-Prethread- NCNESIOT: Blackened Skies

Great, now I'll have to go through the Internet to look for a new flag.

EDIT: So, after some playing with Flagmaker and discussions with the resident flag-Nazi, JohannaK, I've come to this! These beauties! Or monsters. Depends. (Credit goes to Megs for giving me this idea, despite the fact I didn't see the light for some time.)

(So, very sorry.)

*eye twitches as I desperately try to ignore the bad vectoring in Tolni's Civil Ensign flag*

...anyway, an update! Nuke and I are polishing the stats and we're putting the last pieces in place over the next few days. We should be ready for a launch soon, so thanks to all of you for being so patient! You are my heroes. <3

The Han Republic

Yellow represents the desert and the Yellow River, Blue the sea and the Yangzi, and red represents China itself and it's people, the Han. It's rotated 180º as a symbolic rejection of Western imposition.

A few more to tide us over

Hellenic Republic of Greece

Spoiler :

The modern Greek state can trace its origins to the Greek War of Independence in the 1830s, freeing the people from the oppressive rule of the Ottoman Turks. Needing to fund their war effort, the Greeks took massive loans from Britain and France, and though victorious, Greece was soon swimming in a mountain of debt, unable to pay its soldiers or its credit back. The Greek King Otto I would try to distract popular sentiment with wars with the Ottomans, but British blockades would force their end as they crippled the Greek economy.

With a major economic recession in the late 1870s though, Greece at last declared bankruptcy and the people, tired of the wasteful spending of their King, drove him out and established a new republic. However, this republic proved to be little better, and soon the military took over de facto rule. Elections simply became the rubber stamping of military rule until the Glorious Revolution of 1916 at last ended the cyclical repression by the military.

The Hellenic Republic’s stability was boosted with strong economic growth in the early 20s, however the significant reduction of trade with Turkey and the increased prominence of Italian goods in Greece has sparked a minor recession. The Greek economy is still very small and backwards, and unemployment has spiked. Worse still, the Greek economy is mostly dominated by families with aristocratic and military connections, making things worse for the country.

The Republic is currently ran by a coalition government of the Liberals and Conservatives who control a plurality of the seats. The Liberals are the dominant power and are still opposed to the return of the monarch, the dream of the Conservatives. The Socialists will continue to gain power though in this current state, and the fascists are gaining popularity within the military. Many fear that Greece is the weak link in Europe, and that its unstable situation could restart the horrors of the 1910s….

Kingdom of Serbia

Spoiler :

The Kingdom of Serbia was a state surrounded by two great empires of the 19th century, though with both empires seemingly in decline, the Serbian people were eager to make efforts to free their Slavic brothers, and had a powerful ally in the form of the Russian Empire. However, the cause for Slavic liberation suffered, both with the rise of the German Empire and the checking of Russian influence by Britain. Serbia saw minor gains from the Ottomans during the 19th century, but it was not until the complete collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 20th century and the defeat of the Ottomans by Italy that Serbia was able to put its ambitious plans to work. As the Austrians collapsed, nationalist rebels rose and Serbia allied with the Slavic ones and crushed the others. Now, with Serbia at last ascendent in its homeland, all of the Balkans beckons. Perhaps the Slavs in Bulgaria should be brought into the fold? And why stop there? With Russia by her side, might they both dominate the entire Balkans?

The Kingdom of Romania

Spoiler :

One of the first beneficiaries of the Ottoman decline, the Kingdom of Romania had its foundations when the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia were united in a personal union and the Kingdom’s crown given to a member of the German Hohenzollern family. The Kingdom became a stalwart German ally until their interests diverted in the Balkans. Romania came to the Ottomans defense and captured Bulgarian territory. Romania failed however to defeat the Hungarians to reclaim long lost territory, and did not dare try to reclaim Bessarabia from Russia. Romania has rebuilt its strength though through the 20s, and though its army and industry stands ready, many wonder if the King can still marshall His subjects to his will…

The Kingdom of Bulgaria

Spoiler :

The unified Bulgarian Kingdom was formed in the 1880s amidst great promise, with dreams of expanding their state further and further at the expense of the Ottoman Turks. Bulgarians dreamed of an empire that would include the Second Rome, Thrace and more, but the dreams remained just that: dreams. During the Balkan War though, Bulgaria’s attempts to expand were defeated by the combined might of Romania and the Ottomans. A brief foray during the Italo-Ottoman War was unsuccessful too, due to the tenacity of the Ottoman defenders, the pullback of the Italians, and the mobilization of the Romanians. Bulgarian morale dropped significantly, and worse still Bulgaria did not see the great economic gains made in the 1920s. Bulgaria is now a state far overshadowed by its neighbors, and even worse, could very well be the first target of a resurgent, expansionist Turkish state. Will this state that once showed such promise fall once more to the Turks? Or will someone take up the Bulgarian mantle and guide them to victory?

