Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Another question.. Haha :). Okay, so my buddy and I are playing a game together against some AI because we're noobs. Well, he has four food coming in per turn, with one citizen out working. His population is only one at the moment. His food is staying right where it is, even though one citizen eats two food. How come the other two isn't moving into surplus?

Edit: Is it possibly because he is creating a character (settler) while he has four food income?

Yes. When a city is training Settlers or Workers, all the excess food folds into the production.

Edit2: Obelisks are confusing me slightly. I understand that obsolete with calendar means I can't build anymore if I get calendars. I am curious what happens to the ones already constructed. Also, one thing bothering me is I can't figure out what the -30 production per 3 turns means. My buddy who is my ally has -30 per 5. Is that better or worse for me? I was the one who built Stonehenge.

They stop working (you won't get your +1:culture: any more). As far as the "-30 per 3", are you talking about how the building costs 30:hammers: and will take 3 turns to build?

I'm unsure, because that shows up on the view of me double clicking my main town and seeing it where the Stonehenge is located along with other buildings. It says -30 per 3 and my buddy has -30 per 5. I was wondering if it cuts down on production for future buildings, or if it is just showing how long it would take me to build another one somewhere else? Only thing is I won't need to because of Stonehenge.

FPs add -0.4 health each, while forests grant +0,4. Unroaded forests, oasis, and hills will generally cause units to end their turn there, except for special units (e.g. Forest II units, Guerilla II units, or Indian fast workers). Also, crossing a river will, prior to Construction. As long as you're not familiar with unit movements, it's better to use the "go to mode" option instead of just right clicking on a tile, so that you can see how far a unit can get before actually moving it.

FP means flood plain. Check out all the base terrain types in the Civopedia. The other one that gives -health is jungle.

Yeah use the "Go-To" button/shortcut if in the slightest doubt, because you will constantly be surprised by some movement penalty that you hadn't factored in - and in wartime it's usually fatal.

Thanks now another haha. Slavery, I have bronze working complete, but I can't choose to make a slave. I have a seven pop city and one guy is pissed so he's doing nothing. I want to remove him into slavery so it will be useful at least, but it isn't giving me the option. It's greyed out when I double click my town center. What's wrong?

There's a crown icon up there in the user interface. Take it. You are then led to a civic swaps table. In Labor section, take slavery. Then, you get slavery available and it consumes population (1 pop for 30 hammers; 2 pops for 60 hammers and so on).
There are no slave units in the normal game. In mods, there are.

Thank you.

Now, I got my people happy after unlocking government civics from pyramids. Now I am representation or whatever. I have like all seven or eight citizens working the fields out there. My question is when I move one from hammers to a food and gold tile, the gold doesn't change. My income stays as +2 per turn, whether they are the mine or the tile with gold and food. What is the point of having my men on those tiles then?

Thank you.

Take a look at the research bar, did the green bar increase(a bit)?

Needs a more complex explanation. ;)

Note: I am playing with one tile and switching the guy around for this test. Research is 14 when he is working the mines, 17 when he is a special citizen, and 15 when he is working my cottage. Gold stays the same even though the cottage says +1 whereas the mine doesn't have any addition to gold.

You can only whip half of the population. Let's say your city has 7 pop. You can only whip 3pop of 7(not 4) which is converted into 90:hammers:. If your production requires 91:hammers: to build, whipping is not possible.

And wonders have a penalty, so it's not 30 hammers per pop.

Wonders have a penalty? I did not know this.

Is there a way to build fishing boats from workboats if I don't have a city started right on the coast line? There are some fish in the water that will help me with health in my second town, but I need a fishing vessel to get this bonus.

I don't understand this much better than you do, but: tiles do not produce gold, they produce commerce. From what I can gather, commerce has little effect on your gold balance, it impacts your research points (beakers) per turn instead. What I really don't know is why. :crazyeye:

Oh shoot, I just noticed that by looking around. It adds like a small percentage or something. Okay, so now I will read both about commerce and wealth.

Yet again ha. I have an iron mine now connected to town with a road. It is within my borders, but it is three tiles down and two to the left of the main town. I can't work it with a citizen, is that because it's too far away or something? Would I have to build another town closer to benefit from the iron.

I read somewhere that you can only benefit from one iron resource, so if I find another one nearby or in another town, how do I trade it away? OR is it one benefit per resource per town?

Thanks again.

Haha thanks man, but I did that and I don't even know if you can call it a tutorial. Hence the reason why I'm asking so many uncovered questions here. Thanks.

Contact a leader by clicking the name on the score board (bottom right), then click your iron resource, then click "what will you give me for this?"

Trade iron on the highest bidder. Don't just trade it to anyone especially if he/she is a future target or is aggressive.

Ha no worries, you've been helping and I appreciate it. I know I'm coming at you guys with a lot of questions, so I really do appreciate the responses a lot. I actually wish they did a bit better on the tutorial.

Edit: Also, is it to much to ask you to answer the rest of the questions on the resource post I made? Haha I am still unsure if you just need one of each resource per game/map or if it is one per city. Also unsure if I can only work a certain amount of squares out. Like I said I have iron mine now, but I can't work a person on it (3 down, 2 left.) Am I getting the iron bonus? I think I am able to create infantry that was requiring iron, but I can't remember exactly. Thanks.

Okay, let's assume you have 3 cities and the iron is inside your cultural borders connected by roads/river to cityA.
CityA and cityB are connected to each other, but cityC is not.
So cityC cannot produce iron based units, unless it is connected to cityA or cityB.

Note: You don't have to put citizen on the iron resource just to produce units. As long it has road or it's in riverside connecting to your city. Also I'm not a man.
