Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Is there a decent article floating around here somewhere that deals with what wonders lose when obsoleted?
F

Probably. My take is that wonders, when obsolete:
- retain GPP output
- retain cultural output
- lose buildings they generate (e.g. Monuments).
- YOUR wonders lose special abilities that apply to YOUR civ when YOU obsolete them - e.g. no free commerce on water when you obsolete Colossus, no more cultural bonuses from Sistine.
- YOUR wonders lose special abilities that apply to AI civs when the AI (or AIs) in question, obsoletes them.
- AI wonders lose special abilities that apply to YOUR civ only, when YOU obsolete them
- Wonders that apply to ALL civs (like the AP) lose their special abilities when the Owner/Resident obsoletes them.

When captured, wonders:
- lose cultural output
- lose one-time abilities (obviously... no free GA if you capture the Taj, or free tech for capturing Oracle, or free pop point from Hanging Gardens).
- transfer ongoing bonuses (like the unhappiness from SoZ) immediately.

Hmmm... I found something interesting after some time in CIV4... After this "something" I never ever run 90/80/70/60/40/30/20/10 % research slider in early game (atleast till >50 commerce/turn) - or I will lose somewhere 1 commerce :)
Use 100/50 or 0% (sometimes also 50% should not be used).
Most important time to check this is after building 2nd city when maintence show up.. On 100% I wil have for example +14 research and -2 maintence.. but on 90% it will jump to +12 research and -1 maintence.... (sum 13, not 14), only on 50% and 0% it will be again full 14 not 13. And this 1 coin is much in early game. (actually on 0% research and 0/turn research you still get 1 point of tech developed per turn, so I most often run 100->0-->100% :)

This is called "binary research" since there are generally only 2 settings you use, 100% or 0%.

It used to be much more important since the original versions of Civ4 actually converted the contribution from each city to an integer before adding it into the total. Once they switched to converting after combining all the cities it become much less important since the difference is only ever 1 per turn instead of the 1 per city per turn that it could originally be.

Sure, its not so important... But civ games is made from these tiny small parts what all together can make significant difference (like - 1 turn lost for funding religion just because of this tiny 1/turn could make big impact on all game later - someone else will get shrine, someone else will get chance to dont crash economy with spaming units etc :D)
So if I can manage get out this 1 combined with 1 "free to use" on 0% in 1 of 10 turns, it make difference in some time (specially on marathon speed, where I usually fast build 2nd city and 3rd comes later).

Hi I'm not a massive newbie but I'm no doubt about to sound like one, I've been playing a game recently and have noticed that I no longer get any information in the foreign advisor tab about relations with other countries.

Basically all I get told is whether they are friendly, pleased, cautious, annoyed or furious toward me. I do not get reasons why i.e. +1 <reason> -1 <reason>. Its frustrating because it used to help alot to know these reasons. Any idea how to sort this out?

Most annoying is that i can see the other nations info towards eachother but only the basic info toward me.

Any help would be good.

Welcome to CFC, charli87!

:band:

I could be wrong about this, but I think those detailed reasons/info are part of the BUG mod. Did you recently use it, by any chance?

Hi thanks for the welcome, such a great site. I havn't used a BUG mod just normal civ 4 from steam. I've searched for an explanation hope i havn't misssed somthing.

This may not be helpful, I might just be telling you to look where you normally look (but all of a sudden have no info). Try hovering over the leader/civ name on the scoreboard on the main screen. If that doesn't work go to the diplo screen and click on the "INFO" tab, that should show you what you're looking for.

If not...well, someone who knows the game much better than me should be along shortly. :D

i think i have a weird version, i have no "info" tab on the diplo screen :( how do i add a screenshot so you can see what im talking about? (proper noob question there lol)

Sorry... I've never bothered to figure out how to post screenshots myself...

Where did the +1/-1 info usually come up for you?

To insert screenshots, you need to upload them to an image hosting site (such as Photobucket), then copy the URL for the image and paste it into your message by using the "Insert Image" button.

I'm plumbing the depths of my Civ IV memory on your original question, so I may be wrong about this, but I seem to recall that one of the patches removed the "Info" tab on the diplo screen as the Firaxis developers thought it was too "busy"; BUG is now required to add it back in. This may apply to seeing the diplomatic tally when you hover over leaderheads, too.

i have a normal civ iv (no expansion) so where can i download BUG? thanks for the help so far, i will add more images if you want.

this is what my foreign advisor looks like, my mouse is over louis and it only says cautious no other info.

That image was probably a bad example. That early in the game you may very well have no modifiers so his opinion of you is at 0 (ignoring any hidden modifiers that you need something like BULL to see).

You need to check later in the game when things have happened like you refusing to give him something he asked for, or simply having known each other long enough to get the +1 for years of peace modifier.

here is what it says for me much later in the game http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd475/charli871/?action=view&current=diploscreen2.jpg

From your screen shot, it is apparent that you are playing BTS. If you download BUG Mod and install it, you can access lots more information. I have used it so long now that I don't recall what you are supposed to see without it. BUG Mod does not change the game at all. It only makes all the information easy to find. If you install it in CustomAssets, rather than as a mod, it will be present in every game that you start.

That's odd, if you guys look at all three of his images, it shows the modifiers for one AI to another AI, but not to him.

...I don't know, charli, that's a new one to me.

BTW, try not to doublepost. I'm not a Net Nanny, but the mods don't like that- if you were the last person to post in a thread and you have more to say, just edit your post.

I installed the BUG modifier and will soon delete it, lots of XML loading errors or somthing http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd475/charli871/?action=view&current=BUGerror.jpg, crashed the game very quickly. Not sure if i installed it wrong or somthing :(, installed it in the civ iv folder.

meh bad day for my civilization haha
