Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I'm receiving two hammers for my budhist temple (state religion) but I can't figure out what for...? I'm organised religion, and have got quite a few wonders. It must be pretty evident to most people where to hammers are from... i would say.

Apostolic palace gives all religious buildings of the Apostolic religion a hammer bonus if you're the resident of the Palace, I think.

You don't have to be the resident of the AP to receive that +2 :hammers: benefit. In fact, I don't think the AP religion even has to be your state religion, though I could be wrong about that.

You don't need to be the resident. All AP buildings give 2 hammers to everyone. Exceptions: if you defy a resolution you lose them until you vote yes on a vote that passes, and obsoletion (i.e. Monasteries lose the hammers at SciMeth).

I beg your pardon, Link16?

He was answering my question. Okay, the easiest thing to do with a mod if you're following a tutorial, I think, is to copy and paste it into the right XML, and then change what you need to change. Never modded in a unit, so I may be wrong.

Is it just me or is anyone one else impressed with a pre 1000 AD Liberalism by the human player? I don't see why, but I normally get it in the 12th century and somehow can't get it before then... Tips/tricks?

First off, keep in mind that some of those pre-1000 AD Liberalism achievements are on slower speeds (epic or marathon); if you're playing at standard speed, snagging Liberalism before 1000 AD is more challenging simply because you have fewer turns in which to do so. (Granted, techs are more expensive on epic/marathon, but with more turns to carve out a decent-sized empire, you can overcome the additional research requirements pretty easily.)

1) Prioritize early GP more -> Bulb more, using 3 bulbs for Philo and 2xEdu result in a fast Lib.

2) Play on a lower (Noble-)/higher (Imm+) difficulty level for cheaper techs, or more tech trades, respectively. Makes for a much easier fast Lib.

EDIT: Note that a needlessly fast Lib is a very dumb idea. If you get there first, go up the tech tree to get the best tech possible with it and only take it when it's in danger of being taken by another Civ.

Thank you Silu. Those look very helpful, however I don't want to get to liberalism just for the sake of getting there. I just feel discouraged and wanted to see if I could do it, however thank you.

im not following a guide exactly. im using it for a referance, but im making different units

link16: As your discussion doesn't really fall into the "Quick answers/Newbie questions" category for which this thread is intended, I highly recommend you create a new thread in the Creation and Customization forum, which is much better suited for this type of discussion and where you will likely get much more help from several experienced modders.

Since you're clearly a novice at this, start from scratch (with only original files) and follow the guide to the letter. Only if you can make the tutorial unit happen should you attempt a unit of your own.

I don't think anyone can help you with this - because no one knows exactly what you've done. So you need to rely on the guide instead. Good luck! :goodjob:

About combat calculations and promotions:

Say you have a unit in a city, defending. Another unit is attacking. When I have a choice in promoting the attacking unit, it always seemed obvious to me that, in this situation (= attacking a city), I should take the 20% bonus that City Raider I gives me over the generic 10% bonus that is Combat I. After all, 20% is better than 10%.

But then a few days ago, I read somewhere that this is not the case, and that in some circumstances, the Combat promotion is actually better, even when attacking a city.

So now I'm looking for
a) an explanation of why this is (I'm reading the archives looking for answers, but everything seems horribly complicated)

and perhaps more important:
b) a clear rule about when I should choose the Combat promotion over the City Raider promotion

Hi. I've just been introduced to Civ 4 and thought it was great. My question is, if I get the 'Complete' version will I still be able to play online with someone who doesn't have the expansion packs?

Thanks.

If I recall correctly, yes, but you'll be limited to vanilla play. It's been ages since I touched multiplayer though, and I'm not sure.

In any case, tell whoever is still playing vanilla to get BtS, it's a must have :)

How convenient, our resident combat math expert just made a great post that's exactly what you're looking for here :D If you're lazy you can skip over the specifics for the dumb-thumb-rules at the bottom.

Thanks, EsaKo. I think my first strategic move should be to get the full version and tell my pal to upgrade! :-)

Cheers.
