official vote is held throughout the Za-Rak. If the vote passes, the change is made immediately.

Age: Advanced start. The Za-Rak feel ready to deal with the challenges presented to them by their deity. (AKA the GM).

Race Name: Liirr'il'lai* (Liirr is an accepted abbreviation from off-worlders, though technically it only refers to children and adolescence who have yet to bond with the il'lai)

Government: Representative democracy

Ruling Faction Name: Aih'tuila'liirr'il'lai** (aih'tuila is an accepted abbreviation)

* Lit. translation= black fungus people
** Lit. translation= the council of the black fungus people, note the 'the' is part of the name. Aih is a form of the definite article unique to names.

Start position: WX1 or, as the liirr'il'lai call it, Va meaning home.

Physical description: The liir'il'lai are a species not that different from humanity. They have two arms, two legs, one head, two eyes, two ears, one nose, one mouth etc. Just looking at them the only discernible differences would be: size, for the liirr'il'lai tend to be tall and thin by human standards; skin colour, which is very dark, as dark or darker than the darkest skinned humans and body hair or rather the complete lack of it. Liirr'il'lai possess flawlessly smooth skin that most women would die to have. This all comes from a rather interesting quirk of nature. At some point in the past the ancestors of the liirr'il'lai entered into a symbiotic relationship with a species of fungus, which gives them directly their dark and smooth skin and accounts for their body type.

This fungus grows naturally all over Va, along with other fungi and some rather funky plants, which I won't go into now. Animal life at a macroscopic level is quite rare with insects making up a vast majority of the population closely followed by other invertebrates then aquatic life then finally more complex land-based life. This is all to due with the sun Va. Va is an A-type main sequence star not a G, like our Sun, basically it is brighter and hotter and emitting more radiation than our own Sun. Most animals are black due to melanin or a similar pigment which protects against this increased radiation alone with various natural mechanisms such as Va possessing thicker atmosphere. The liirr'il'lai are at the distinct disadvantage of not naturally producing such pigments, they are not genetically capable of it. Scientists of the liirr'il'lai are still puzzled as to how such a species could possibly survive and evolve into the planet's dominant life-form. It is likely due to a combination of intelligence, luck and behaviour.

Anyway this disadvantage obviously began to hit home at some point in the past as did a disadvantage of the fungus. The fungus had been too successful and was running out of resources to survive. The fungus began to colonise living organisms in an attempt to survive, all exterminated it brutally except one. This led to the symbiotic relationship between the liirr'il'lai and the fungus. The liirr'il'lai provided certain nutrients, waste products of the liirr'il'lai, for the fungus and the fungus provided radiation protection and an extra source of energy, the fungus converts the higher energy EM radiation into energy in a process similar to photosynthesis, for the liirr'il'lai. This fungus symbiosis is their key difference to humans. The liirr'il'lai are also better adapted to night with better night vision, hearing and smell as well as an ability to perceive UV radiation and IR. However they suffer in more normal conditions away from the radiation of their homeworld because the fungus metabolises in a different manner producing toxic by-products as well as cutting off a constant supply of glucose and drawing away nutrients which the liirr'il'lai require as well. They are weaker in a head-to-head contest of strength but would have greater stamina and endurance to make up for it. Obviously their resistance to radiation is significantly higher as well.

Character description: The liirr'il'lai are deceptive. By this I mean their beautiful lyrical language which is completely fluid in nature and their tall, slender frames do not quite match with their fiery nature, fierce will and determination to survive. This will has carried them through devastating solar flares, wars, droughts, famines and other natural disasters time and time again. This will to preserve extents towards all life on Va, which they have a deep respect for, simply because it is so precious and they do not wish to see it lost. Plants and fungi are excluded to some extent because they are rather more abundant than animal life. They are an egalitarian race in that men and women are treated equally as are the various races of the liirr'il'lai, not that other species could detect the differences, and their social divisions are less than our own. They still possess them but again the subtleties would be lost on another species and they do not limit a determined liirr'il'lai but then an enraged Gornnix would not deter a liirr'il'lai. Apart from those characteristics, which are not completely universal anyway, the liirr'il'lai are unfettered in the nature of their characters and personalities.

Home system description: I've already covered both the star va and the planet Va (note the distinction afforded to the planet, it is the only name I have capitalised thus far). I will leave you Daft to determine the rest of the characteristics of the va solar system or rather your dice/RNG.

