Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Sorry but which uttons do I use for moving something which is third to first without removing the others and which button to copy and paste a list of buildings queue from one city to another?

Thanks.

Click in the queue on the item that you want to move to first. That will remove it from the queue. Next control click it in the horizontal list of available builds. That will move it to first build. Any turns that you earlier put into it (if you did so) will be preserved not lost.

"bug init cannot find xml file"
I just put civ iv complete onto my new laptop, patched it to 3.16 and installed bug 4.4. when I start a new game, the above message is displayed and the horizontal command prompt bar is absent. What do I do?

BUG 4.4 requires BTS 3.19. That may be your problem. Patch BTS to 3.19 and see if that solves the problem.

Did you install BUG in CustomAssets or as a mod?

Double check where you installed the BUG components. Quoting from the BUG Readme: (the dots are just there to create the indents)

To install BUG so that it is always active with your games (this will allow you to use it with succession games and games you open from the CivFanatics forum), you must first copy the files and folders from the Assets folder into your CustomAssets folder. Next create a "BUG Mod" folder next to CustomAssets and copy the Info and UserSettings folders into it. Finally, copy the files inside PrivateMaps into BTS's PublicMaps folder.

At each step it is important that you tell it to overwrite files.

C:\Documents and Settings
<your user name>
.. My Documents
…...My Games
……...Beyond the Sword
………..CustomAssets <-- folders in Assets go here
…………BUG Mod <-- create this folder
…………...Info <-- coyp these two folders here
…………...UserSettings
………..PublicMaps <-- copy files from PrivateMaps here

If something is in the wrong place it can cause the error that you are getting. Note that the BUG Mod and maps folders are not inside Custom Assets but in the BTS folder. Everything else gets installed in the corresponding folders inside Custom Assets.

Hello again :)
I am in a middle of game in which I have the holy city of Taoism, but my state religion is Buddhism (I don't have the holy city of Buddhism) and I have a Great Prophet. I can use him to make the special Taoism building (The Dai Miao), but I'm not sure if I will still get the 1 gold per each city with Taoism since I don't want convert it.
So will I get 1 gold per city if I stay with Buddhism as my state religion?

Thanks!

Shrines give gold for all cities of its religion regardless of what religion, or lack therof that your running. If you are actually running the same religion as any shrines you own they will be ounted as holy buildings just like temples, monastaries and cathedrals and will get the bonuses from Sistine Chapel, University of Sankore and Spiral Minaret.

I used the installation wizard. I didn't create a new folder. Maybe I'll try again when I'm less frustrated. Maybe the civilization gods are trying to tell me to quit messing around with it for a little while.

I've got a problem where my civ IV icon got replaced with the Mars Now Icon

Is there any quick way that i may change it back?

Do you mean the shortcut icon on your windows? If so right click it and go to properties, click change icon if its not looking in the right folder go to wherever your BTS is saved which is likely to be
C:\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Civ4BeyondSword.exe
and click on one of the CIV BTS icons, if you pick one that has a square black background just try the others.

If you steal a tech you already have beakers invested in, does the EP cost decrease? If yes, at what rate in relation to the amount of beakers you already put into it?

I am fairly sure not, beakers invested have no effect on steal costs.

I have hit two roadblocks:

1. Keep getting swamped on research, albeit much later in the game than formerly. I build commerce, and some research cities. Any thoughts?

2. I play on normal speed. Since I just play vs. AI players I have no real barometer of expected progress in research. I try to build 3 cities fast through slavery, and make one a research city (if possible). Try to build up some defenses and granaries and then 2 more cities.

At what rate should this be happening?

Not enough information to answer. I suggest posting a shadow game on the strategy and tips forum.

Hello again! Now that I've introduced myself, I have a lot of questions about Civ IV, such as:
1) How and when can I spread my religion to a city belonging to another civ? Sometimes I move my missionary into one of them and the option is disabled.
2) What (if any)are the benefits of conversion to a religion?Specifically, is it possible to use it as a non- military weapon to win the game?
3) How can I make a full alliance with another civ (I mean, offensive and defensive)?
4)How many and which official expansions does Civ IV have so far?
5)Can I play Civ IV in Windows 8.1?
Thank you.

Hello again! Now that I've introduced myself, I have a lot of questions about Civ IV, such as:
1) How and when can I spread my religion to a city belonging to another civ? Sometimes I move my missionary into one of them and the option is disabled.
This is usually because they are in Theocracy, and it prevents spread of non-state religions.
2) What (if any)are the benefits of conversion to a religion?Specifically, is it possible to use it as a non- military weapon to win the game?
Conversion to a religeon gives you happiness and whatever benifits you get from your religion civic in cities with that religion. It also gives you diplo advantage with civs with the same religion at the expence of diplo penalites with all civs with a differeent religion.

You can in the lastest expansion win peacefully by spreading your religion to every civ, building the apostolic palace and getting voted as winner. The diplo benefits could help you win by other means.
3) How can I make a full alliance with another civ (I mean, offensive and defensive)?
You can create a perminant aliance with another civ if you turn that option on at the beginning of the game. It is much more than the defensive aliance, a bit more like being all part of one civ.
4)How many and which official expansions does Civ IV have so far?
2, Warlords and Beyond the Sword.
5)Can I play Civ IV in Windows 8.1?
Never tried it, but I would have thought there would be a lot more complaints here if you could not.

To expand on what Samson said:

1) How and when can I spread my religion to a city belonging to another civ? Sometimes I move my missionary into one of them and the option is disabled.
If the civ is in Theocracy, you can gift the missionary to the other civ and (if they're an AI) they will attempt to use the missionary to add the religion to one of their cities. (The missionary may fail in this task if the other city already has one or more religions.) You can also found a "junk" city near their boarder, convert that city, then gift it to the civ in Theocracy.
2) What (if any)are the benefits of conversion to a religion?Specifically, is it possible to use it as a non- military weapon to win the game?
Besides the AP victory, if you control the shrine of the religion, you will get more gold from the shrine. (Shrines give 1 :gold: per city in the religion, multiplied by market/grocer/bank/Wall Street if they're in the city as well.)

Also, civilizations that share a state religion will get a boost to relations (and get a reduction in relations if they have different state religions.)

Having multiple religions in a city will mean you can build one temple (small religious building), one cathedral (large religious building, subject to needing enough temples built to build another cathedral (on a per-religion basis)) and (before Scientific Method) one monastery per religion.
3) How can I make a full alliance with another civ (I mean, offensive and defensive)?
And to be able to get a permanent alliance, at least one of the civs needs to know Communism and the civs need a total of at least 40 turns of shared war and defensive alliance time.

4)How many and which official expansions does Civ IV have so far?
Get BtS. The last official patch to BtS is 3.19.

5)Can I play Civ IV in Windows 8.1?
I haven't personally done it (I'm a Mac guy), but I've seen others on this site report they can play it in Windows 8.

Thank you.
You're welcome.
