Question: Has anyone ever built the iron works and how often?

In the 2 years I've been playing Civ3, I've only managed to have coal and iron close together on one occasion, but if I recall correctly, the city I put there rocked!
Pity it never happened again, though everytime I discover steam power, I always have that fleeting moment when I think of the possibilities... You know what I mean, like when you buy a lottery ticket and you know there's no way in hell you're gonna win, but still keep fantisizing about it. :crazyeye:

I can recall getting it at least five times, maybe more. The more land you take the better your chances. In my last game as germany I was making one turn panzers. IMO the staute of zues is harder to come by.

In vanilla and PTW, yes, I'd get the chance to build Iron Works more often than not. In C3C, so far, never. :(

I had the possibility twice in perhaps 50 games that I played until the industrial age (I usually give up or claim victory much sooner!)
The first time, the city was very distant and so corrupt that it would have taken centuries to build it.
But recently, I have built it in a decent city, and it gave a good boost.
However, it can only affect the game balance if you get to build it in a core metropolis.
It would be really nice in a one city challenge... ;)

Mainly on World maps, where there is usually an iron works city in Europe.

I guess im lucky... i get around 1 every 2 games. Last game it was in Amsterdam :goodjob:

I've been able to build it about 1 out of 2 times whenever my games make it to the Industrial Age. Of course, I play fast, loose, and ridiculously aggressive, so most of my games don't make it to that age and those that do I have so much territory that my chances of having a city with iron and coal are high.

I also ascribe to the 2-square city placement, which makes it more likely that your coal and iron will overlap. Getting the Ironworks in a core city is the best, it can mean early industrial age 100+ production per turn. One way to maximize your chance of getting it in a core city is making sure your forbidden palace is near iron deposists.

So far as I can remember, on world maps I can usually seem to build the works near Pennsylvania, US too.

In the Demogame one of the core cities had iron. Quite a bit later (well after Steam) a coal resource appeared. Just in time fro Christmass actually. We must have been very bad.

That city built the Iron Works and is currently producing 120 shields per turn.

For my own games, in both GOTM 37 and 38 I managed to build an Iron Works. In both cases it was in a city that the AI built and I captured.

I could build it in a lot of games. But most of the time it is a very corupt city with only 1 shield per turn so I don't build it. I think I've built it maybe 8 to 10 times in hundreds of games. Also a lot of my games are over before I can build it. (war win in the MA).

Usually iron works cities I get aren't too close to me, because in order to get coal, you are most likely going to find it near jungle, and many of my games I take better land. In my first demigod game, though, I was on flood plains (lots of food), and had mountains and hills (iron and coal). Needless to say, that city was huge in size and production (and was my 2nd city, so low corruption).

I would say that I get an IW city around 1/10 of my games, maybe 1/8, but usually not that high.

I have gotten three or four in vanialla, but so far none in C3C. But, when I had them Iron Works, I completely rocked. All the Indutrial and Modern Wonders were mine.

its such a big swing.. and all it takes is for resouces to appear close together. Its true since i got conquests it seems to have become so much rarer.. infact only if i set it up in the editor...

Out of the 5 Multiplayer games I've played I've gotten it one time :)

Out of all the others...well, I haven't played very much civ. so I don't know.

Once in Vanilla, maybe out of 25 games. If you play large maps, it's almost impossible to get (see my tittle)

hehe MtG rocks

Once or twice with Vanilla, once with plain PTW, once with PTW-DYP, never with plain C3C, and once, in my capital, in C3C-RaR. 140 shields per turn.

I have never done it, in any version of the game. I think I saw it on a city's build list once, but either I didn't know what it was, or that city was producing at such a high rate already (me being a miner and all) that the pollution rate would've been suicidal.

Also, if it were one of the original cities, therefore low corruption too, and you're already producing MA in 2 turns and have already a bountiful harvest of MA's etc., what's the point in making them in 1 turn, just to throw more pollution in your face?
