Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Quick Question: Is it possible for an AI to be in WHEOOHRN the turn you meet him/her? Just asking since in my current game I met a WHEOOHRN Montezuma the instant I met him.
I don't see why not--WHEOOHRN just means the AI is preparing for war. It doesn't necessarily mean it's preparing for war against you (not everything is about you, you know :p;)).

On the other hand, knowing Monty, yeah, he probably wants to kill you the moment he meets you. It's just how he rolls.

As Sis said, nothing forces good ol'Monty to be gearing against you ... and this obviously suposing that he is not already in war with someone else you might have not contacted yet.

Said that, I already had my share of times with monty starting to gear against me at 1st contact , especially when he is in a diferent continent only reachable post-astro.

Are there any strategy guides on here that deal with the National Park? It's been bothering me for a while that I don't really know what to do with it.

I have only used the National Park once, in a game where I found a heavily-forested city fairly late in the game when there was no need to chop (and where Universal Suffrage took care of most infrastructure). Having a city with lots of free specialists wasn't so useful at that point, since it took a while to build the buildings that let me actually run the specialists (wasn't in Caste System anymore). But it's conceivable that under a few circumstances an NP could be useful to
  • Become a 2nd GP farm, in general
  • Run several merchants to generate late-game income
  • Run lots of engineers hoping to get a Great Engineer for some late-game corporation (with the appropriate buildings of course: forge, factory, and industrial park if I recall correctly).
  • A couple of people claim it's valuable for a Once-City Challenge and so avoid chopping trees early, but lots of other people say avoiding chopping is a bad idea and the NP has no trees to work with.
.

There is the other benefit of NP: the cut of pop :yuck: out .That alone makes it extremely valuable for a OCC ( where you normally can't buy much of resources and where you don't have much of them to begin with :D ) . In fact the only downside of NP for OCC ( besides using one of the NW slots ) is that it locks coal out, making coal plans useless...

I would concur, especially since the NP cuts off your access to coal, so building it in a OCC would potentially reduce the city's productivity in the late game--which could be kind of important. It's also counter-productive to combine it with the Ironworks (again, because it eliminates access to coal which boosts the IW's productivity.

In some games I don't bother with it, but sometimes I'll have a city with decent food and some forests left and I'll use the post-it tags to remind myself to build the NP there and to leave the forests for preserves. In a long game I can sometimes get one or even two extra GP from that city.

Anybody know off-hand how to calculate how many hammers a Great Engineer will provide towards a world wonder that it cannot fully build? Its based on city size, right? How does it adjust for game speed?

Or if you can point me to the right place to find this info...

Thanks in advance!

Thank you very much! I actually searched for the last time someone (you) posted that formula but had no luck. Sorry to be a bother.

First up, G'Day all (yeah, I'm an Aussie).

I'm a new poster (obviously), stumbled across the site a few weeks ago hunting up info on Civ 5 (as I guess a lot of us are hungry for), and have devoured a few mods here once I discovered them - in particular Quot Capita and Varietas Delectat. Great work guys! I love them. They reflect so much of what I guess a lot of us personally hunger to explore in Civ.

Well, I've loved them up to a point - I've had some technical issues in playing with them. I wonder if this is the right thread to ask technical questions about the mods, or whether i should be posting (and hopefully not pestering) on the actual mod threads. Any suggestions.

Thanks,

Rols

First off, welcome to civfanatics!:band::dance::banana:

Questions about mods are best asked in the respective thread or subforum of the mod, but I see that you've already chosen that option. The modcreator of course knows the problems with the mod best.

By the way, it's generally frowned upon to post a similar post in several forums. In this case, it's not an issue as I noticed it. However you could get a situation where several people are posting answers while not knowing that the question was already answered elsewhere.

Hey everyone, first post, LONGTIME lurker.

I'm a vassle in a PBEM game (Civ 4 BTS). I want out and I'm pretty sure they do too, but they don't know how. How would I, or they, go about breaking it?

Thanks in advance!

Didn't know where to ask so I figured I'd ask here since it's a very active thread...

I still didn't find a suitable BtS mod for me that fills my requirements.
I would want a mod that has; revolutions, barb civs, ethnic city styles/units etc, and at least as far with future techs like in vanilla bts next war scenario (I at least want mechs!).
I don't need additional civs/leaders and I don't really need a ridiculous amount of new units/buildings (fine if there is a reasonable amount and they don't look out of place). I don't really need changes in how civics work (what bonuses they provide), buildings etc.
The most common problem I'm having with mods I try is that mods are fine but don't have future techs or they do have shitloads of it and new units (from ancient to future) and it starts to look ridiculous, not to speak that turns take forever (like RoM). Oh and I hate modern flags! Just yak!

The closest mod to my heart I found is "quot capita", but unfortunately turns take to long (minor problem) once you reach renaissance and it crashes (major problem). It also had some changes that didn't suit me, like slavery providing 2 :yuck:, serfdom -10% :science: etc. Bonuses changes etc. Maybe a little too much new units. :dunno: And have I mentioned already that the game becomes incredibly slow, which makes it hard to reach the future techs, I tried.

PLEASE HELP, I'm desperate here. If someone knows any mods that falls somewhat closely to my requirements and actually work, please tell. :please:
I need something to help the wait for civ5!

Legends of Revolution is optimized for performance.

First, Welcome to CFC :clap::dance::band:[party]:band::dance::clap:

I am afraid I do not know about multiplayer, but this is from my understanding of vassels:

What sort of vassel are you? Did you loose a war and capitulate or join volentaraly? If volentaraly then you should be able to leave at any time after 10 turns have elapsed. If you capituated then you either need to grow to the same size as your master (either in population or land area) or shrink to less than 50% of your initial land area (when you capitulated). The other way would be for him to demand a reasorce from you, and you refuse. This would however result in the 2 of you being at war, which may not be a good thing.

Hope this helps, and someone more experinced in MP may be allong soon to give a more definative answer.

Hi, I'm a Newbie to the board. I just purchased Civilization IV (the 'complete' version) and just finished downloading the patches.

From what I read in the Forum, patch 319 for Beyond the Sword was supposed to eliminate the need to have the game CD in the drive. Something about DRM being eliminated. I find the need for the CD to be in place everytime I want to play the game to be rather lame. However, the patch did not eliminate this need, as the game still prompts for the CD.

Is there another fix somewhere that will take care of this? Otherwise, I think I may just dump this game. If it makes any difference, I'm running Vista 64 bit. Warlords is at patch ver 213 and Civ is at patch ver 174.

Any recommendations from the experts?

I posted this in the 'new member' thread also.

By the way, I'll take any other suggestions anyone has to offer to get the game 'up to date' and ready to go.

Thanks all!

Augie

If you used the ingame updater, then that probably didn't work and you're actually still using the version of the game you were using before you tried to install 3.19. There's something wrong with the ingame updater for patch 3.19. Just download the 3.19 patch from this site and install it.
