This is a minor annoyance, but is there a way to make it so that your in-game name automatically corresponds to the name of the leader you chose to play as, like it was in Civ 3?

Currently my name stays as the name I set no matter which Civ leader I chose. I have to edit it every time I start a new game to make it correspond with the leader I'm choosing to play as (I like it that way because it is more realistic and immersive). It's a minor inconvenience, I know, but I just wondered if there was a way to get around this.

Hi, I don't have Warlords extension, only the regular game. What are the best mods for my version ? Or is it simpler to just buy the extension ?

Go to My Documents then My Games then Sid Meier's Civilization 4 and open the ini file. Where it says Ingame Alias (or something) followed by something delete the something.

I just found this site, and let me say, it's awesome! I got a ton of questions that were bugging me answered in the article section. Unfortunately, I've got one that I couldn't find an answer to.

When I play (Warlords, no mods), no matter the speed, it seems like everything goes way too slow. By the time I get to "100 turns left", I usually don't even have infantry. There's definitely not enough time to have a space race or even get into post WWII units. Am I doing something wrong? I always keep my research slider at or above 70%, and research seems to go at a fast enough pace.

Please and thank you:)

Do you build libraries/cottages/courthouses?

Oh yeah, definitely. I build libraries and courthouses asap. I usually have cottages on all my spaces with the exception of 1 farm and mines.

Hi all, I'm playing the tutorial at the moment and got a couple of questions about unhealthiness of your city.
I know I can fix the jungle issue with removing the jungle around the city, but what about the other things?
Can anything be done about buildings/flooding planes giving negative heathiness?? (Besides grocery/hospital, which doesn't remove the negative just adds positive)
And as for population, should I stop the growth of my city to prevent extra unhealthiness if the negative is getting to much?

Recycling centers remove the unhealthiness from buildings, and if you're building massive cities that require alot of health, you're going to want to switch to the environmentalism civ, although only as a last resort.
As for throttling growth, just change the tiles your people work, and build/destroy certain improvments that affect the amount of food you get from each tile.

Welcome to civfanatics! :band:

There can be many causes for a slower research speed. Later in the game, a larger empire will research quicker than a smaller empire while quick expansion at the start of the game can seriously hurt your research speed because of high upkeep costs. As said cottages (build early in the game) and libraries, observatories, universities and research labs help your research. However, the size of your cities is extremely important too. A size 10 city completely filled with cottages won't compete with a size 20 city which was able to grow that big earlier in the game thanks to some extra farms but is still using more cottages than the smaller city.
When you're spending a lot of gold from commerce to maintain your empire, then the gold increasing buildings can also be important. Don't forget those turns where you upgrade your army and use 100% gold turns. Those turns also increase your average gold percentage and make those gold increasing buildings more important.

I wonder how you can keep up with the other empires. Are they researching quicker than you or not? Remember that technology trading is also very important. Because the AI controlled civilizations can research a lot quicker at the higher difficulty levels, you'll see that players playing at these levels are often more advanced at certain periods in the game. The technology trading can help them use a part of that high research speed of the AI for their own civilization.

A few savegames could help determine the weaker parts of your empire and might help us give you better suggestions to improve your empire. A savegame of around 500AD and one around 1200AD could help.

I haven't been here in 1½ year (shame on me?) ! I haven't played at C4 for the past 18 months !

Since I will buy the 2nd expansion soon, I had to reinstall C4 and to patch it up to the very recent version 1.74. My problem is this :

With all the updates since January 2006, there must be a lot of new stuff in the game (besides the bug-fixes). Can you refer me to a webpage where all the changes would be presented as a compilation?

Thanx (even I don't deserve it...)

P.S. > I found the changelogs for all 4 patches and integrated them in a small-type, 7-page Word-doc. PM me your e-mail address if you want this compilation of all the changes & fixes done to the basic, "plain-vanilla" retail-version of C4.

How exactly does attack & defend work? Is there really any difference between attacking and defending? The Main Civ IV manual is unclear. It just says each unit has a certain strength and this is used to calculate odds.

What's the point then (for instance) of having an extra first strike as you have the same odds of dying if you attack or defend?

@The Rusty Gamer: The manual is far from accurate in a number of places. The numbers you're seeing in game are normal though.

The exact number depends on the game speed (quick/normal/epic/marathon), and is scaled to match the other factors (marathon culture levels are 3x those of normal, Epic is 1.5x and so on.) Difficulty level is not a factor.

A quick research seems to indicate that there were only 4 patches for the basic game : 1.09, 1.52, 1.61, 1.74.

Patch 1.52 (released in December 2005) seems to have introduced a lot of new stuff. (I had stopped playing without moving up to that 1.52 version : that's why I am surprised by all the changes & fixes which were done since I stopped playing, 18 months ago.

P.S. > Done! I now have a 7-page Word doc with the changelogs of all those 4 versions. If anybody wants this compilation, PM me your e-mail address.