Brief history: The liirr'il'lai are older than most intelligent species, however the circumstances of their existence have made life more difficult for them than most. Several times in their oral and written histories the liirr'il'lai have had to claw their way back from the absolute brink of extinction, as close as a species can get and still survive, due to the antics of their sun. When their sun emits a solar flare one of two things happens. It occurs as a particularly bad solar flare by Earth standards, producing pretty light shows and wreaking havoc with electronics and communications or it occurs on a far bigger scale emitting huge radiation levels that destroy much of the life on Va. For this reason the liirr'il'lai only began to industrialise on a widespread scale one thousand years ago. Since then the liirr'il'lai have built carefully constructed cities both underground and on the surface designed to resist more life-destroying flares and consolidate their treacherous hold on life for the first time in their entire evolutionary history. For the last two hundred years since the great cities were completed and life on their homeworld has been made relatively safe from the threat of mass extinction, the cities were designed to be a completely enclosed ecosystem to allow the liirr'il'lai to preserve other life as well, they began to look upwards towards the stars. One hundred years ago the first interplanetary flights took place. Fifty years ago an experimental FTL drive system managed to propel a manned craft one light year from home and back in six months. Now the liirr'il'lai have perfected the technology, or they hope they have, and believe they are ready for their first inter-stellar voyage.

Faction description: The aih'tuila'liirr'il'lai is basically an elected legislative body which governs global affairs along with several other bodies. It is the British Parliament except there is no monarch. There are similar smaller bodies all the way down until each extended family forms its own tuila. These originate from ancient tribal councils which were set up to share the wisdom of the liirr'il'lai and work to cool their fiery nature before a skirmish or war broke out. There have been few wars in the history of Va thanks to these councils but when they did occur they were extremely bloody affairs with tribes literally fighting to the last man, woman and child and even countries when they formed fought to the death over issues. These councils are part of the way of life for the liirr'il'lai and to serve on one above that of a family council is considered a great honour, to serve on the aih'tuila'liirr'il'lai is the greatest aspiration of many young liirr'il'lai.

Only a rough draft :p

Spoiler :

Race Name: Iadb'lathetb (Unpronounceable)

Ruling Faction Name: Yvwvtlea (Unpronounceable.)

Start position: K3 (Thitelath)

Physical description: The modern day Iadb'lathetb descended from a specie of particular squid that swung through the primal rainforests of the planet Thitelath using their extremely muscular tentacles. Their intelligence arose from their need for coordinating many tentacles as well as the complex visual perception required for swinging from tree to tree.

Of course, the modern day Iadb'lathetb no longer has the ability to swing from tree to tree. What barbarian does that? Instead, the Iadb'lathetb "walks" on their 6 trunk-like tentacles whilst using the other 10 as fingers. Their tentacle-eye coordination skills, however, did not seem to fade away. The tentacles are also infamous for being stronger than it seems to be.

Character description: Curious by nature, the Iadb'lathetb does not hesitate to put its tentacles into any hole it sees (unfortunately almost causing the race to go extinct because of the ambushing giant Arachnid creatures native to Thitelath)

Home system description: Thitelath is an Earth Sized planet. 60% of the surface is covered by water.

Brief history:Curious minded by nature, the Iadb'lathetb quickly made many innovations. It took only 3000 years from their first recorded history to successfully develop and test their first thermonuclear weapon. The problem, however, emerged with their space program.

When the first nation of Thitelath launched their sattelite into orbit, almost every single nation, all 117 of them, followed suit with their own. A massive space race had begun. Long story short, however, a dispute over the colonization of the moon led to atomic weapons being launched. Billions of lives were lost and the orbit of Thitelath was covered with enough space debris to halt any space program for years to come when one nation detonated all the space stations as a form of "burnt space" policy. Cursing the skies, the Iadb'lathetb turned towards the sea instead and never again war amongst each other. They were surprisingly successful in this regard. The nations of Thitelath are now essentially one entity, the Yvwvtlea

Nearly 300 years since the incident, the public blacklash against space program is all but gone, and so is the debris surrounding the planet. Yvwvtlea recently announced its desire to restart its space program.

Faction description: A collection of various governments of Thitelath, Yvwvtlea is the only organization which is capable of representing the Iadb'lathetb race as a whole.

Age: Slow Start. Years spent on trying to colonize the seas instead of space means that the Iadb'lathetb have a great grasp over construction and materials science.

Race Name: Onid

Ruling Faction Name: The Alliance of Hanocked

Start position: G3 (Named Vinon)

Physical description: Humanoid in appearance, but with thin feathers instead of hair, and a long tail. The eyes are larger and can see in more detail at further distances than humans can, and they have night vision. They are generally nocturnal - they are adapted to the desert, and it is cooler during the night there. They are carnivores, hunting other animals that come out at night. Standing up right, and not counting the tail, they come to only about 3'7" in height, weighing at about 43 lbs. (35 in their natural gravity of 0.81 G). They are hermaphrodites, with both male and female organs. Their primary mode of communication is through movements, although vocalising is used just as often. Their sense of touch (they can also sense vibrations), taste and smell are more acute than a human's, but their hearing is about the same.