Each of the flags reproduces a trigram corresponding to an element:

The bars in the national flag form the trigram Qián, corresponding to the Sky or Heaven, reinforcing the Republic's Han supremacist sentiment.

In the Army Ensign, they form trigram Kūn, or Earth.

In the Navy Ensign, the bard produce trigram Kǎn, associated to Water.

Finally, the Air Force Ensign composes trigram Xùn, that represents Wind.

Each trigram corresponds to a different season according to the King Wen arrangement.

The Sublime State of Turkey

Spoiler :

Once thought as the most powerful nation in the world, the Ottoman Empire by the end of the 19th century was a shadow of its former self. Lagging behind in industrialization compared to the other European powers, its literacy declining, and political unrest on the rise, losing territory after territory. While victorious in the Crimean War, it came as a pyrrhic victory and showed the Ottomans were dependent on the British and French to preserve themselves. This defeat did not even slow their decline, seeing the loss of Greek territory, the suzerainty over Romania, Bulgaria, and finally, Albania and the Aegean islands in the war with Italy. Spurred on by these defeats, a group of young, liberal officers created a coup that established the First Republic of Turkey in 1918.

The new republic was immediately beset on by all sides. Cosmopolitan elites clashed with the rural peasants, and ideological clashes between socialist, liberal, and reactionary militias echoed through the countryside. Rebellious Arabs and Armenians though stirred up a new passion though within the Turkish militias, awakening a nationalist pride within the regiments. Many of these regiments were able to find common cause against the rebellions. It would only be through the intervention of the military that a mass slaughter of Armenians would be prevented.

By 1921, many of these militias had formed into a greater organization, known as the National Turkish Front. Their numbers were swelled by reductions from the Army and saw officers, particularly those who felt more loyalty to the former Osman Dynasty than this new republic, flocking to inflate the NTF’s ranks. Due to the nature of the Turkish constitution and the stranglehold that urban elites held over Turkish politics, the government took a decidedly liberal outlook. The NTF’s ideology of promotion of ultra nationalist tendencies, an end to the republic, and new style of corporatism, an ideology that would eventually gain the moniker “Fascist”. Standing in the 1922 elections, the NTF won the popular vote but their party found themselves shut out of power at the expense of the host of liberal delegates from the cities. Furious, the NTF militias refused to take their seats and instead decided to overthrow the government. A march on both Constantinople and Ankara saw support for the republic evaporate, and the Sublime State of Turkey was established.

The new Turkish state has greatly reorganized itself, reorganizing the military and beginning the first major Turkish industrialization program. Though Turkey has yet to reach the levels of the European economies, Turkey is well recovered from the Balkan and Italian Wars. With the Arabs and Armenians subdued, and the liberals near broken, Turkey can look outside its borders once more. There are dreams of subduing Bulgaria, Romania, even Greece and Serbia once more. Perhaps even, if Turkey is truly favored, their armies might march past the gates of Vienna, surpassing even the great Ottoman Empire of old.

Nuke, Hellenic Republic of Greece seems a bit strange name to me, because Hellenic and Greece are the same word in Greek, so it is like, for example, having a state being called "American Republic of America". Keeping just Hellenic is better, because that is the name used by us Greeks.

A direct transcription from Greek script for the Greek name for Greece is Ellas.

Thanks. We'll talk about it; "The Hellenic Republic" sounds good to me though.

Advance Australia Fair only became the national anthem in 1984, and wasn't well known much before 1950, while the original lyrics includes verses such as:

When gallant Cook from Albion sailed,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Til he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
"With all her faults we love her still"
"Britannia rules the wave."
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

And:

While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England soil and Fatherland,
Scotia and Erin fair,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

The notion that this could be a rallying cry for Republicanism... is farcical.

Australians are weird like that. :mischief:
