The Imperialistic trait will increase the amount of points that go towards creating a Great General in each combat.

Check out the F5 (Military Advisor) screen in the game, and notice the Great General bar at the bottom. Watch how it increases if you win a combat, depending on the amount of XP that your unit gains. With an Imperialistic civ, that same combat will give you more points on the Great General bar (although the points are not always doubled [as +100% Great General Emergence would imply], since there are hidden multipliers in the game - for instance when you are in your own territory).

Hi everybody’
I’m one of those sad old guys who only plays against the computer (which I’m convinced cheats on occasions) I play patched version 1.74 on Noble level and just about hold my own. But I’m getting very frustrated trying to stop my cities doing their own thing and going into starvation mode when the turn before they were a couple of turns from growing.

It’s the 1940s and I’m trying to build the Apollo project and increasing my other 15 plus size cities. I carefully set each one up to grow quickly. There are no happiness or health problems. On the next turn I find some of them are in starvation mode with lots of merchants and scientists. It doesn’t matter what traits I emphasise or switch off it still happens with one or two cities each turn. That means each round I have to go into each city and light up the appropriate tiles again and again. Which is where I give up in frustration.

I thought it might be a computer glitch but I’ve tried the same game on my laptop and the same thing happens. Can anyone help with this?

Barbs will kill every Great Person except a Great Spy, I believe (because they're invisible to all units). I once lost a Great Prophet to barbs due to a Goto order in a fast paced multiplayer game... needless to say I haven't made that mistake again since. :(

In Warlords and BTS (Beyond the Sword), a new Great Person was introduced: the Great General.
The GG can build a Military Academy, join the city as a Military Instructor, or join a unit for 20XP and free upgrades.

Welcome to the Forums.

Vanilla, right?
You can use your City Governor to emphasize food, and select the City Specialists you want. They should have a yellow box around them making them (more or less) permanent.

However, when a city grows, you unfortunately will have to go back to it to make sure it's still doing what you want.

And, Welcome to posting.

Just a minor correction: if you join a GG to a unit, that unit will recieve the Warlord promotion ( free upgrades ) and 20 XP will be distributed evenly for the units in the tile. There are certain circumstances where it might be a good idea to give the XP to more than one unit ( if the XP would be wasted in the warlords unit for not acheiving another promo , but valuable in a second unit , for a example ), but most of the times it is better to make sure that the unit you want to be a warlord is alone in a tile when you attach the GG to it.

Some people advise attaching the GG to a weak mobile (move 2) unit and promote up the medic line to get medic III, which can only go to a unit attached to a GG. There may be other GG-only promotions, but medic III is the one I really like.

You pick a "weak" unit because that means when you put it in a stack (which you should do immediately!) it's unlikely ever to be selected to defend against an attack.

Well, the issue of how to get super-medics is one where ppl have various lines of reasoning. Surely that a mobile unit is the best idea in pre-BtS ( vanilla/warlords ), but in BtS neither mounted units neither scouts/explorers can be the ultimate healer, the Medic III/woodsman III combo... and not mentioning that a mounted medic can be brought to fight by the Khmer UU, regardless of being the weakest unit on field or not.....

Yea I'll take a "one size fits all" civ comment and a box of rubber bands please.

If you recall, Great Generals weren't in vanilla Civ4, so it wouldn't actually matter there. :p

Is it rare for an event to give a Great Artist?
Pretty rare, yes. Getting a free Great Person is a fairly powerful event, so count yourself lucky if you get one. :)
