Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Montezuma is a war monger psycho who will attack anyone, no matter how awful his odds are. Usually, if he is anywhere nearby, I figure we will be at war unless some other civ kills him first. Occasionally, I decide to befriend him. Once he is at Friendly, he makes a wonderful attack dog. You don't even have to bribe him. Just pick out a target civ and ask him to declare war as a favor to you, his good friend. He'll have at 'em, even if you don't declare war too. :ar15:

Sorry if this has been asked before, but there are almost 1000 pages in this thread.

I have observed that the AIs are incredibly stupid about where they build their cities. As in, "If you'd gone 1 square further north, you'd have gotten two more Sugar resources, fresh water and been on the coast." So I want to design a map where the city tiles are designated ahead of time and you can't build anywhere else. Some earlier version of Civ had this, or I came across it at some point and now cant find it again. How do I change the 'can/can't build city here' value of a tile?

Alright that makes sense I guess, usually I try for 90% but if 50-60% is okay Expansion is something I definitely need to do.

My last question is, why does everyone hate Montezuma?

I don’t hate Montezuma, his unpredictability mean you have to be on your toes because you never know what he might do. Helps make the game less predictable.

I also don't hate Montezuma. Technically, I don't agree that he makes the game less predictable. It's very predictable - there will be war. Lots of it. Build a few more units and sic him on others early. Later on, he techs miserably and will attack you with hordes of outdated units. If you have the Great Wall and wait for him on your land on some killing ground (Machine Guns on a forest or hit him with more modern units) you can rack up some serious GG points.

Monty doesn't scare me because he's insane and techs poorly. Shaka and Nappy scare me more because they tech better and aren't as prone to some suicide DOW. They seem to understand the point of war is to get more land, not war for its own sake.

I agree that later in the game Monty is a good source of both GG points and lulz. Early in the game, however, he can be an incredible nuisance when he's next door just because of his presence and predictability. To deal with him, you either have to (a) adopt his religion (and give in to his every request/demand) or (b) prepare to go to war with him. While either option sounds easy enough, you may have had other plans, such as building a wonder or REXing or adopting a different religion for whatever reason. Thus the hatred, because having him nearby automatically dictates your choices in the early game.

This hurts to ask....

I have been tasked with a greed issue. Take control of a mine in enemy territory.

How do I set a flag on that mine??

- Open the event log (top left pen and paper button)
- Scroll to where the event is written
- Click the writing in the event log to be taken to the tile (also works for anything else you knew the location of when it occurred)
- Press Alt-S and click the tile
- Type your text and press enter

To cancel writing a sign, press Alt-S again. To remove a sign at a later date, just press Alt-S and click the tile again.

Hope that covers everything. :)

hi, I play BtS patch 3.19 and the game autosaves each 4 turns. I tried to change the autosave settings, but neither my "CivilizationIV.ini" file, nor the "CivilizationIV.ini.bak" file contain the corresponding line (AutoSaveInterval = 4). can I just add the line there or is it hidden in some other file?
thanks :)

you can just put it in :

Spoiler :
Code:
; Set to 1 for no intro movie
NoIntroMovie = 0

; Set to 1 for no python exception popups
HidePythonExceptions = 0

; The maximum number of autosaves kept in the directory before being deleted.
MaxAutoSaves = 20

; Specify the number of turns between autoSaves. 0 means no autosave.
AutoSaveInterval = 100

; Enable Audio
AudioEnable = 1

; English(0),French(1),German(2),Italian(3),Spanish(4) - Defaults to user-installed language
Language = 0

; Determines which user profile is loaded on game start
UserProfile = Default Profile

; Sync input to smooth interface (may run slower)
SyncInput = 0

I'm sure this has been asked and answered but I can't form the right search to get the answer: When playing a duel, for example, and achieving a conquest victory very early -like warrior walks in straight line to other city and wins battle, sometimes the game does not end for a few more turns; what gives?

I don't know exactly, but I think there's a limit to how early you can win. I had the same thing when I was testing some stuff out on Worldbuilder, and exceeded the domination limit but it was only until 10 or so turns later I actually won.

I got the coal fuel event which gives coal plants +4:hammers:. If I build Three Gorges Dam or a bunch of nuke plants, does that bonus go away along with the coal plants' unhealthiness?

I just tried to play a game with standard BTS after playing nothing but LOR for a long time. I was Mansa Musa and invaded Ramses with a large stack of 5 swordsman, 5 catapults, 2 spear, 1 skirmisher, 1 axe. Ramses attacked me with a bunch of axemen and my catapults were destroyed.

Is it normal for the catapults to be chosen to engage in the battle when there are like 3 or 4 other different unit types in the same stack? I can't remember this ever happening in LOR, and it's been so long since I played BTS that I don't know if that's typical.

Yes. Given your composition and if you were on flat ground, your axe probably went first, to be followed by your cats. His axes get a bonus vs your other units. Next time, I recommend more axes instead of swords.

No it doesn't. In fact if you already have a different power plant, building a coal plant will give you +4 :hammers: as well.

Awesome, thanks.