Spoiler Onid Picture using Spore :
CRE_Onid-0a73c417_ful.png

Character description: They are just a tribalistic as humans, the first inklings of civilisations setting up around oases, even if it was just a meeting spot for nearby troupes of four adults and however many children. Here, children would be swapped between troupes, ensuring genetic diversity. With everything else, they are selfish and uncongenial towards other troupes.

Within the troupes themselves, organisation is pretty simple: There are four (or more) adults and many children. At the start of each breeding season, there is one male, chosen in rotation. New adults are at the end of the cycle, coming in before the next time the currant male is in charge again. 'He' then impregnates the others. The children stay with the troupe until they are sexually mature, when they are either told to go and find a new troupe or swapped for another one. The flexibility of genders meant that gender stereotyping (and gender pronouns) does not exist: this time next year, the guy making all the rules will be pregnant and subservient to the next one. This has also affected how governments work - instead of there being one monarch, there would be four monarchs with one more powerful than the other three temporarily. This is the same for presidents and other forms of rulers - there would only be four. Actually, in many democratic republics, four years is the set term limit, letting all the individuals in the troupe rule for one year.

The Onid are very imaginative and single-minded. When one wants something, it will do anything it can to get it. This, coupled with the natural aggression and fearlessness that comes with being a carnivore and an Us vs. Them instinct, makes them prone to fight, perhaps more than humans, and even less likely to band together for very long.

Home system description: Vinon is a Yellow G3V star, younger (by a few 100 million years), bigger and brighter than Sol. Around it orbits 10 planets. The inner planets are small and rocky, barring the largest, Hanocked (the fourth). Four gas giants inhabit the outer system.

Hanocked is about 8/10 the size of Earth, with 8/10 gravity. Its axial tilt is 85.96 degrees, causing some quite violent seasonal changes. If the Onid farmed vegetables, they would have problems. There is no moon, the planet relying on the feeble pull from the sun, 1.04 AU away, for tides. Water coverage is 70.99. There are 399 23.6-hour days per year, with a leap year every three years.

Spoiler A satellite photo of Hanocked, edited to not have clouds :
Hanocked.png

Brief history: As mentioned above, civilisation started around oases, pools of life in a harsh desert. Here, information and children would be traded, as well as giving the sick and injured a place to heal. It is unsure where, but eventually, tools for hunting were invented, which lead to tools of war.

War. War came naturally to the Onid. Conflict drove invention. Everything invented had some practical use. Thankfully, things began to die down during this century. Satellites, their original use to spy on enemies, were sent to other planets. Not having a moon to land on, they put all their efforts in getting to another planet, the closest, Vihic, a small rocky planet. When one planet was conquered, they quickly went towards the others, their single-mindedness driving them. And now, they look to the stars.

Faction description: The Alliance is tenuous at best: a mixture of nations coming together simply so war does not escalate again. There are no leaders in the Alliance - it is supposed to be a self-supporting structure, each nation working together for the betterment of the Onid race.

Race Name: The Fa-Va [ |.| <)> in baton style low-talk, Coalition Syntax]

