Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Ok, thanks all.

But can someone please explain how the Apostollic Palace/United Nations work? I was playing a game (noble), and all of the sudden, Lincoln won a diplomatic victory in the 17th century because of the Apostollic Palace...

Another time, when I built the U.N., the same poll would be repeated everytime, without someone winning anything...

I read guides but they confuse me even more :(

Have you read this guide:

So I installed BUG yesterday and liked it.
Today I tried to install BULL but it doesn't seem to work.

I copied the files from the Assets folder in the BULL zip file to
C:\Users\~~~~~\Documents\My Games\beyond the sword\CustomAssets\

And then also copied CvGameCoreDLL.dll from the BULL zip to
D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization iv beyond the sword\Assets\

I still get grayed out options in the BUG settings in game, with the message "requires BULL dll".
Am I missing something?

Same problem as here

You may want to post this over in the Modpaks forum where BAT and BULL are located. I have posted several ? over there and gotten quick results. The people that handled the MOD's monitor that thread I'm sure, where as they may not do so as much here.

I had Spain as my vassal state via capitulation. I wanted to keep Madrid indefinitely, but the population revolted and took the city back to Spain. Is there any way besides war to get that city back? Note: I liberated a city back to Spain a few turns ago to make sure she won't break relations.

Also, how does Defensive Pacts and Permanent Alliances work? What are the requirements for both civs to attain that (apart from getting the right tech)?

For Defensive Pact - neither must be at war.

If Isabella capitulated to you, then you're stuck with her and she with you until and unless her land and population both exceed 50% of yours. You cannot declare war on her to take Madrid back as long as she's your vassal. You could try gifting cities back to her until the land and pop requirements are met, along with aggravating her so she'll break away as soon as she's able. Then swoop back in with your army and wipe her out completely, which is probably what you should have done the first time.

Because of the lingering effects of local culture in Civ IV, you can't just capture a city, especially a centrally-located capital, and expect to keep it. Even if you stock it to the gills with military units to prevent a revolt like you experienced, you'll still be unable to work all of the city's tiles and you'll face additional "We yearn to rejoin our motherland!" unhappiness for many, many turns to come. For a juicy city like a capital, you need to capture several nearby cities as well to guarantee not only that you can keep it, but also that you can optimize the city's workable area. For this reason, it often makes more sense to wipe out an enemy civ than to take them as a vassal.

Maybe I should, but Charlemagne was her vassal state, then broke off, and Isabella was quite the bully in my game. Then she suddenly declared war on me, that got me pissed, but I didn't want her eliminated from the game just yet.

Maybe liberating that other city to her was a bad idea...I noticed that Madrid was under revolt, but I stationed enough troops so eventually it'd go away...I guess it didn't go as planned. Isabella had a total of five cities, I took away three, gave her back one, and now Madrid's under Spanish control.

Heh, that's why I'm glad to be a newbie and I brought my question to this thread. Such a noobish thing to do. :P Thing was, Madrid had a lot of Wonders in it. Before my war with Isabella, I was practically in last place. Once I took this city, I was in first place, and I vowed not let it fall to Spanish hands again. Although after it reverted to Isabella I didn't suffer by score (perhaps power).

What if I did a system restore on my computer? :P I foolishly saved the game after capture.

That's why you maintain multiple saves per game and keep frequent auto-saves.

About horses, I have managed to find the horse resource, build a pasture on it, but I still don't get any cavalry. I have researched horseback riding. Is there something I've missed?

Link a road from your city to the pasture to allow horses access to your city.

Ah, and that goes for all resources right? And do they have to be within the supply range of a city of just within your territory?

I think they just need to be connected by road to all your cities, however tenuous the road link (and not claimed by another civilisation, of course).

But the resource has to be within your boundaries, right? Otherwise any faction can claim it.

In that case, I guess it was pretty dumb of me to build a base close to the snow next to 2 silver resources, because it isn't growing. :(

It doesn't need to be, but it's safer to be so. :)

An excellent point--going back and replaying with a significantly different strategy is an excellent way to learn and get better at the game.

Just to clarify: to be accessible to your civilization a resource has to (a) be within your cultural boundaries, (b) be improved with either the required tile improvement (a pasture in this case), a fort, or by having a city founded directly on top of it, and (c) have a "route" from at least one of your cities to it. This route can take several forms (rivers, coastline, etc.), but the safest bet is a road linking the resource tile to your nearest city.

It does? I've been running roads to Arctic fur depots for years and I've been getting no effect from them?!

I'm not sure what you're referring to here.

Building fur camps outside of my cultural borders. Maybe it's because it's really late and I'm forgetting things. :D

First, you can't build camps outside your borders--though that may have changed in one of the expansion packs or patches, which naturally leads to the question, which version of the game are you playing? And even if you build forts on the fur tiles, they still won't do you a lick of good if they're outside your borders.

3.19 as usual. I may be just having a brain splat moment. :)
