Prices are insane

It depends on if you don't want to take the hit in graphics. The streamers said the game looks amazing on a 4k monitor on their setup in Firaxis HQ. From what I seen with all the detail on these maps, I'm certain this game is a resource hog. There's a reason why the are limiting map size and number of players for multiplayer. We'll be lucky even if single player has huge maps as large as Civ 6. I hope it does, but I'm skeptical.
They limited the map sizes for cross-play with the Switch. Ed said so in a recent YouTube interview. So, as I said, I expect the minimum PC requirements to be quite modest.

It would be interesting to know what hardware they used then, I'm pretty sure it will run on many, many PC, but obviously you won't be able to run at the maximum level of details on any PC. Also, if they use a similar engine (really hope they've fixed it then !), lowering graphics was helping to run larger maps on Civ6.

That's not really following.

"Running this on minimum spec was not low enough for the Switch so we've had to add artificial carve outs to prevent it getting overwhelmed" doesn't inspire me with confidence that it's going to be particularly modest. Especially since they were content with the turn processing times on the Switch for Civ6 that measured in minutes.

I'd expect that I'd have to upgrade my computer to run this game satisfactorily.

Not much facts on the subject at this time. But in one of the streams or interviews it was revealed that firaxis themselves are now accounting more of performance stuff than previously. They said that they are designing more than ever different graphic assets so that it can run on lower plaforms.

To extrapolate from here I could speculate that this same could apply to other things. They themselves are trying to optimize for lower plaforms too.

You're just speculating, though.

Ed very clearly said that they wanted everyone to have the same experience at launch, so they made sure that the game would run well on all of the supported platforms. The PC version can obviously look better, but you don't have to turn up the graphics settings. And the PC version will eventually be able to handle larger maps and higher player counts, but you don't have to play with those settings.

Of course it's speculating, every thing is speculating at the moment. The fact is though that they're carving up the game and making parts inaccessible on some platforms (I've used plural, we just know about the switch so far, that in aware of) to make it feasible to play. That's good enough reason for me to think that I'll probably have to upgrade my computer to run it at a decent level. That's nothing special - that's more or less something I'd be pleasantly surprised by if I didn't have to for a 2025 game.

Again, if they're limiting what you can do on the Switch on order to make it work, then it's not likely to be so modest that upgrading isn't out of the question for machines that aren't regularly upgraded as a matter of course.

Again, they're limiting the game for everyone on every platform in order to accommodate the Switch.

Pretty sure they said they're limiting the Switch capacity specifically. I don't remember the numbers, but the Switch can't go above 5 players ever play larger than Standard map - on the PC you can.

I'll probably pre-order the basic game to get Tecumseh, and wait for the DLCs to come along before deciding if they're worth it. In the meantime, I'm sure I'll have plenty of leaders to try out and civ swapping to do with the base game before those DLC are anything close to being a 'needed' thing.
This is my plan. The only difference between regular and deluxe is the ambiguous DLC that we all know will be provided for sale later.

Now the question is: PS5 or PC? This is clearly a PC game, but the allure of owning a retail disc is very strong. I have to wait for console footage to decide, but I found Civ 6 UI to be fine on console when I played that demo.

Yeah, my gut take is that the DLC is quite expensive, that eventually it will go on sale enough to get it all cheaper than the pre-order deluxe price. It wouldn't surprise me if they do end up adding in more to the deluxe version (they did in 6, I think? The pre-order included a handful of DLC but when you priced them out it was barely a discount and I feel they added in an extra DLC pack or two to those who has pre-purchased the initial pass). But I'm also assuming that at some level, they may have a simple "upgrade to deluxe" bundle price that if I want those DLC earlier I can get that too.

And if not, worst case you buy things individually later and it's a 5 or 10$ contribution to Firaxis, which isn't the end of the world if they convince me enough to buy it.

This is it - £90 for the Deluxe Edition is just more than I am prepared to pay for any game upfront. It is significantly more than I paid for the Deluxe Edition of Civ 6, even after adjusting for inflation (that was £56, or £74 in today’s money). The Founder’s Edition is just ridiculous, and I am completely uninterested in spending money on cosmetic content or alternate leader personas (a feature of Civ 6 I never used).

If I enjoy the game, I’ll buy any relevant DLC later. When I know exactly what I am getting for my money, and more importantly, when I know I am interested in playing the game itself!

...how the hell did you get the Deluxe Edition of VI for more than a quarter off compared to what I paid for it?

I believe UK Deluxe digital was £69,99 during actual release. Using your own inflation rate: 1,32 * £69,99 = £92,49.

Maybe you got your after release with some discount? Maybe do the same now?

I got it for 90 euros as a preorder, which according to this source would translate to roughly 80 pounds.

I preordered from Green Man Gaming.

...so by preordering from another website you could get a 33% discount? Are you sure you didn't purchase the regular version for 56 pounds? That matches up pretty closely (although not quite perfectly) with the conversion rate between currencies at the time. Correction, I thought you said 54 pounds, 56 is just a bit too much off to be considered a match - although it could still be explained as the variety you'd expect between currency conversions.

It‘s interesting that this hasn‘t been mentioned (at all?) in this thread so far, but you will probably be able to preorder a package like the founders or deluxe $20+ off by buying on other sites than Steam (without going into the grey market) and/or discounts from streamers or similar - if you wait until January. It was like that with civ VI and with many other games in the last years. I don‘t see why 7 would be different.

This is what I’m hoping for ;)

I don't know if that will be the case...

The discounts with VI on sites like GMG were fairly immediate. Anecdotally, I think preorder prices for games across storefronts generally don't change.

In other words, my guess is what we see is what we'll get in terms of preorder pricing.

Green man gaming already had small discount on founders at least. 11% if I recall correctly.

I did not take it as prepurchase refunds are much unclearer there.