Ruling Faction Name: The Rimtreader Coalition of Poleis

Start position: One of the larger and hotter stars

Physical description: The canonical Fa-Va citizen without any esoteric App-limbs resembles a bromeliad (the green parts of a pineapple, or here) combined with the low slung frame and size of a bowing tiger. Two humps form a fore and aft body with a drooping abdomen between them. The aft hump is held half again as high as the forward, and a spine of whitish calcite plates each roughly the size of a playing card run from the peak of the forward body to the rear of the aft body. From this spine spill thousands of barbed tentacles, mostly coloured olive ranging to black, but with the occasional bright yellow or vivid red depending on the individual. The tentacles increase in size the further away from the spine and the largest ones wrap under the main body mass and serve as locomotor limbs. The calcite plates of the spine are also derived from the tentacle growths and serve as the Fa-Va's eyes, similar to the stony eyes of the extinct earth Trilobite phyla, multiple sweeps of the environment providing a full and crisp hemispheric view, if of low resolution compared to human eyes. From the apex of the rear hump burst a number of more specialised eyes and other organs; long calcite rods acting as telescopes of various sorts, and a set of extremely long, whiplike, and brightly coloured tentacles acting as both ears and communication systems. Forward of the fore-hump lies a rosette of tentacles adapted for object manipulation, studded with smaller calcite lenses providing short range and microscopic vision. Underneath all the tentacles a sticky black main body mass run through with yellow and brown fibres can be occasionally observed, though the Fa-Va prefer to keep this covered, and some have flattened leaf like tentacles to ensure privacy. Average individuals weigh some 200 kg, though this can range from specialists at a quarter that to huge Kings as large as elephants. Movement is a very smooth but slow glide using hundreds of limbs, but they can raise and extend their forward hump and its grabbing limbs like a biting cobra. The Fa-Va evolved in an extremely hot environment with average water temperatures of some 115C (high atmospheric pressure meant this was below the local boiling point), and thus although they originated from the same panspermia as Earth-life they took a very different evolutionary path. With things being too hot for lipid cell membranes to develop the black core of a Fa-Va is actually a single vast RNA-protein and tar based meta-system; genetic storage, metabolism, information processing, and thought all going on within the same substrate. The tentacles and eyes that emerge from this gloop aren't organs in the earth-life sense but rather salt-protein 'supra-molecular machines', and the modern Fa-Va can grow and select new limbs, senses and processors as easily as one might download Apps for an iPhone. The price paid for this tremendous flexibility is that their conciousness is running in a solely chemical substrate rather than the vastly faster electro-chemical nervous system of earth metazoans. Thus whilst a human has their internal mental picture of the world updated every 3 milliseconds and has a thought every few seconds or so, a Fa-Va's sensorium updates every few seconds and thought occurs in bursts every dozen seconds or so.

This isn't a great picture as the tentacles are meant to be pointed and barbed, and I didn't draw all the little ones, but whatevers.

Character description: The post Mindwar Fa-Va as exemplified by the Coalition are introspective and a little bit paranoid. They are very accepting of differing points of view, but are extremely adverse to proselyting, seeing destruction of mindstate as something worse than physical destruction. Surprisingly romantic for a race without hormones (probably due to recreational unmarked fiction being a common pastime passed down from parent to child) the like great displays of emotion and preservation of original biospheres and cultures. The primary civilisation focus is spreading across the galaxy but at a low density, and adapting to local conditions rather than planetforming, attempting to increase the diversity of subcultures and stop the overcrowding that lead to the Mindwar.

Home system description: The bright star Si-Si-Si [ .|. .|. .|. ] has a huge number of comets and small ice bodies, three large gas giants (two with spectacular ring systems), and one large rocky world Ha-Fa-Ho [ \.. |.| ../ ] with roughly 150% of earths radius and 90% of Earths density. A very dense and oxygen rich atmosphere is heated immensely by the star to produce tremendous storm systems and vast flooded jungle analogs. One tremendous continent stretches from the south pole to the equator, taking up a whole quarter of the globe, whilst five Australia sized continents and tens of thousands of islands speckle the rest of the equatorial zone and northern hemisphere.

