Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I actually find the graphics superior on the Windows version. I remember a time when it was the other way round... <sigh...> ;)
Macs still completely pwn PCs when it comes to sound. You can say what you want against the Mac's interface, compatibility, ease of use, styling, small user base, graphics, whatever you want - but Macs still pwn for sound.

A pretty contentious statement considering it's off-topic. I don't see why any brand beats another in terms of sound unless you are talking about computers where you cannot install sound cards.

I don't want to get embroiled in yet another Mac vs PC argument. I can't actually hear the sound on BtS, as I haven't installed the relevant drivers for my speakers. When I'm running MacOS the audio goes via a Matrox MXO into a stereo system and, of course, sounds wonderful. But it might sound equally wonderful if Windows were to recognise the Matrox MXO (which the MXO is not designed for).

I can hear the BtS sound if I disconnect the MXO, but it only comes through the built-in speaker on the Mac Pro, and is a bit tinny.

This is a very roundabout way of saying I can't comment on henrebotha's assertion and, as POM rightly points out, it's OT anyway.

I may sound dumb, but how do I get the Mod to play on my Computer? I only get a RAR file and have no idea what to do from there

Firstly, if you don't already have it, you'll need to get yourself WinRAR (it's similar to Winzip). Then extract the RAR file into your mods folder, which will depend upon which expansion pack you're using (and which one the mod is made for).

For no expansions: Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization IV/Mods
For Warlords: Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization IV/Warlords/Mods
For Beyond the Sword: Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization IV/Beyond the Sword/Mods

After you've done that, load up Civ4 as normal, then go to "Advanced" in the main menu, and click "Load a Mod". That should get everything running just fine. :)

Hope that helps.

If you right click on the Civ4 desktop icon you use, then select properties, it will display the path to Civ.
Just go down a level to the /mods directory as Lord Parkin states.

I want to install solver's patch. Where do I extract it?
It should work regardless of where it's extracted to, as I believe there's an installer. However, just to be on the safe side (and assuming it's the BTS version), I'd extract it to:

Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization IV/Beyond the Sword

That should definitely work. :)

I've just bought 'Civ IV Complete' (includes both expansions) . Is there any patch available for it or is it already up to date? Also do you advise adding any mods for my first play through or should I just get to grips with the game first?

Also 3 shortcuts have gone on my desktop. Do i run Beyond the sword to get all of warlords, normal Civ IV, and beyond the sword content?

Does anyone know where I can get a free RAR program? I have WINRAR, but it wants me to pay for it. There has to be something out there that is free, like a torrent or something.

patch 3.17 is the one you need. Welcome to CFC :band:

7-zip is a good free alternative (at least for unpacking RARs). Welcome to cfc :band:

You'll need to patch BtS, but not Vanilla (normal Civ). Not sure about Warlords.

Have you played BtS before? If not, definitely play it without mods first to get the feel of it - it's a very different game.

BtS includes all the changes made for the Warlords edition, plus some new ones, so it's the most 'up-to-date' version of the game. So the answer to your last question is 'yes'.

On the trade table I can't ask for or offer gold. I can fill in an amount and click okay, but it doesn't go down there, it doesn't register. Is this some sort of bug?

Hello everyone, been coming to this site for years, since the good old civ 2 days, though have only made an account today! but to my point...
My question for the newb forum is

After downloading some world wonder mods, so i could have extra wonders in the game(for example the bbc centre, the olympic stadiums etc etc) Ive been unable to intergrate the files into the game

Ive tried placing the world wonder files I downloaded off this site almost everywhere in the game directory. can somebody please explain to me how to get these simple world wonder mods into my games because i am totally lost!!!

thanks

Usually the mod will have instructions as to where they need to be downloaded. Are you sure the mod(s) is(are) compatible with the version of Civ4 that you have (Vanilla, BtS, Warlords, patch #?).

Do you have the money that you're trying to offer?

Just built a new system with Win XP Pro 64bit.

Now I can't install CIV IV. Just after Installation starts I get a pop up msg; Catastrophic error. and installation aborts.

Any help out there. I know there are others here using 64 bit systems.

Is there a special place/forum I can go to to get answers?

Just got a new toy and it's broke.

Yes for sure. I know I am in the green in terms of GPT. On the AI side, it shows how much gold they have, and then I can click that and put it up to however much they have available. But then when I click ok, nothing happens. Same when I put in how much I want to give. I am offering money that I have.

EDIT: I played again today, and its okay. Seems to have been a temporary glitch.
