Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thanks for the fast responses. Do any of the later to be formed religions ever become prevalent in games without player intervention? I realize my sample is small to this point but it seems that Buddhism and Hinduism will dominate every game.

Almost never. That's why I like Choose Religions from Custom Game options; many leaders have a historical favourite religion they will pick if they found one (Christianity for Isabella, Islam for Saladin etc.). Brings more flavor in the game.

this isn't so much a noobie question as it is a me being too lazy to look it up question: what technology is prefaced by spock reciting arthur c clarke "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic?"

Hey guys I'm new to the civ series (great game so far)
I need help, excuse me when they are noobish questions :)
1. Cottages. when i build one it says city needs to work te become a hamlet. So how do i get the city to work?
2. The only victories i could get so far were cultural, when i have some agressive neighbours they just declare on me when im not expecting it and rape me... How do I prevent this? In other words how to build a decent military while still focussing on economy??

3. Some tips on outteching the opponent? I know trading helps but...

Still in need of my first victory on noble, wish me luck guys!

Firstly, welcome to the forums. :wavey:
1. Cottages. when i build one it says city needs to work te become a hamlet. So how do i get the city to work?

A city 'works' an improvement when its citizens are utilising that tile. So, in the city screen, there will be several tiles with circles around them. Those are the tiles that are being 'worked', and the bonuses from each tile will contribute to the city's production, food and commerce. So, in order to grow a cottage to become a hamlet (which increases its commerce output), your citizens need to 'work' the tile with the cottage for a certain number of turns, at which point it automatically upgrades, and its yield automatically increases.

2. The only victories i could get so far were cultural, when i have some agressive neighbours they just declare on me when im not expecting it and rape me... How do I prevent this? In other words how to build a decent military while still focussing on economy??

That can be tough. The best way of doing this is to conduct sustainable warfare throughout the duration of the game, instead of simply bottling up. You need to be reasonably strong in order to be able to afford to sit on the back foot for a cultural victory. If you eliminate your opponents, or damage their power early on, then they will not pose as big a threat to you in the late game. Additionally, if you are going for a cultural victory, you can get to a certain point in the game (perhaps Rifling), where you turn off the research slider, and use the resultant gold to power the cultural slider, and pay for a powerful army, produced by those cities other than the three required for cultural victory. So, if you can do this, you shouldn't have all that much problem pumping out units from your non-culture cities in order to deter/repel any attack.

3. Some tips on outteching the opponent? I know trading helps but...

Out teching the AI can be hard. Trade certainly helps, and can be exploited to a certain extent. But having a powerful economy is very important, too. This allows for continued research. One of my personal preferences is to go for Industrialism early, build up your industry, becoming a productive powerhouse, which will in turn assist with research (either through buildings multiplying research, or through actually building research). And if that fails, there is always getting techs out of civs through war.

Hope that helped. :)

It's true that Buddhism and Hinduism typically dominate, but less so on larger maps.

If you have a huge map with lots of civs on different continents, then often each continent will have it's own dominant religion - so this gives some of the later religions a chance to gain traction.

Two words: City Specialization.

Some additional words: Find a city that is well suited to producing hammers - for example, one with a lot of hills to mine, and enough food to work those hills. Build a barracks and maybe a granary in the city. Then build units, stopping only to build a stable (if you will be building mounted units) forge, drydock, factory, and other improvements that would either boost hammer output or unit output. Only build other buildings if you absolutely have to (for health/happiness purposes, for example).

A good unit pump will produce a 'base' unit for its era every 2-3 turns or so.

Your other cities can focus on the economy. Which means either cottages (if you have lots of grassland) or specialists (if you have a lot of food).

3. Some tips on outteching the opponent? I know trading helps but...

Land is power. Get more land, build cottages on it. On noble, sheer brute force works fine. On higher levels, beelining to techs and trading them around is more of a necessity, but you should be able to do without that on noble.

Are the exp. points bonuses that great generals give for units created in a city cumulative or can a city only ever give +2 exp. ?

They're cumulative. 3 great generals and West Point and a barracks give 3*2 +4 +3 = 13 experience to every unit created in that city.

Since each promotion is more expensive than the previous one, there are diminishing returns when adding more great instructors to a single city.

Is there any way of turning of the messages that say such-and-such city wants to join whatever rival empire and rightfully so? It's rather annoying to continuously get this message.

Is there a mod for the current version of BtS that allows ICBMs to completely raze cities? I don't want a new unit or anything, just a quick little patch of XML if there is such a thing.

The "Special Edition" was an initial edition of Civ4 that one could pre-order. IIRC, it came in a tin box, with some other fancy goodies. (It's been along time since it came out. ;))

Just how beneficial is a coastal city with ample food?

I would say, quite beneficial.

Could be a GP farm. Whip the necessary improvements with all that food, or run Caste.

Build Moai there and it can produce a decent amount of hammers.

Add Globe Theatre and presumably whip/draft units there.

Does the Univ. of Sankore still provide a research benefit with monasteries after monasteries have been made obsolete?
