Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Every Stable, whenever and wherever built.

Damn, then I think my game is bugged. In two recent games I'd won the quest and chosen the food reward, and I can remember in both games checking my stables in certain cities and finding they aren't giving me food anymore. :/

Did you check them after your Stables obsoleted (Rocketry, I think)?

I seem to recall seeing the same thing, and long before rocketry. I think the bonus only applies to stables in existence when you complete the quest.

Noble is the closest difficulty to being equal but the players advantages of specialization, war and micromanagement can still easily overwhelm the dumb AI on Noble.

As said, noble is pretty much equal. The usual way is keep moving up difficulty until you fine the level of challenge that is right for you. After you play a few games at that level you will probably want to move up again.

Come back here to ask questions and get hints, it is a great reasorce.

But mostly I wanted to say:

Creative (pretty obvious I think), and I'd say Industrious (you're going to want wonders). That's Louis, IIRC, and that's about the only time you'd want an Observatory that provides Artist Pollution in your Science City.

In no particular order as these 4 are all great.
  • Industrious as wonders have a high :culture: output on their own and some have benefits that will prove very useful for culture wins (sistine in particular).
  • Financial as the added :commerce: will get you the techs you need sooner and can then be converted into :culture:.
  • Spiritual for the :hammers: savings on the load of temples your going to want as well as civic swapping, building structures is going to be important here so OR is great and lets you build missionaries without monasteries, slavery is always handy and your going to need a GA farming strategy so Caste and Pacifism are very, very useful. Plus Spiritual can help you stay alive.
  • Philosophical for your Great Artists.
Creative isn't very good despite appearances, I think its very unlikely to account for even 2% of the total culture you actually need

what is the barbs' rule for entering your borders? I heard something like when every civ on your continent had two cities?

no screenies, photobucket is down

Does the save look alright? It's a bit weird...

Also, I've asked this before but how the hell do I make a sign/mark? I'll write it down somewhere...

To make a sign, you can press Alt+S, or you can press F11 for globe view and click the strategy layer button (just above the minimap) which will allow you to do the same. You can also draw lines using the strategy layer.

I was told long ago that they start entering your borders when the number of cities on the land mass = n*2, where n is the number of civs on the landmass. So, more or less, when everyone has a second city. But if, say, you share the continent with Brennus and Gandhi, and you have 1 city, Brennus has 2, and Gandhi has 3 (3*2=6), the barbs will start coming by to party. In other words, you can't hold off the barb invasions by waiting to found your 2nd city, especially since the AI loves to REX. .

Agreed, the +2:culture: from Creative doesn't itself help a whole lot in this respect. However, Creative also gives you cheaper Libraries and Theaters. Theatres in particular are useful because they allow you to run artists and increase the impact of the culture slider on your happy cap.

Also, two Creative leaders, namely Zara and Pericles, have UBs that can be very helpful in pursuing a culture victory.

Hmm. Does the size of "n" change according to the number of live vs. dead opponents if you wipe out your neighbors with immortals or other early units before they get their second cities?

(BTS) So I founded confuciansim, and then I sent missionaries to a foreign continent and spread to like 6 opponent cities. Then I used a spy to influence religion to change their religion to my state religion (conf.)

I expected to have line of sight in all their cities that have confucianism but I don't. I seem to remember this feature from playing vanilla. Why can't I see their cities?

This feature is present in vanilla but was removed from BTS. Instead there is espionage. You have to accumulate espionage points against your opponent sufficient to allow you to see the cities like you could in vanilla. The amount varies, depending on the city and civ. Click the espionage button in the upper right corner of the main screen to look at the espionage screen. There you can see how many points you need, how many you have, and how many you are generating. You can also allocate a share of the points you are generating, using this screen, to whichever opponents you want.

I should add to this that sharing state religions with the target civ and/or having your state religion in the target city reduces the cost of espionage missions. So while you won't be able to see their cities like in Vanilla, you'll be more easily able to see their cities using espionage than if you hadn't spread your religion there.

So it seems I'm unable to further spread Sid's Sushi and Mining Inc. - the button is grayed out and I have no reason why; ideas?

Edit:To my own cities.

Two guesses:

A) You're in State Prop.

B) The cities you are trying to spread to do not have access to the required resources.
