Does world size affect any of the rules of the game? Like turns to make an improvement, research, etc...

Is there a way to watch a game full of AI play out?

Once you found your first city go into world builder and gift yourself 100 great spys. Settle 20 in your capital for espionage and use the rest to scout. When they come across an AI civ leave them in the city. Also use 1 great spy against avery civ once you discover them. This works well on a huge pangea map.

Otherwise a permanent alliance with the AI, as was alrady pointed out, works.

Yes it effects various game elements. Research costs go up with world size (as it is assumed that you'll get more cities and thus more research), number of cities upkeep costs decrease somewhat but will eventually cap at the same value (as it is assumed that you'll need to upkeep more cities early in the game) and city distance upkeep is scaled with the mapsize, trade routes distance modifier is scaled with map size, great merchant trade mission value which is dependent on distance is scaled with map size and I'm undoubtedly forgetting some stuff. Research cost is by far the most important game changing effect, city upkeep costs is quite noticeable too.

What is the determining factor for when Barbarians get upgraded units? What has to happen for them to start producing axes etc.?

There will be. Look in the War Academy (point the mouse at Civilization IV at the top of the page). And Workers do cost gold in maintenance - at least in Vanilla 1.74 they do.

Here's an article on unit maintenance. :)

Workers definitely cost gold in maintenance in all versions of the game, including Warlords and Beyond the Sword. ;)

Noobie question:
Mods for BTS 3. 17 or BTS do they work with Civ4 complete?
Thanks

Does civ 4 complete include BTS? If that is the case, then mods should work, otherwise it is unlikely.

I'm not sure, but I vaguely recall reading that it is connected to other civilisations having access to these upgraded units. But whether just one or the majority of civilisations needs access to these units isn't clear to me. Also, barbarians don't have access to all units.

It does include BTS, so mods should work with Civ4 Complete (as long as it's appropriately patched).

I think for a game with n civilizations, the barbarians will get access to upgraded units when n-1 civilizations have the prerequisite technology (eg Archery for Archers, Bronze Working for Axemen). That's just off the top of my head though, so it may be slightly wrong - it's definitely something to do with the number of civilizations that own the prerequisite techs though.

When can Partisans start appearing?
If you raze cities with events on, I believe there is a chance of them appearing then.

Yeah, but I don't think they start appearing until later in the game - I think a Civ must be at a certain tech level to get Partisans or something like that.

Not tech level, Civic ;) ( Emancipation ) .... and it has some quirks, due to the nationality of the partisans ( and the civic check ) being done to the civ that has the highest city culture ( not regular plot culture, to add to the confusion ) in the city tile and not to the political owner. Taken to the extremes , you can get Indian partisans from a Aztec city if the city had been from India and you are in war with both India and Aztecs. If a farm/cottage/mine is not in a white ring of any city, is it useless?

By white ring I assume you mean the Big Fat Cross (BFC), the area of tiles a city can work. Cottages that cannot be worked by a city are utterly useless as they're only function is to increase :commerce: gained from working a tile same with farms increasing :food:. This applies to all tiles if they do not bring a resource (if its a mine on copper then its very useful!).

To an extenet this also includes tiles within the cities workable area!
If your happy cap (:) cap)allows 4 population, and you've built 4 cottages 2 farms 3 mines and a fishing boat then you can only work up to 4 of those tiles till your :) cap is increased.
Due to this its best to improve only tiles your city will be working either immediately, OR in the very near future OR if your workers really have nothing better to do.
