Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

if a certain barbarian area is hidden by the fog really long into the game, can they get high-tech units? like fighters and tanks and stuff like that?

In all of my games they don't last long enough to get any better than axes and archers but in previous threads on this topic, people playing on New World generating maps report seeing barbs as advanced as rifles but no better. I think one person reported seeing cavalry but no one else had. Someone looked at the code and said there is a cap on how advanced they can get. I may be remembering wrong but I think it was rifles.

ok thank you

i have seen barbarians as strong as grenadiers, but i usually rush the cities and kill them off.

are there any code-divers here that can give me the properties of jungle/forest growth? I feel like whenever I get a gems start I need to improve them first before my food so that jungle won't grow over them...

I can't speak as a code diver, but I've seen a lot of people claiming that forests and jungle have reduced growth probability if the tile is roaded, and my playing experience is consistent with that. I doubt they'd make a gems tile have higher jungle growth probability, you just notice it more because you're paying more attention to that tile.

Merry xmas.

The ranged attack for archery units is a feature of Dale's Combat Mod which is included in many other mods (especially those using Revolutions/Dale's Combat Mod as a core; usually abbreviated as Rev/DCM). The firs thing you need to do is download a mod that includes this, and then activate the option in that mods menu.

I reccommend Legends of Revolution Mod (it's very stable), but there are many others.

Thank you SO much!

Lol I find it odd that the range ability isn't already in the game. I played the Civ5 demo a few weeks ago and it had the range ability. Oh well.......time to find that mod

You're welcome, and Happy Non-Denominational Festive Association to you.

V and IV are very different (easily as different as III from IV), and are best approached as being disimilar games.

Hello,

I'm just downloading the Civ IV complete pack from Steam. As I understand it, I have the following options for playing the classic game mode with self-set goals (Building a spaceship or so): Vanilla Civ IV, Warlords, which extends Civ IV and Beyond the Sword which also extends Civ IV.
Each of the extensions seems to add stuff to the general game, so is there a way to make use of the additions of both extensions simultaneously? If I start a new game in the regular Civ IV those additions won't show up, right?

Beyond the Sword includes all the additions and modifications of Warlords, so if you play a BtS game you're getting everything.

Okay can someone explain the statistics - Demographics window?
What do they take into a count in the "life expectancy" "exports/imports" and "Approval rate" ??

Quick question on a Trade Mission. Just uncovered the "other" continent in my current game and started exploring. It appears that the only thing on this continent are some Barbarian cities.

I have explored and discovered all of my current land mass and all of my rivals are here with me. I'm the first one to tech to Compass and get the Caravel and I've got a GM just about ready to pop. If I throw him on a Caravel and send him to the other continent can he do a trade mission in a Barb City? Is it worth it if so?

My other option would be to send the caravel around that continent to the back side of my landmass to do a trade mission with the farthest part of a known Civ, and work on the Circumnavigate bonus.

Um, if you send poor Coco Chanel (or any other GM) to a Barb City to conduct a Trade Mission, she ends up in the dinner pot. :D

The Trade Mission is cool if you need a lot of quick cash (say, mass upgrades to Cavalry/Rifle/Cannons). Otherwise, your best bet is to bulb, save for a GA, or save for a corp if you don't plan on running State Property.

I'm not cash strapped, but I'm not to far off from Gunpowder and will be looking at a pretty pricey upgrade of units. I've been lucky in Tax collection so I've kept a solid tech lead running Deficit research. I can keep him hanging around for a possible Corp. or GA, just thought that if the overseas thing with the Barb's could work it would be a nice chunk of change. Thanks for the input!

I really wasn't sure where to post this, so my apologies for cluttering up gameplay Q&A.

I'm trying to find examples of the 'research' sound effects in the Civilization games. I need to reference them for a project. I've had no luck with Google/YouTube searches, and I do not have the game (I know, I know, shame on me!)

Can someone point me to a link, either in this forum or on the web where I might hear an example of these? Or, if you can post an example it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Civ-Fanatics!

Remember that nothing upgrades to muskets. You need to tech rifling or military science (for grenadiers, or chemistry if not playing BtS).

I'm not sure what you mean by "research sound effects". Do you mean the quotations that get read aloud every time a technology is researched in the game?