Brief history:
The Fa-Va are perhaps exceptional in developing agriculture, cities, and sailing before becoming sapient. The first appreciable structures were constructed some 17 million years ago by what modern Fa-Va call 'Golems' – physically similar to a modern Fa-Va and able to perform and learn complex tasks but lacking self awareness and symbolic language. The Fa-Va lineage's ability to directly exchange experience in mind-to-mind communication (temporarily linking the body cores and having thought processes flow from one to the other) allowed these beasts to coordinate and progress from littoral and riverine scavengers to packs who managed groves of edible plants and built walls and storage centres to keep foes out. Gradually the evolution of better food plants lead to greater population densities, which kicked off the development of plagues/viral ideas (for a Fa-Va they are the same thing) that began parasitising the Golem farmers. After tens of thousands of years of booms and busts a new mental processing structure arose, one that could check the rest of the minds thoughts, and those thoughts and social relationships coming from outside, in effect an overseeing mental eye...that in time became an 'I'. The newly concious Fa-Va spread across the world destroying and converting the Golems, their symbolic language and higher levels of coordination and self interest making them vastly superior to the unconscious. The appearance of intelligent civilisation all over the equatorial in just a few generations (rather than the thousands seen where humans strolled out of Africa) created a tremendous amount of social stress with every village being its own kingdom with its own low talk language (and these languages weren't like differing human languages as they varied even in the mechanism of communication; some waving batons about, others flashing lights or using motile carriers, still others using aural communication with organs built like drums or violins). The next few thousand years are generally referred to as the Coalescent era, culminating in an orgy of violence with the Language Wars. Subsistence farmers in the main couldn't afford more than one or two language brains, so river based trading settlements warred over which communication method the peripheral harvesters should use, for using a particular cities method would bind them to that trade network.
Eventually however increasing agricultural and aquacultural surpluses allowed the development of mercantile and diplomatic castes and the trade networks stopped their monoglot of conflict and communications equilibrated across geographic zones. The distinction now became militaristic-agricultural jungle polities and trading cities on the coast and rivers, and the difference between two philosophies of mental efficiency – Assimilatory and Specialists. Due to the difficulties of bandwidth with low talk, the fear of mindrape during brain-brain communication, and the general slow reaction speed of the Fa-Va those groups that could react more quickly would have a decisive advantage in battle and trade; Assimilatory groups attempted to make every individual in a polity think as similarly as possible to prevent misunderstanding and easy communication (as if you thought pretty much the same as the other guy you could guess what they meant or were going to do more easily), whilst the Specialists encouraged individuals to develop different mental architectures focused on particular tasks. Generally the Jungle states were Assimilatory and the trading cities Specialists, but there were many exceptions. It is at this time that the great tradition of Rhetorical Warriors developed in the coastal cities, disputes between clans and interests settled by two duellists battling over a direct mind link.
This interstitial era ended with the development of metal working and winged communication subunits, both giving massive advantage to the Assimilatory Jungle states who soon conquered and converted the riverine trading cities and Specialist Jungle states. The Specialists survived as coastal and island polities where Assimilatory tendencies were at a disadvantage and as lineages providing particular services to the Metal Mind-Empires main body of individuals. Over time the Metal Mind-Empires expanded and fought till there was only one per biome unit whilst the Specialists developed advanced sailing techniques and a trading system that wrapped around the equator. The Captains to these ships became a special executive class, the forerunners of the modern Kings, and their quick decision making and fierce loyalties allowed the Specialist polities to regain some ground.
The development of industry lead to a time of fragmentation and chaos. The Metal Mind-Empires, having imported systems of logical inquiry from the coastal polises, began to exploit local energy resources in the terms of coal beds and hydropower, not realising this would be the doom of their current social structure. The rapid increase in population and the strain of having a single Assimilatory mental structure for both industry and agricultural military caused their ancient mental modes to break apart into new states as a patchwork of agricultural lands, mercenary companies and industrial conurbations resembling renaissance Italy writ large. Steam boilers and tapping geothermal energy allowed the Specialists to colonise the islands of the Northern hemisphere that were preciously too cold for habitation (ironically a Fa-Va would arrive in orbit well before one got to the highlands of the massive southern polar continent). The office of Captain having evolved into the institution of City-Kings as central executives. In an attempt to remake their states into the old glories the philosophers of the new land empires experimented with numerous new mind-states, like implanted social concious units and group minds. Their rapid sharing of mentalities in violation of the old taboos unfortunately setting the stage for the Mindwar. The mixing produced new types of mental virus, essentially personalities that could infect another individual, and these plagues spread across the equatorial continents turning hundreds millions into zombies at best and the slaves of a sociopathic group mind at worst. The century of the Mindwar saw 90% of Fa-Va population die as the plagues fought and raped each other, and it was only brought to a close when the relatively unaffected cities of the Northern islands began the mass release of assassination viruses (based on their old political traditions) that targeted the patterns of plagues. In the aftermath the Coalition imposed a common mental syntax on the equatorial survivors and began to explore local space in an attempt to restore their damaged society and create backups against such a tragedy happening again.

Faction description: The Coalition of Poleis of the Rimtreader Archipelago are the dominant scientific and cultural unit of Ha-Fa-Ho, imposing a language and political hegemony over the rest of the planet thanks to surviving the Mindwar mostly intact and having control of the primary satellite communication network. Ruled by the council of Kings (specialised executive caste) and their advisors the other states of the homeworld are clients of the Rimtreaders.

An unarmed but capable scout ship. Fa-Va ships generally have computers to compensate for their crews slow reaction speeds.

Note on Language; as you can guess the Coalition syntax language is based on the three bations that can each have six positions \ . | ( < / that combine to create 729 symbols, though due to symbol degeneracy there are only about 600 meanings. Human xenolinguists assigned a short sound to each of the six hundred pretty much a random, but for ease of use we'll use their transliterations of the words. ( and ) and < and > have the same literal meaning but apply emotional qualifiers to what's being said – for example |.| <)>, |.| >)>, and |.| <(< all mean the race name Fa-Va, but the first is neutral, the second prideful and the last full of shame.

Now that's an interesting alien.
